    what you mean zerk?

3 or 4 years in college won't change someone who's always been insulting or clumsy.

Your post implied that people with college education would automatically be polite, and as I said,I've met a few who are highly educated but have the manner of a pig.

You just had a bad experience with one guy,I'm sure there's many more around that have had similar with plumbers, handymen etc. That's life-there's good guy's and not so good.

All of Skys engineers are'nt bad believe me-I am one.People only talk about the bad things on forums like this. You would be hard pushed to find any posts congratulating the engineer for a job well done would'nt you?

In 7 years as a sky engineer I've only had one complaint raised against me.When I asked a customer to put her rather vicious dog in another room while I completed a box swap she accused me of not being a dog lover and of being anti-dog and lodged a complaint with sky that blew over very quickly.

There are some really ****e policemen and women but thankfully theres a lot of good ones too so don't tar all with the same brush.

I agree with you there. I'm in Donegal and had the Sky Engineer out last week to do a HD upgrade. I don't think it was the same guy Paddyjoe had though. I had been having problems with reception in heavy rain ever since I replaced my old rusty dish last year. I assumed I didn't have it lined up properly so I asked him would he have a look at it. He did and discovered the lnb on the dish was faulty and changed it for another one. He didn't have to do that so agreed they are not all bad.

Interesting that you should believe a Sky engineer should not have to fix a faulty LNB.
I would have thought that they were responsible for ensuring they can deliver the service quality they charge for.
Maybe I am missing something here probably because I am not a Sky customer..

Its your responsibility to ensure the area the guy is going to be working in is clear of breakable stuff like vases.

On top of that there are customers who every one wants to tell to f**k right off, especialy ones who ask for directions and just get an earfull about how the customer has been waiting whenever amount of time and blah blah blah whinge whinge whinge.

Sounds to me you created this situation and havent stopped bitc hing about it.

That said he shouldn't have actually told you to f off dispite you probably deserving it.

Hoping your taking the piss, otherwise trolling..

Well he wasn't out on a service call he was only swapping the box because I upgraded. If I had to ring Sky to fix the bad reception I'm sure they wouldn't have come and done it for nothing.

I think a big part of the problem Sky has with customers is due to the fact they have a monopoly. The customer in a lot of cases has no choice other than deal with them and they know that. They may give their engineers a couple of weeks training in the technical end of things but they seem to omit training in customer relations. I'm also in the service business and am constantly hearing stories about Sky and their installers. But most customers just put it down to the guy being under pressure and under-paid.

pressure and under-paid it may be, but theres no reason to take it out on the customers!

Agreed 100% paddyjoe. I was'nt trying to excuse them. Just saying it seems to be commonplace.

Good news. Watch out with those one4all vouchers though. Once they expire, there's no comeback. And I think I heard in the news last week that they're about to introduce a monthly charge on them which I presume means that they can effectively depreciate. Recommend you either cash it in or use it as soon as you can!

Well sky themselves are calling them engineers!

Unfortunately the title of Engineer is not protected in Ireland - as such it has very little real meaning. Designations such as Chartered Engineer or European Engineer are Protected.

The term "engineer" is not protected in the UK either, and here's why:

    http://www.engc.org.uk/faq/professional-titles/why-engineer-not-protected

In general however, you will find terms like "Civil Engineer", "Chemical Engineer", "Structural Engineer", "Electrical Engineer" etc are the professional terms which are used by professional engineers.

I am pretty sure that Sky do not require their installers to have a degree in Electronic Engineering or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in signal transmission :D

    I know. :)

Unfortunately, the general public hear the term 'Engineer' and think they're dealing with a qualified professional.

There is a comeback when it expires, which takes 12 months. You can send it back to the gift voucher shop and they issue a replacement for a charge of course. Haven't heard anything about a monthly charge though and there is no mention of this on the website.
