Basically if you have been working in the EU you MAY be able to claim social welfare (to be fair most likely) if you have not been in the EU you need to satisfy the "Habitual Residence Conditions" before you can get your free money. One of these however is "A person who had previously been habitually resident in the State and who moved to live and work in another country and then resumes his/her long-term residence in the State may be regarded as being habitually resident immediately on his/her return to the State."

This only allows you Jobseeker's Allowance not Jobseeker's Benefit

Canada is preferred to Australia, but more there is a lower unemployment rate in Australia; therefore more emigrants choose there.

I am a lot more pessimistic about the Irish empires long term prospects. The problem is teh region we are in is in decline. Even if we sort out the Euros ills it still doesn't stop the lack of growth in the region and the exodus of manufacturing jobs to the east. The only place the region can compete is in services as in banking, design, high technology and branding. But these are also under threat as the talents can easily be displaced to the regions with the money. Those regions who soon will have the biggest middle class in the world is China and India. They will create their own competitive brands, they already are. They are also gaining ground in the high tech industry.

So the only countries with good long term good projections in growth are the countries with resources who are feeding the east. Europe is not rich in resources and our other wealth creation industries are moving to the East. Ireland may have oil or that is just a pipe dream, I think Europe will start to look more like the economies of South America bar Brazil in the next 20 years.

This movement of regional wealth and power has happened for centuries we are living through another one.

Ha ha - my wife is Belgian and cringes every time that ad comes on. Having said that I wouldn't have put it past myself to do that (i.e. bring a USA biscuit tin full of midlands bog with me over there) when I lived in Belgium. That's why people not living here should NEVER be allowed to vote here.

I was trying to be "Ironic",
My point is that FF will get back in power again at some stage. People forget quickly and listen to opposition bull**** all the time.

All I can say is that the government figures do not remotely correspond with my experience over the last few years. Of the god knows how many people Ive known who have arrived on WHV over the last few years I could count on my fingers and toes the amount who have permanently returned home. The figure of 1200 odd illegals throughout the whole of Australia seems absoloutely ludicrous to me.

To be honest I agree with you 1200 for the whole of Australia does not seem to be a lot, but I cant see why the Government would fudge the figures of the number of Irish illegals at the end of the day really who cares.

My experience is that over the past 7 years I have known at least 20 overstayers who swore they would never leave and at last count they all have. Going illegal is not for everyone and even the hardest of those that do soften after a few years, no matter what you think its not a long term solution. If you get caught you risk been detained in Villawood with a bunch of ass hungry HIV/Hep infected asylum seekers .

Also being sponsored is no guarantee of being able to stay in Australia, lose your job and you have 28 days to find a new sponsor or your on a flight home. A 457 visa is nothing more than a glorified WHV with even more restrictions to worry about.
