Members of Parliament will debate Britain's membership of the European Union. They will then vote on whether the people of Britain should have a referendum to decide whether Britain should remain in or pull out of the EU.

The Labour Party and the Conservative Party are using the whips to force their MPs to vote against a referendum which could be particularly embarrassing for the Prime Minister David Cameron, if MPs vote in favour of the motion. Both parties should give their MPs a free vote in this important debate, already some 76 MPs including 60 Conservatives have said they will vote against the government in order to send a clear message to the Prime Minister that Britain does want a referendum.

Well if the voters go the wrong way in the referendum, David Cameron can just tell them to vote again until they get it right

Where is the UK going to go when it leaves Europe? The Carribean? Tempting...

If the people of the UK want to leave and there's evidence of support for a referendum then the government has no right to ignore that. Not sure the whole "we know what's best for you" attitude from government has worked well in the past.

Have to say though, if the UK does leave, I think the EU is done for. Don't think the EU could withstand the combination of losing one of it's biggest budget contributors and the political consequences of a country seeking to leave.

I don't think they'll get anywhere near a referendum. The Labour government wriggled out of it and the present coalition will too. They won't trust the plebs with such an important decision.

it would be a disaster financially for the UK - but if the peasants get the vote they will want out - becasue that is just the way the brits roll - want nuttfink 2 do with them bleedin forginers - ukip and edf will have a field day

and also the republic would also lose out becasue boarder controls and tariffs would have to be re introduced - and 75% of our exports go by road via the UK - going back to the stone age really

but if ya wanna go Britain and march proudly back to the last time you were anything of a international force ( 1944 ) be our guest's

but we all know - not a chance of the British peasant getting a vote becasue its not really a democracy is it ?

The EU is a disaster. The British people should be entitled to a referendum.

do you know what keith i agree with ya - the brits should have the right to vote on their own future - but unfortunately you cant - remember
SUBJECTS don't have the right determine their own future

great little democracy ya got going there - keep up the great work

you could always move down south 2 our republican utopia Keith - even as a foreigner you can vote in European referendum - you as a subject of the British crown don't have that right

There are no subjects in the UK, they are citizens

That changed about two decades ago

If the UK was to leave it'd more than likely remain part of EFTA so there'd be no tariffs. Plus we have a Common Travel Area with the UK so no border controls between the UK and Ireland. That's why we both stayed out of Schengen Area

Norway is not in the EU but we can still do business with them without tariffs and vise versa. It would be the same if the UK left.

If they leave, does that mean we can get duty free booze going between the two countries?

A tempting prospect it must be said.

The pro EU force will win by a very comfortable margin.

Its a shame, the British people want their sovereignty back.

However, real signs of discontent are beginning to appear, which in my opinion as a centre right, telegraph reading scumbag and lesser person to those mildly of the left, is a very good sign.
