Have been working through this one. Not easy by any means. Like you Eire Dearg, 1ac would open up some more. Can't figure it out and am missing a great many letters. I have ??O?A??? ?????T?O??. I reckon its an anagram of "giant vain patriot on"

Some of the clues that I'm missing are
Across 15,19,25,28,30,36, 41,44,48,55,58,71,76,78,81,87,88,110
Down 1, 4,6,21,27,35,39,40,41,50,63, 64,66,81,
