LUKE ‘MING’ FLANAGAN wore a Louis Copeland suit made out of hemp in the Dáil chamber this morning to highlight the 10 year anniversary of his campaign to have cannabis legalised.
A spokesperson for Louis Copeland confirmed that it was the first time the high-end tailor had created a suit made out of hemp.
Speaking to theJournal.ie, the TD for Roscommon-Leitrim South said that he had bought the material outside of Ireland but that the suit had been made in Dublin. “If I could have purchased it here, I would have,” he said.
The hemp suit is “very comfortable, excellent material, and it’ll be my attire for many an occasion from now on,” said the TD.
Flanagan said that it is ten years since he posted joints to journalists and members of the Oireachtas as part of a National Legalise Cannabis Day – but that little has changed.
“In the 10 years that have passed, it is estimated that €7.5 billion has ended up in the pockets of the kind of people who had Veronica Guerin killed. 60,000 people have ended up with a criminal record and for what? What was the goal?”
“The idea was to reduce usage – that hasn’t happened. It was supposed to make life safer for people – that hasn’t happened”.
Flanagan emphasised the specific issue of cannabis being sold with adulterated substances which are seriously harmful to the health of the user, noting that silicon, crushed up car tyres and “God knows what” is being added to cannabis. “Someone found dealing the substance with these adulterants in it should receive a stricter sentence”, he said.
Flanagan, who gave up smoking cannabis several years ago, said that the best way to guarantee that people know what kind of cannabis they have is to legalise it.
Flanagan will be modelling the suit at a fashion in show in Dún Laoghaire on Thursday evening in aid of the National Maritime Museum of Ireland. Fellow independent TDs Mick Wallace and Richard Boyd-Barrett will also be taking part in the show.

Hemp is fantastic for clothing! i had a few tshirts made from it. Really comfy and light. Its a very useful "weed".

I used to have a bit of respect for him standing up for what he believed in but he was investigated and said he wouldn't smoke weed again...

Hemp (not to be confudes with "cannabis hemp") is a great substance and one that is totally undercultivated in Ireland. It grows very well here and hemp can be used for all sorts, paper, cloth, plaster, insulation etc. Its just the outraged joe Duffy type lunatic here that makes it unacceptable to be farmed here in commercial amounts.

To be fair to Flanagan he is right about legalising cannabis here, its just a pity no government has the balls to back him up on it. Several countries and states have legalised it in various ways and we should look at them and learn from them.

Anything that takes cash out of the pockets of the McCarthy-Dundon scum and their cohorts is to be welcomed but the prevailing attitude is that a vocal minority as witnessed in the Liveline Head Shop incident will usually win out.

cannabis is big business and he's one of the few (if not the only one) TDs that actually see the upside of it being legal...

Im not sure what you want him to do, do you want him to smoke weed get a criminal record and be removed from the dail?

At one point divorce, getting information about abortion from your Gp, contraception and oh homosexuality were illegal in Ireland. should the campaigners for them have taken your approach and said ah sure its illegal lets give up?

Cannabis is illegal, but to be fair to Flanagan is campaigning peacefully to have it legalised. Its not the first time this has happened in Ireland.

Contaception was illegal but it didn't stop women going peacefully (and illegally) to the north to buy them back in the 70's.

Homosexuality was illegal, it didn't stop David Norris admitting to being one and campaigning peacefully to have it decrimminalised in the 80's.

The suit is not illegal, its made out of standard hemp which contains virtually no THC.

Is it not up to him to spend HIS wages as he sees fit? Hemp clothing is not illegal.

If we all lay down and took what the system dished out to us with no one trying to push the boundaries the world would be a worse place (think homosexuality laws in Ireland - "don't try and change the laws guys(girls) -it's illegal, just get over it")

Maybe he gave up toking in the first place because "the cause" might be taken more seriously then - "legalize weed" (IMHO) has more impact coming from a politician who doesn't toot rather than one who does................"ah sure he's just saying that cos he likes to get stoned himself"

He's fighting for it in the way he has to, he is an elected member of the Dáil and while a lot of those cnuts like to flout the laws he is obeying them but still trying to change them. I personally don't think he should have given up weed, and even doubt he did, but he is at least trying because he can think logically and critically unlike the rest of the twats there.

I know hemp clothing is not illegal, it's the fact he could have got any suit made but he chose hemp to make a silly point.

people need to stop comparing contraception, divorce or homosexuality to the legalisation of weed btw. These matters bear no resemblance.

Yeah, California has it legalised for medicinal use, with "medicinal" used in the loosest sense possible. Between 0.5% and 1% of Californians buy it legally for "medicinal" use.
