Seriously though, why are we not starting Bellers in every single game now?! 3 goals and 3 assists in his last 6 starts for us (all comps). In only 1 of those starts did he fail to contribute either a goal or an assist.

Slightly OT but it looks like we may have dodged a bit of a bullet by giving Dalglish the full time job rather than Villa Boas (assuming AVB would have taken it). He seems to be developing into thier version of Hodgson; surreal press conferences, divided dressing room, below par results and unfathomable tactics. I think our players may have been more suited to his style of play than Chelsea's - our defenders are quicker so better able to play a high line for example - but he seems a bit bewildered by the press scrutiny at the top of the EPL and I think it all may have come a little bit early for him.

Anyhoo there was a bit of waffle in one of teh English papers this morning saying that LFC could do worse than look for Thiery Henry on a short term loan during the US soccer close season. Argument was he is a natural finisher who would fix our short term problems without threatening the long term development of Carrol. He's a great positive influence to have around and could be useful on the training pitch and has a long term affection for Liverpool, he's certainly talked up the Anfield atmosphere a few times. A real gent as well. Doubt it would happen but would be a very astute signing if it did - like Larson for Utd a few years back.

was thinking that myself recently but i doubt he will play for another EPL club, in fact, i reckon Arsenal may well try and get him in, they are not exactly plush with strikers and he would sell shirts by the truckload for them

He's already training with Arsenal as it is, so i'd say there's a good chance if he looks sharp that they'll bring him in officially on loan.

Just looking at Tusky's list. 5 or 6 lads on that list ahead of Suarez that are complete unknowns.

I would love to see Suarez playing off a real striker like Torres (old version). This whole Carroll thing is like a bad dream. It's like being massively in negative. He's like some sort of nama gamble. What in the name of god were those bloody fools thinking when they paid 35m? He's a complete dud. Comolli should hang for this. He's LFC's very only Sean FitzPatrick. Just look at Spurs, the minute Calamity-Comolli walks out the door, Spurs are riding high at the top of the league, signing quality players at bargain prices like Parker, Adebayor etc.

    Pos. Player Goals Team
1 Robin van Persie 15 Arsenal
2 Wayne Rooney 11 Manchester United
2 Sergio Agüero 11 Manchester City
2 Demba Ba 11 Newcastle United
5 Edin Dzeko 10 Manchester City
6 Yakubu Aiyegbeni 9 Blackburn Rovers
7 Emmanuel Adebayor 8 Tottenham Hotspur
7 Mario Balotelli 8 Manchester City
    9 Daniel Sturridge 7 Chelsea
9 Ivan Klasnic 7 Bolton Wanderers
    9 Frank Lampard 7 Chelsea
12 Rafael van der Vaart 6 Tottenham Hotspur
12 Jermain Defoe 6 Tottenham Hotspur
12 Heidar Helguson 6 Queens Park Rangers
12 Grant Holt 6 Norwich City
12 Steven Fletcher 6 Wolverhampton Wanderers
12 Javier Hernández 6 Manchester United
12 Steve Morison 6 Norwich City
    19 Luis Suarez 5 Liverpool

We badly need a clinical goal scoring centre forward.

Andy Carroll was bought to be our clinical scoring centre forward.

    He is not doing it.

I'm not saying he that is the only reason for our failings, but he is probably the main one to be honest. If he was banging them in it would solve the majority of our problems.

Jesus, no more obvious way to show where we've fallen short this year than looking at that table. I almost wonder if we should have hung on to Ngog?!

Swansea, Norwich, Fulham would all most definitely have been 3 points with a clinical striker.

Also likely that City, United, Sunderland and Stoke games could have been won.

I think we'd be looking at about 10 points more if we had had a top striker.

To be fair to Ngog he probably would have scored a few of the chances we've failed to put away this season. Frightening that we've scored fewer than Bolton and Blackburn this season.

I wonder if there will be an increase in speculation linking Friend Of Liverpool Team Talk/Gossip/Rumours Thread 11/12 Edinson Cavani with a move away in the summer. Napoli are already well behind Udinese, Juve and Milan with the same number of games played and this year only the top 2 get into the Champions League and 3rd have to qualify.I can see a few of their names trying to jump ship if they don't make it (and i don't think they'll even finish third). He is contracted till 2016 but i'd be surprised if someone doesn't make a serious move. Looks like he is "only" on about 50k a week judging by online reports (so who knows). Not sure he would be suited to the Premier League myself, but if Napoli don't make next seasons Champions League someone will come knocking. 35-42 mil would be my guess considering his contract.

