I think it's fair to say the Arts Block in general is a disgrace. The theatres have little to no ventilation. I'm still to see one toilet with a. A Lock, b. A toilet seat and c. Toilet paper. The reading room is a social hub during exams also with no ventilation.

    Always remember to bring towels!

The front door of Callen Hall is crying out for a drop of oil. It squeaks very loud on a windy day!

I know I am straying off the topic here but what's the deal with that white canopy thing outside the new phoenix restaurant?
Is it supposed to be a shelter of some sort? Because all of the ground was getting wet underneath it today. So, I guess that's out.

It's a bandstand, as far as I know!

I think it's one of those things that has no practical purpose whatsoever, other than to keep some idiot designer busy and out of other people's way for a while.

That bleedin fan in the arts block reading room! It's insanely loud, and so distracting!

Around exam time, that fan is useful to block out the whispering and chatting some people feel they must do.

I don't think it's been already said, but walking around the phoenix there is an ungodly stench; the drains around the side of it are giving off this smell and no one has even looked into it yet. Has anyone else noticed this?

It appears to be periodic, like the Leixlip village bridge stink.

The lock on a lecturer's door in the Arts Block has been broken for years.
But he likes it that way cos students can drop in for casual chats.

To follow up on this topic. I emailed about a maintenance issue about 3 weeks ago and it has been fixed. So yeah, if you email them about something they will fix it.

If you ask about it, you'll probably told that it's left that way for "security reasons"

Like others, I am sorry to stray off the topic, however, whatever happened to the consolidation of the Printing cards that would be applicable to all printers (union, library, arts block) this year? Was this a false promise by our beloved SU Leader?

I would like to know the answer to this as well... Especially considering the "broken promises" video the SU posted on Facebook earlier.

    Would be terribly hypocritical.

I'll speak to this, I presented the progress on it at the first Union Council this year.

Short answer: it's nearly ready, will happen in February. Students who don't currently have the 1K MiFare card (technical name for the card, will be called the 'Campus Card' most likely') will be able to go to student records office in February (start of March at the latest, in case of unexpected artifacts) and get their new student card for free.

You'll be able to top it up definitely from coin / note machines around campus and online banking, and hopefully from local atms (the same way you do with phone credit) - atms require the co-operation of the banks, which is slightly more tricky, what with there being a few different banks.

You'll be able to use it for printing anywhere on campus, but also anywhere on campus where you can exchange cash i.e. Londis, Chill, etc.

Long answer: long answer which outlines the whole process is extremely long. Best explained in detail in person, so drop up to me this week if you see me at one of the march stalls. If not there I'll be in my office. But there'll be a full report when it's fully implemented.

Any further Qs on it, you can get me at president@nuimsu.com - I'm not comfortable discussing projects that involve other staff on the internets. Or you can drop in in person, I'll be in Arts Block or JH for a lot of the week promoting the stop fees campaign.

    So free money you say?

what has the university no system in place to deal with maintanance issues or do they depend on students to 'tell' them about it?

I imagine the University depends on everyone to report broken things or other issues such as the taps in the Common Room. Email issues to Maintenance@nuim.ie

Silly of us to expect Maintenance to maintain stuff. It's not as if their name implies anyth... hmm.

Maybe it should be renamed to willfixbutonlyifnotified@nuim.ie?

Why not email them and ask why? They'll probably tell you that no, they don't have enough money to employ someone to inspect every single mechanism/structure in the University 24/7.

There's a fridge in the arts block opposite the reading room, i presume in belongs to bewleys.. But every now and then it starts making a mad loud sound like a lawnmower! Noise pollution at it's worst!

Its a fridge, it runs a motor from time to time to drive the mechanism to keep it cool, hence the noise.

it can't be much worse then the parade of noise at the start of every hour.

why dont you email them or tell them? you seem to be so concerned in defending them maybe you know those responsible on a first name basis?

Now now its not like anyone in close proximity to the college could get their hands on a writer for less than 50 euro http://www.sonmicro.com/en/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=70
