Ireland is hoping for a Celtic boomerang

More than 500 left every week in 2011, and the new year is expected to see another mass exodus, especially to Australia.

Ireland recovered from similar downturns in the 1950s and 1980s, and the hope is that once the economy recovers, the latest "emigration generation" will return.

It may take a decade, but Ireland is hoping for a Celtic boomerang.

The forum is not that representative. Very few people I know are on boards. I'm in Oz because it had the right industries for me but I still wouldn't be adverse to Canada after another year over here. People try Australia I think mainly because of the amount of Irish over there already and the amount of friends you can get to go with you compared to Canada which is less traditional.

Weather and all. Id like to see Canada and will probably end up doing at least a year there. Ive met loads in Australia, they are generally a cool bunch of people, well laid back, and the women are savage. But give me 40 weeks of summer over a place more freezing than home any day. Honestly could ever live in Ireland on a permanent basis, even if the economy was good.

The Boomerang is going ramp up over the next year when the Holiday visa's start running out, there's going be mass return and it wont take a decade.

I'd always intended on being a 'boomerang' but the more time it takes for Ireland to sort itself the more I'm settled with a career here and less likely to go back at all.

Only advice I'll give is go for the working holiday visa, and try to stay permanently after the second year visa. You really have to work to get sponsorship you want here.

Between sponsorships secured on WHV, spouse visas secured here (most commonly student spouses), student visas and people going illegal there are very very few people leaving Australia at the end of the visa, despite whatever made up figures the government releases. Well I do agree Migration from Ireland to Australia has went up from 2900 a year to 3700 and sponsorships have went up from 3500 to 5500.

But there is still 25,000 WHV per year and 80% of those will go home don't forget that the more get sponsored this year means less chance for those next year. Its a matter of mathematical saturation.

Even the Brits are begging for 457 where they would have turned their noses up at it 3 years ago, there is only so many employer willing and able to sponsor it not like RTE claim that its a infinite.

There might be some doing micky mouse student crap holding out for sponsorship that probably never materialise and I am sure there are more going mexican but is it really a viable option for most people? Its no way to live that's for sure, they wake up some day when the have had enough and go home.

I wouldn't knock the statistics though its more reliable than pub talk after 10 schooners.

What I've noticed about my mates who had short term visas/permits for Oz is that they headed off to New Zeland. Chances are once done there they'll probably hop off to somewhere else in Asia.

It is, céad míle fáilte. What the well meaning BBC don't seem to realise is the government and politicans don't want them back, even if people generally do. If you're forced to emigrate you by default probably don't have any money or contacts or got burned so they don't want you voting for someone else.

They want the comfortable and well off to stick around since they've done well enough to probably vote the usual suspects and their cousins back in, those well adjusted to a climate of graft and nepotism.

Basically if you have been working in the EU you MAY be able to claim social welfare (to be fair most likely) if you have not been in the EU you need to satisfy the "Habitual Residence Conditions" before you can get your free money. One of these however is "A person who had previously been habitually resident in the State and who moved to live and work in another country and then resumes his/her long-term residence in the State may be regarded as being habitually resident immediately on his/her return to the State."

This only allows you Jobseeker's Allowance not Jobseeker's Benefit

Canada is preferred to Australia, but more there is a lower unemployment rate in Australia; therefore more emigrants choose there.

I am a lot more pessimistic about the Irish empires long term prospects. The problem is teh region we are in is in decline. Even if we sort out the Euros ills it still doesn't stop the lack of growth in the region and the exodus of manufacturing jobs to the east. The only place the region can compete is in services as in banking, design, high technology and branding. But these are also under threat as the talents can easily be displaced to the regions with the money. Those regions who soon will have the biggest middle class in the world is China and India. They will create their own competitive brands, they already are. They are also gaining ground in the high tech industry.

So the only countries with good long term good projections in growth are the countries with resources who are feeding the east. Europe is not rich in resources and our other wealth creation industries are moving to the East. Ireland may have oil or that is just a pipe dream, I think Europe will start to look more like the economies of South America bar Brazil in the next 20 years.

This movement of regional wealth and power has happened for centuries we are living through another one.

Ha ha - my wife is Belgian and cringes every time that ad comes on. Having said that I wouldn't have put it past myself to do that (i.e. bring a USA biscuit tin full of midlands bog with me over there) when I lived in Belgium. That's why people not living here should NEVER be allowed to vote here.

Don't worry if you don't get a job right away, there's plenty here generally speaking.

Try get sponsorship from day one, the sooner you have it the sooner you can stop worrying about having to leave at some stage.

Or, as wise Youssef Islam once said, find a girl, settle down etc etc.

All I can say is that the government figures do not remotely correspond with my experience over the last few years. Of the god knows how many people Ive known who have arrived on WHV over the last few years I could count on my fingers and toes the amount who have permanently returned home. The figure of 1200 odd illegals throughout the whole of Australia seems absoloutely ludicrous to me.

Strange thing is mind, near on the only people Ive met here who have a take it or leave it attitude to staying here forever are people who have a sponsorship. Every poor fcuker illegal, on WHV or on student never wants to leave!

To be honest I agree with you 1200 for the whole of Australia does not seem to be a lot, but I cant see why the Government would fudge the figures of the number of Irish illegals at the end of the day really who cares.

My experience is that over the past 7 years I have known at least 20 overstayers who swore they would never leave and at last count they all have. Going illegal is not for everyone and even the hardest of those that do soften after a few years, no matter what you think its not a long term solution. If you get caught you risk been detained in Villawood with a bunch of ass hungry HIV/Hep infected asylum seekers .

Also being sponsored is no guarantee of being able to stay in Australia, lose your job and you have 28 days to find a new sponsor or your on a flight home. A 457 visa is nothing more than a glorified WHV with even more restrictions to worry about.
