i thought i'd start this thread to make it aware to the people who are suppose to be in charge of the university that some students are pi.ssed off with the incompetence of the maintanance of certain areas of the university.
this morning i used the male toilets in the arts block. the hand dryer in there has been broken since may and has yet to be fixed. this is an effing disgrace since the management here had the whole summer to fix it but never bothered. after using the toilet i went to get a drink from the water fountain in the arts block, afterall commuting is thirsty business but low and behold the water fountain is broken and has sck over it since again may. now i have to go to the atm, get money out and buy a bottle of water.
honestly like, why am i paying over 4 grand a year to be here? wheres the money going?

feel free to ad anything which college maintanance has failed to fix

I'm so sorry. I didn't realise that you were completely <snip>, and didn't read the http://campusservices.nuim.ie/helpdesk.shtml link...

I have noticed that too. It really is disgraceful.

They can afford to install fancy new seats in the arts block but are unable to provide basic 'needs' like a hand dryer in the toilet and drinking water.

In fairness, it ain't that bad. Although if we're on the subject, showers in the gym can sometimes be very cold or the other extreme..

Ill take the fancy new seats over a single hand dryer and water fountain (why should they provide free water?!)

Because it's nice to I suppose, and bottled water is an awful money making racket.

Briefly on the situation in the Arts Block. Has anyone else noticed the phenomenal disparity in the number of hand basins and the number of hand dryers? 13 vs 2 I think...

I haven't noticed anything broken, but there hasn't been any soap in the dispenser in Auxilia for the past 2 weeks.

    What a world.

I enjoy having dry hands too!

Things always break in the gym and continue being broken for days on end.

The handdryer in the Rhetoric annex male toilet doesnt seem to work but I doubt too many people use it anyway.

The lock on the first cubicle in JH - been broken for over a year

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭Kinski

Iontas has about the only decent gents on campus. Never use the arts block ones, they're a disgrace. They're just one step above those group toilets they had in Full Metal Jacket.

Oh, and people who piss on the toilet seat: there is a whole circle of hell reserved just for you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

Everyone can do that by accident. Just clean it the **** up :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭Kinski

Those seats do lift up. I've never done it, and there's no need for anyone else to. I thought most lads mastered directing a stream of piss into the bowl when they were about 4, but if it's such a major challenge to do that, then just use the urinals. But try not to get it all over the wall.

The taps in the Ladies bathroom in the common room didn't work last year, and still don't. I tiny stream comes out of all three and nothing more.

the water fountains in maynooth are a fcuking disgrace. the little trickle that comes out of them.it wouldnt surprise me if they were deliberately left like that so students will buy drinks from the shops instead.

its obvious from reading the other posts here that the management in maynooth dont give a sh1t about the quality of the university. its shocking that the uni gets almost 4 grand per year per student and the place is in the state it is. absolutely shocking

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

To be fair though unclejunior, there are worse places. I assume you've never been to Sligo IT :pac:

The fountains used to work but the water tasted really awful from them, I don't understand why they don't just remove those ones and install some of those fountains that are connected to the mains, all water systems I think they're called.
The trouble here of course is how long would they last before they are abused!

There should be water for drinking ffs it's a basic right you expect anywhere!

Unfortunately the management like every other public University or School run by the state don't have the money, the University dont get the 4K from the government/EU, that's why they want to bring fees back and charge us a huge registration fee. They don't even have enough money to put the heating on. It's a fcuking disgrace alright!

how do you mean? the reason the one in the arts block isnt working is because it started spitting out sediment with the water.

Someone in NUIM maintenance must be a boardsie.
Earlier today, I saw two shiny new hand dryers in the Gents toilet in the Arts building.
    Woohoo :D

I never said anything about the current one in the Arts Block being abused, what I said was, it used to work but the water was rotten, now I know why, my point is you put anything new in these places and within weeks they get wrecked and were back to square one with no drinking water in the Arts Building!

I think it's fair to say the Arts Block in general is a disgrace. The theatres have little to no ventilation. I'm still to see one toilet with a. A Lock, b. A toilet seat and c. Toilet paper. The reading room is a social hub during exams also with no ventilation.

    Always remember to bring towels!

I know I am straying off the topic here but what's the deal with that white canopy thing outside the new phoenix restaurant?
Is it supposed to be a shelter of some sort? Because all of the ground was getting wet underneath it today. So, I guess that's out.

Around exam time, that fan is useful to block out the whispering and chatting some people feel they must do.

I don't think it's been already said, but walking around the phoenix there is an ungodly stench; the drains around the side of it are giving off this smell and no one has even looked into it yet. Has anyone else noticed this?

It appears to be periodic, like the Leixlip village bridge stink.

The lock on a lecturer's door in the Arts Block has been broken for years.
But he likes it that way cos students can drop in for casual chats.

To follow up on this topic. I emailed about a maintenance issue about 3 weeks ago and it has been fixed. So yeah, if you email them about something they will fix it.

If you ask about it, you'll probably told that it's left that way for "security reasons"

Like others, I am sorry to stray off the topic, however, whatever happened to the consolidation of the Printing cards that would be applicable to all printers (union, library, arts block) this year? Was this a false promise by our beloved SU Leader?

I would like to know the answer to this as well... Especially considering the "broken promises" video the SU posted on Facebook earlier.

    Would be terribly hypocritical.

I'll speak to this, I presented the progress on it at the first Union Council this year.

Short answer: it's nearly ready, will happen in February. Students who don't currently have the 1K MiFare card (technical name for the card, will be called the 'Campus Card' most likely') will be able to go to student records office in February (start of March at the latest, in case of unexpected artifacts) and get their new student card for free.

You'll be able to top it up definitely from coin / note machines around campus and online banking, and hopefully from local atms (the same way you do with phone credit) - atms require the co-operation of the banks, which is slightly more tricky, what with there being a few different banks.

You'll be able to use it for printing anywhere on campus, but also anywhere on campus where you can exchange cash i.e. Londis, Chill, etc.

Long answer: long answer which outlines the whole process is extremely long. Best explained in detail in person, so drop up to me this week if you see me at one of the march stalls. If not there I'll be in my office. But there'll be a full report when it's fully implemented.

Any further Qs on it, you can get me at president@nuimsu.com - I'm not comfortable discussing projects that involve other staff on the internets. Or you can drop in in person, I'll be in Arts Block or JH for a lot of the week promoting the stop fees campaign.

Ah the MiFare Classic, good to see the university decided to invest an a technology that is already thoroughly broken.
    So free money you say?

what has the university no system in place to deal with maintanance issues or do they depend on students to 'tell' them about it?
