Lots of shops in the North still offer £1 for €1, not to mention that if your planning on buying big ticket items its well worth doing a bulk shop in the north.

I know many families who already pop up there once a month to do a bulk shop, its not just the VAT but they find everything cheaper even on Southern Irish produce.

When the VAT Increase comes into force here it will do more than just add a few pence to Items, business costs will increase adding to either more closures and unemployment or extra costs to prices.

    Defiantly heading North

Nothing to do with the VAT hike coming. Already cheaper, Santa list done, in Derry, why spend in the same stores in the south only to be ripped off?

Stock up on booze for Christmas in a week or two.

Living in the south of the country so wont be going up although with the price of petrol wouldn't the trip even be costly from Dublin unless you were willing to do some serious bulk shopping to offset travel costs?

Im going for the beer, not toys.

    Righto.

I'm gonna head up too then, buy a 6 pack. Spend more on gas and stick it to the paddy!

I'm probably going to get kneecapped annihilated for this but there's just something about the going 'up North' mentality that I really dislike

Good way to improve the Republic's economy. Keep it up.

Although prices for most groceries, booze and petrol is about the same in both NI and ROI recently, this VAT change just might tip the balance assuming the exchange rate is still .85p+. Still the north is still cheaper even after exchange rates for 'luxury' goods like that plasma tv so I suspect there will be a steady flow of shoppers up north but not a stampede just yet. But then again if all retailers slap their own rise on top of the VAT rise, consumers will react pretty fast with their feet(aka cars)!

i am keeping it local all the way, my turkey is being bought from a neighbour, my veg is from local veg shop, the veg is grown three miles from where i live, eggs are from poultry farm about six miles away and my groceries are being bought at the local supermarket i have been using with years, the staff and owners are local, so i beleive in supporting our economy, alcohol, we are moderate drinkers, a bottle whiskey, vodka and brandy is all i need, along with about dozen cans of beer, and guinness i drink and only guinness about a dozen cans also,
why go north, when it is eight hours driving each way, then there are the tailbacks and the tiredness of it all, there are plenty bargains to be found here,

    Which works out as €2 /litre, in sainsburys' it's 40 x 440ml bottles for £20, which works out as about €1.33 /litre a saving of about 33%

    Fill your boots!!

Edit: someone told me that the alcohol content is lower so maybe not so good

I have the internet for buying cheap goods. Alcohol is cheap enough here atm and I feel it would be a waste of a journey from the south coast just to buy some food. Wales would probably be handier

I do wonder how many people going north buy far more than what they need.

I don't quite get the whole going up there for drink anymore! 3 years ago maybe but now? I will take the petrol savings and 6 cases of hino bottles from superquinn for 15 euro each everytime. I am also seeing lots of good deals on spirits too lately.

Waste of petrol and time going north unless your planning on spending a couple of hundred.

Enniskillen 40 min drive from me. Used to shop in asda every week. Now I only head up at christmas time.

    Litre smirnoff £16
    70cl baileys £7
    Beers 15 cans £7
Litres bacardi and whiskey around the £16 mark too.

I'll also stock up on all non perishable stuff too. It is so much cheaper but only if you're not travelling up every week.

All I need is my Festivus Pole and I'm sorted

Im going for the beer, not toys.

The ironic thing is "beer" is actually cheaper here than it is up north when you factor in smaller bottles and lower alcohol content, you might save a euro or two on spirits.I am up in Enniskillen often and unless you live close enough to the border it really is not worth your while.

So the Irish government plan to increase the VAT rate next January by 2% and the solution to this problem is to travel to the North where the VAT rate was increased this January by 2.5%?

    Hmm.

what about shopping online from abroad, where vat is lower ?

Its a pity the government does not want to save retailers jobs here. I know towns where half the shops are closed already.
