In college we're spending a lot of time on the skull, which is seriously intricate in places... For instance, this is the sphenoid bone, which is kind of in the centre of the skull:





I think it's fairly amazing that all the bones can form, and not only that, but fit together to make the skull, with blood vessels and nerves and everything running through it!

Then in a lecture a rare thing called craniofacial duplication was mentioned, and I was literally like :eek:... It's basically partial or full duplication of the face... For one thing, it's due to excess (I think) of a protein called Sonic Hedgehog Homolog! :P But more than that, I think it's just so amazing that the skull can actually develop in such a way given how complex it normally is - with the brain, bones, nerve supply, blood supply and drainage and (maybe???) lymphatic drainage, which then has to join to the neck. Granted, it's a super rare condition, and perfect formation of the head and faces is apparently never successful. Still, it's just.. like... woah :eek:.


It's very sad in practice, unfortunately, because very, very few people or animals with the disorder survive.

Both are fully functional faces, including the mouths, all 4 eyes and noses. I think it's just fascinating... Here's the wikipedia article, which mentions Lali significantly towards the end.

Very unfortunately, though, she (needlessly, I think) became sick at about 2 months and died soon after she finally reached hospital. Her story is given in the wikipedia article anyway, and it's pretty upsetting and a bit frustrating.



I don't mean to be showcasing her as a 'freak' or anything, either... I just think the idea of the anatomy involved is really interesting!
