With the Government introducing the VAT rise at 12am the day after the budget it would appear it will be a grim Christmas for some with the Extra Vat being added onto Toys and Christmas Presents.

Unless of course you do as many Thousands will do and head North!

Any of you guys planning on heading North to do a Christmas shop?

    Im going for the beer!

It'll be the Jan 1st when it goes up, when we're into a new VAT period.

Any VAT change will likely come in Jan 1st. Only duty changes on the night of the budget so the petrol to get you North will be more costly ;)

Beer seems to be cheap enough in Irish supermarkets don't see any saving going to the North at present

It ws confirmed by the German overlords that it will be the day after the budget.

When Lenny RIP increased the failed VAT rise 2 years ago it was done the day after the budget.

Anyone got a link for where they confirmed it would go up the day after the budget?

Might not be free but after the Carbon Tax increase in the budget it will be cheaper in the North!

You don't need to go north for that, there are Orange lodges in the Republic too.

A slab of Harp for my Da.
they sell Harp in my local Dunnes, so why go north?

A really loud exhast and a giant spoiler for my brother for his Nissan Micra.
I just don't get this one at all WTF have spoilers and exhausts got to do with the North?

and a fasionable dark glasses and beret combo for my sister.
    Give me strength.

First Time using this phrase in five years, but 'stupid post is stupid'

I'm spending my money in Ireland. Don't see the point in shopping up north.

You know what I realised today? I've never been further north than Raheny. I'm a disgrace!

Gonna get a lift up North with Sean Quinn........................

Sadly, I think if VAT goes up, I maybe out of business within 6 months...... it all seems counter productive - make stuff cost more, people will buy less. (Thread possibility here!)

Ehhhh, does he not live up north, so the courts in Belfast are led to believe?

It's good news for smugglers. As for the petrol costs, Sean Gallagher and M. McGuinness know the right people to talk to.

I do all my shopping up the North. Go up once a month only buy fruit and veg in Dublin. Meat in particular is way cheaper for some reason. Even with the exchange rate, diesel and tolls we still save 200-250 euro a month. It's a no brainer tbh.

I'll not be making a special trip or anything. But I'll be holding off on purchases til a visit to the bro in Lisburn. Prices are noticeably lower there in the same stores.