There was talk of this on the United thread recently, the shirt sponsors (Adidas, Nike, whoever) pay the club a set amount of money for producing the shirts, and beyond this number there is very little extra money that goes to the club on the basis of shirt sales. This is as far as I know, or is there anyone here with proper evidence that this isnt how it works?

EDIT: Cant find the post/s where this was mentioned, everything seems to point towards shirt sales having a bearing on how much the club get.

I'd imagine if Cavani was to command a fee of 40 mill then he'd expect wages of near 200k a week to go along with the fee?

I'd imagine someone else would beat us to his signing even if the owners agreed to stump up the cash. If he were to leave I think he would go to another top Italian club. He could well stay though, he's a hero in Naples from what I've seen.

Cavani not a realistic option for many reasons I don't think. I'd love to be wrong

"We were in the bottom half of the table at the start of the week and it's deadline day; our talismanic world-class striker just handed in a transfer request and we haven't signed Suarez yet. Let's tell Chelsea we'll only sell Torres if we get that 21-year-old full international who's got 11 goals in 19 appearances this season and who's probably the best attainable striker close enough to have a medical. I wonder how much Chelsea are willing to pay?"

IF we qualify for the Champions League he would be realistic. We got Torres once, one way or another. Cavani might play for 100k a week, not necessarily 200k (thats if he is indeed on 50k at Napoli). He might like the idea of playing with fellow countryman Suarez. Man City would blow us away if they did persue him, but they have huge striking talent already. Chelsea might be keen on him. Milan might get Tevez ruling them out as they have Ibra, and Cavani would not get near Barca, unlikely that Madrid would go for him either. Inter could probably not afford him. Juve or PSG maybe??. I honestly cannot see him going from Napoli to Juve mind you!

The panic around here is incredible. WTF?

We are only 15 games into a 38 game season, and have already played all the big boys.

Besides, we probably are a 6th place team right now, and anything over that will be punching above our weight.

Comparisons with Chelsea are pointless. While they have a new manager, they are also a club with a squad where a 50m striker can be benched.

Spurs are a well run club, finally built in Harry's mould with a squad most would envy.

Arsenal have longevity in the manager's chair, and a clear understanding of how they need to play for him.

Liverpool have a manager in the chair for 11 months, we lost some good players in the Summer, have yet to bed in their replacements, we have lost our talisman (maybe for good?), and just lost our best player for the rest of the season.

Even at that we are 5 points off 3rd with a hell of a long way to go.

I really hate game by game reactions, it is such a waste of energy, particularly given the margins are so tight, and fixtures week on week cannot be compared across teams.

Wait until we have 30 games under our belt and see where we are then for crying out loud.

Liverpool will not be signing anyone for 40 million next summer, some sights needs lowering.

As for the rest - Calm Down!

I agree with everything you said... apart from talisman, I die inside a little everytime I read that in relation to football. :p

Sorry, while I thought the rest of your post was fair, this sentance amused me.

You realise that you play all the big boys twice right, and half a season is 19 games?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,968 ✭✭✭✭mike65

And we'll get at least as many points off Arsenal, City, Utd, Chelsea (and hopefully a point off Spurs) in the return games :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,516 ✭✭✭Daemonic

Unfortunately it isn't the points gained against the big boys that's defining our season so far.

Its not that we are playing necessarily bad football we just need to convert our chances.

The point I made a while back about the goal keeping coach still stands, his name is Xavi Valero - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xavi_Valero - and it was Torres who said the Valero made the difference in him scoring so many goals.

    Yes.

Not that I'd ever wish injury on a player especially ours but its obvious how other players have grown without having to really on STEVIEG.

Maybe if Suarez picks up a knock that we'll see Carroll flourish in his absence

    15 games < 19 games

So we've half our toughest fixtures out of the way, with a fair chunk less than half the season gone.

It's not the big boys I'm concerned about.

    Chelsea away won
    Arsenal away won
    United home drew
    City home drew

    8 from 12 points there.

It's the smaller teams that we need to gather more points off.

The loss to Spurs was obviously a disaster but a win away to Everton was a big result.

Draws into wins especially at home(against lesser teams) is where we must improve in the 2nd half of the season if we want to be serious challengers for top 4.

Remember, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea all have to come to Anfield - all potential and likely challengers for top 4.

A full international for England. Not a chance of a player of his low calibre being next nor near to the Spanish or German squads, nevermind French or Italian. England have been crap for years. Carroll isn't much better than a Bendtner.
