This is about as smutty as my shooting game addiction is going to get I think. Today I received an official Taito G-Net PCB. It's had the BIOS flashed (to the latest 2011 revision) and accepts games on compact flash cards via a PCMCIA slot (the exact same way official Taito G-Net cards are made).

OK, it's a bit of a grey area, but it plays exactly the same and will do me just fine! Of course one day I'd like to source G-Darius and Night Raid cards but that's for another time.

Here's a few shots of the board, I've uploaded a video of it running which you can find in the WARNING! SHMUP PORN! thread. :)

Very nice dude. You sure G-Darius plays on that board? It's not listed here. Says it runs on the FX-1B mobo? Know nothing about either really but curious.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Yep. It plays every single G-Net game (23 of them I think the total is) including both revisions of G-Darius. :D

Just been playing a bit of Raycrisis there. Miles better than the PS1 version, the soundtrack is rather nice too.

The G-Net cards are essentially custom PCMCIA cards. What the BIOS on the PCB does is check for a password on the official card. The modded BIOS bypasses the password and the encryption and therefor doesn't check to see if the card inserted is legit.

The downside is you can only flash one game to a card. The upside is...well....

    DARIUS

    :D:D:D

Cool stuff. I must admit, don't think I've really played many Darius games and I was permanently put off that G one watching o1s1n spend ages on the last boss at retr0's once.

Just did a bit more research in to the board I bought. I found out why it's able to play G-Darius. It is a completely legit G-Net PCB system It's just the BIOS actually takes it a stage further so it's able to play Taito G-Net, Tecmo TPS, Atari PS and Taito FX-1B games.

Hence it's OK to work with G-Darius and the 2.0 revision.

That's probably because he had no jellies. Jellies provide the shooting game fan with a superior inner strength to destroy King Fossil! :D

@SteveSI where did you source the replacement screens from?

Ebay has lots of them. When I say screen I actually mean the screen lens by the way.
Most screens are perfect when you open these babies up and have a look. Unless its faulty or something.
In that case buy a working beat up looking Game Boy(whatever version) for next to nothing and use it for parts.

    Game Boy replacement parts:

I try to avoid the Hong Kong stores as you can get nasty cheapy screens from them I've heard.

Few more games I managed to get signed:

    IMG_20111108_192316.jpg

    The two from Steve Wright

    IMG_20111108_192348.jpg

Superman by John Dunn. I had to send this to an Atariager in the U.S. to send to him, he wouldn't sign it unless he had a postage paid envelope to send it back. Ah well, got it eventually.

    IMG_20111108_192448.jpg

The two Star Wars games programmed by Rex G. Bradford. Another nice guy to talk with.

Well they're drying up now, I've one more to send off and it might be the best of the lot, stay tuned!!:pac:

I have to say fair play to those lads who are signing the carts for you, it really adds something to see carts signed by their coders/devs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

Have to agree with EnterNow that those carts are great. Fair play to them for signing them for you.

I've a wish list I'd love to have my games signed by but I think it would be super difficult to get them done. :(

Kudos to you batari, the carts are great and the letters and photos are a lovely touch.

Whats the story with that PCB arrangement pyongyang?
    What does it do?
Does that flash card carry the game files?
Need more input! (to paraphrase Johnny-5).

I'm interested in seeing what else my Supergun can do aside from running my MVS board.

Sounds more or less like a legit board, running a hacked bios, which allows it to "skip authentication checks" ahem ahem cough ya know :D

That's more or less exactly what it's doing. The hardware is completely legit. What normally happens when you boot an official card, the board contacts the card looking for an encrypted password and an extra piece of authentication. You can tell the difference as a legit card performs a 'loading' check on boot then loads the game on a separate loading screen.

The 'tweaked' version is the exact same game flashed to a compact flash card that slots in to a PCMCI card that goes in to the slot on the board where an official G-Net card would go. The difference however is the authentication process is skipped as the BIOS is altered to not look for authentication, hence it skips the first process and the game boots up.

The best part about the modified BIOS though is that it will accept games designed for other boards, which is why you are able to play G-Darius v1.0 and v2.0 on a G-Net board for example.

The legit board also plays host to lots of fun connection options. 3 and 4 player ports, trackballs etc. Cool stuff which I probably will never use but it's fun to see it on the board anyway.

I think it's a very cool modification. One day I will maybe look to source official cards, but for now it's a great way to play a whole host of quality shooting games on a really cool system. :)

EDIT: Sorry Adultapplebeveragemale, I forgot to answer your question. The PCB's are arranged in 3. The bottom being the motherboard, the middle is an audio board and the top is the I/O board. :)

EDIT2: Check out my video in the SHMUP PORN! thread if you want to see it running. I'm going to post some more videos tonight of G-Darius v1.0 and v2.0 and check out the revision differences. Then I'm going to make a 657hr long documentary on how brilliant the Darius series is (like a certain someone who has an obsession with Boulder Dash).

I have just spied one on ebay for 200 with 30 shipping, and that's dollars, folks, so 167 in the euro.
Not too bad, for shooty heaven!

I suppose a vertically aligned screen is essential is it?
Or are the games playable on a horizontally orientated tv???

It's a mish-mash of styles really. Some are vert some hori. Don't forget there's some awesome puzzle games and (my favourite) mahjong games available too. Plus you have RC de Go! and some fighting games too.

€167 (delivered?) is an excellent price so long as it's a full kit with the 2011 BIOS.

Don't forget, you can only load one game at a time to a card, you can't dump loads of games on one card and select them on boot. G-Net systems save your progress on some games so you might want to buy more cards to save having to reflash each time. That's what I am planning to do as I don't want to loose my high feeble scores and 1cc's 987cc's.
