Unfortunately rape was/is often a way to get married there.

Now, if she marries her attacker she has a chance to restore her honour and to give her child a family.

Rape victims sometimes agree to wed their attackers because they do not want to disgrace their families.
But the custom has been strongly criticised by religious leaders and women's activists.

In many Middle Eastern countries, a woman who loses her virginity out of wedlock brings shame to her family, even if she has been raped.
By marrying her attacker, the woman at least gets a certificate of marriage although it is often followed by divorce.

In Ireland, the Catholic Church reigned over years of terror & sexual abuse of children & then covered it up.

Then they got the government to protect them by limiting the amount of compensation they had to pay to it's abuse victims. And these days, they are still allowed to run the majority of schools in the country.

Now, while what happens in other parts of the world might be "fucking backwards & retarded", people who live in glass houses really shouldn't throw stones.

Nah Star, I don't think that means we don't have the right, as compassionate individuals - never mind our nationality, to be highly critical of such atrocities. We're not responsible anyway for what happened here, and church-run schools aren't exactly on the same level of this craziness.
I agree though that they're not all backward, nor is Islam all like this - comments like that are completely pointless.

Under Egyptian law, a rapist may be executed. On Sunday a 27-year-old man was sentenced to death for kidnapping and raping a three-year-old girl.

I think it was the "****ing backwards & retarded" quote of the previous poster that was the ire of Star's post as much as any comparison to church run schools but one can only imagine a world in were Islam rules which would be bleak , oppressive , dark and and miserable .

Seems like a win win for everyone but the woman. But sure they don't matter in these countries. Wonder what would happen if it were a tourist non Muslim woman raped who happened to be married. Who she have to convert, divorce her husband and marry her rapist?
