Foreigners who come here and don't learn English

I need to rant a little about this.

I live with 3 Spanish people, and about 2 of them don't bother to learn English. They live here and wander along to other houses full of other Spanish people who, similarly, don't learn the language. At night, these same people will spend hours on Skype/MSN chatting with family and friends in Spain.

In other words, WHY ARE THEY HERE!!!!

I can't accuse everyone of this, because I've met some people who have made great efforts and reached a very high level, and bother to get work.

It's p****ing me off at this stage to be honest.

[I'm not against Spanish people, but just the mentality of coming here and not learning]

They're not looking for work though. They hate speaking English and speak as little as possible.

Same issue was raised years ago in australia.
Chinese would arrive and make no attempt to learn/speak English and go straight to Chinatown to work and live.
Aussie government were concerned that it encouraged ghettoes and that some of the less intelligent could be exploited by rogue employers.

    I agree.

No one should travel anywhere unless they are fluent in the language(s) of the country/region they are travelling to.

Those who do not comply should be incinerated

So what exactly are they doing? Just sitting in the house during the day?

I know those lads. They can speak perfect English, they just pretend they can't so they don't have to converse with you.

    Soz. LOL. etc.

Not at all, even if they were fluent, I probably wouldn't like them.
The other chap is sound, so no, I don't cry at night over this. :(

Mostly sitting around with the laptop watching Spanish videos/movies etc. Then cooking while listening to Spanish music, and then maybe visit their Spanish friends, and finally come home spending the night on MSN/Skype.
Occasionally going to Centra where they don't need to speak any English at all.

They came to Ireland, perhaps they are learning Irish and speaking to each other in Irish and you can't understand them

Move out. Let them do what they want. I don't see many irish travellers living in vietnam or similar places for 6 months + learning the language.

Yes - Irish, Spanish, Portuguese, and German

I agree with OP. If you come to live in a foreign country you should make an effort to integrate and contribute to society.

I'm so sorry. He's from Barcelona.

If they can get by without learning english then why should they? I dont understand why people find it offensive that some foreign people dont want to learn english. Does it really matter to you :(

This kinda bothers me too, i dont lose any sleep over it now but I think if you're gonna move to a country then you should at least try and get some sort of grasp on the language spoken in that country. It does raise the question that if theyre not working, not studying and all they do is socialise with other Spaniards then why are they here? And are they just well off people or are they on social welfare?

If I was moving to a country that english wasnt the main language then I would defo try learn the language.

And in response to the comment above about Irish... I am fluent in Irish myself and I love the language but I dont see how that question is valid here as it's not the primary language here nor is it a necessity to communicate in this country, its heritage.

You should start with the basics e.g try "fuck off", and see how that grabs them.
