Guards have to act occasionally on the slightest and remotest suspicions i'm sure they don't get so bored that they are interested in casual small talk. It's not a job to get bored with.Everyone complains when there is no garda presence in times of trouble. So support them with courtesy anyway.

So what happens if I say 'sorry but what seems to be the problem'?

    Can they lie?

That's not relevant for Ireland though.

It's amazing from the replies so far that some people are prepared to accept such intrusion. I think it is completely unacceptable personally.

Just tell the guard that you're going round to his house to piss through his letter-box and smash all his windows.

    Why exactly?

The amount of people that rationalise a garda's behaviour on here is sickening

Gardai are like regular people. Some good. Some bad. You cant rationalise the latter tho. Theres a good percentage of Gardai who are just dicks. Now, the job can turn many a person that way. That I understand. But others just get a power stroke and be dicks without reason.

But on here, we seem to rationalise all as one. That being "they're all good"

Okay... is a cop on the beat allowed to lie to a civilian or is he required to be truthful by nature of his work?

What do you mean by lying? he/she is not obliged to tell you about his job or what it is he is doing.
If you ask him his name he is obliged to give it to you.

Okay then, they just want to provoke someone so they can beat the lard out of them.

1st, dont know how you automatically come to that judgement
2nd, ever hear of being a dick because you can?
3rd, ever hear of power trip?

you honestly saying that you've never, ever had a person in your life who was in 'power' be rude, a dick (etc) to you? be it a manager, supervisor, bouncer etc? .. you saying that such a thing does not exist?

I would imagine every cop will have a different reply but along the lines of ''there is no problem sir just routine question''. That would probably cause annoyance and more questions.

Have you ever been stopped at a check point?

...........where you are going? If there is one thing that really irks me it's when they stop you in your car and ask "where are you going". Then you tell them and they ask you "where are you coming from".

If I'm behaving suspiciously I can understand it, but when you're out for a Sunday afternoon drive or such it seems intrusive to put it mildly.

They can ask the question but you don't have to tell them the truth. It's not as if they will know you are lying.
Do they ask this question during the day?
If they smell bull they will dig deeper. This obviously won't effect someone with all their credentials in order, and presumably without drink on board. I'd imagine it's more commonly asked of motorists late at night, so smart arsed 'I'm on the way to mass' will cost you more time with them, or more if your window badges aren't in order.

Just answer the Garda honestly, and you'll be on your way. Hesitation invites suspicion.

It's not an intrusion. It's an informal and non-threatening way of assessing your behaviour and reaction to questioning without literally going "Are you drunk?" "Are you stoned?" "Did you rob that house back there?". The guard also somehow manages to check your windscreen, ensure that there isn't a kidnap victim in the boot, and that you're not trying to hid a bloody knife in the glove compartment. That's the purpose of a checkpoint.

Of all the things I don't want to tell a Garda, (including why there's a carpark ticket "accidentally" obscuring my tax disc), where I'm going and where I've come from isn't one of them.

If everything is in order you will have no need to be nervous and they will just wave you on.
The questions are routine to see if there is drink on board. A little chat with a man in uniform is great.:pac:

So if I reply 'if there's no problem can I just go then'? I mean either there's a problem or there isn't.
Have you ever been stopped at a check point?

    Yeah loads of times.

What would I say if asked 'where are you heading to Sir' by a police?

I'd reply. 'Just out for a drive' as unless they have a reason I think it's none of their business tbh.

While I agree with you it's easier to reply with just heading to the shop or going home what ever, no point in pissing them of.
It's not all fun and games and they are just doing their job.

Because instead of having the equivalent of the fifth amendment in Ireland we have this.

Yes, we have the equivalent (Act 38.1) as long as you are not being charged with terrorist offences or treason. And, I'm sure America has a similar provision in the PATRIOT ACT?
