Dublin based band (with record/management/etc) seeks Bassist

Dublin band, with very professional London-based management, a few weeks from proper publishing deal, major label interest, etc., seeks bassist, between 24-early30s

Can't be completely broke (within reason like), must be able to willing to be on stage and stuff the day job if this takes off.. all material written (more being written all the time though), album 99% finished... this could be a VERY good opportunity for the right person.

We don't gig a lot at the moment. This WILL change in 2012, and this could become a VERY demanding role, time-wise.

    No time wasters.

I AM going to ask a bunch of questions before I share music. That's just how it is.

Style of music is pop/indie/rock - mainstream, but fun to play and musical.

Our singer is one of the best going...

    email me: bassistwanteddublin@gmail.com

    Any questions, ask.

Reality check: The labels (we're talking majors here folks), management, etc., are gonna demand that you look like a bit like a musician... sorry about that, but there you go. To that end you will be vaguely judged on looks. Don't shoot the messenger.

Right - so is it about the music, or is this X-Factor?

I'd be kind of curious myself as to what a musician should look like since most musicians I know are far scruffier than the sparkly displays shown on tv.

Going on his big talk, I really don't wanna hear any of this music.

This will be the one and only warning. Please don't snipe at the thread starter. If that's all a post does then I will be issuing infractions.

You're fooling yourself if you think it's only xfactor that cares about how bands are packaged. Any business with a lick of sense will carefully package a product (music INDUSTRY remember) before it goes to market. This isn't cynical, it's being competitive. Most musicians have no chance is hell, and one of the main reasons is they think they can look down their nose at the business side of things... guess what, you can't be in the business and decry it, at least 99% of people can't initially.

As for samples, I, like a large percentage of people on Boards, don't post them publicly. Deal with it.

    To be very clear...

I think scruffy is much closer to what is being advertised for than xfactor glitz.

You know, when you see someone on the street and say, "I bet that person is a musician"... that's the kinda minimum level we're talking about here.

But c'mon... you see a lot of people on here who say, "I'm ready to be in a massive band" then they show up and are hugely obese (for example) and just wouldn't be marketable, in almost any band.

Record labels, at least big ones, are essentially banks. If you want them to lend you money (i.e. sign you to a contract of any description) they have to believe they'll get a return on their investment.

    It's a loan-vestment.

    ;)

So... If I walk into a meeting with Warner, and I have a bunch of fat slobs in their 60s, none of which can play music, and then get all angry when they don't give me a contract, much less a GOOD contract, I'm delusional.

This is also an attempt to control the situation. At this point, we don't need a bassist to do business, but if we find one that we like and can make us better we avoid having a bassist forced on us by the label.. And all that that implies.

I gotta say that im in agreement with boneitis.
Image is one of the biggest factors when it comes to getting signed up. The guys have to be at least someway cool and cant be walking into a meeting looking like a scumbag, they want the near finished artical before the record company take them on board and let their people style and mould the band.

Anyway.i guess i will throw my name into the hat. PM on the way

Fair play to bonitis, its nice to see people take a realistic approach to whats needed to succeed in this game. Im not a bassist and Im probably veering more towards the electro side of things then rock these days but I would be curious to hear some recordings if you want to pm me (if not no worries). Always nice to be aware of whats happening in the irish scene and who to look out.

I know exactly what you mean, and I have to agree with everything you have posted in this thread.
You want somebody with the "indie" look; cons, jeans, t-shirt/check shirt, maybe a stylish jacket, around 3 weeks of a beard and hair around an inch or two longer than average, who plays a fender bass :)

the coronas are a perfect example!
    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRG3_qk3SZ98-wf_WBLp1aIhBbF8ylLVLiAXKsg4vmAd4-yNblfi5t2ZJc5

just realised, I almost described what Im currently wearing! :D

hahaha... you're not a bassist are you? ;)

That's exactly right... we just have to be realistic... :)

To everyone else, thanks for all the replies and for the most part positive responses.

We'd much rather be honest and avoid wasting people's time.

I thought it was worth mentioning, boneitis sent me on a link to one of their recordings. Its clear from the recording this is very much a professional band with a lot of potential. Its a great track, very catchy and well recorded. Best of luck with the search!!

Well done on the record label and all that but I think for that kinda music image isn't something take Kurt cobain even playin MTV unplugged he looked like he just ame off the street then there's system of a down 4 beard wearing Armenians singing about genocide? Never gonna happen 25 million albums later their one of the biggest out there. Ur at a point in ur career where things can take off and my advice is to read the book called everything you need to know about the music business by Donald passman. It'll cost u €20 but could save u millions it shows how managers and record companies can rip u off and how to have a good relationship with these people and still make lots if money and also other things such as copyright. It's the book that made nirvana their money

Im sure you mean well but its quite naive to think the music industry is still operating on the same business model it was 20 years ago. Im sure the ideals are sound, and its probably a very interesting read but anyone looking for any kind of insight into the way the industry works these days would be as well off pissing into the wind as reading a book based on the financial workings of the industry 20 years ago. Quite simply, different rules apply these days.

I see ur point but it's been updated to keep up with everything including how buying records online through iTunes and such compares to others its my fault fir not making it clearer the book I have was revised and updated in 2011 and has been in 1991, 94, 95, 98 2000 03 04 07 08 09 2010 and then 2011

In that case Id be interested in having a read of that myself. I still maintain any band looking to succeed on a major label has to be at least somewhat image aware. Maybe not for some of the independant labels but for any of the majors its crazy to think it wouldnt at least be a factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭tommyalph

The book itself is excellent I understand so much more now as regards image my opinion is make ur own and go with people look at something that stands so stand out! No matter what music u listen to who doesn't recognise slipknot?

There's many roads to success, but a LOT more roads to failure. If you wanna convince people you're serious you can't just say you're serious you have to actually BE serious. In the case of the entertainment industry (let's not fool ourselves) you have to, at a bare minimum, look like someone that fits into SOME slot.

It's nice to think we can all be Kurt Cobain, but we can't. Kurt Cobain couldn't even deal with it.

It's much more important to be honest, have a good team, have a decent plan, and most importantly have really strong material and a distinctive vocalist. We've got it all, minus the bassist. ;)

I dont understand the SOAD comment. Looks wise, you would think they were in a hard rock/metal band singing about genocide!

tommyalph: Please lay off the txt spk. If you can spell out "companies" and "relationship" then I don't think you need to shorten "you" and "your".
