Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    s_50massa.jpg

Felipe Massa puts a brave face on at the podium ceremony in Brazil 2008. A few minutes earlier, Massa had crossed the line in 1st place, winning the 2008 F1 World Championship, the first Brazilian since Ayrton Senna to do so, and the first to do so on home ground. 30 seconds after Felipe crossed the line, Timo Glock back in 5th place runs wide at the final corner, allowing Lewis Hamilton to pass him and claim an extra point, which means he wins the title.

30 seconds of the ultimate glory for a racing driver, in the melting pot of emotion that a home race and Sennas homeland could produce, only to have it snatched away from you. Such dignity in sport is rarely seen, and I, for one, thought more of Massa as a loser that day, than I think of most winners.

What about Pat O'Callaghan? He got his first gold medal way back in 1928 and another in the following olympics. He's certainly a hero in my eyes. He was our family doctor many years ago in Clonmel until he retired. I'd love to know what happened his medals.

I know lots of pics of Senna posted already but his career was filled with great moments such as this one when Senna won in his home country of Brazil for the first time which didn't come till 1991:
    sennabrazil1991_595.jpg
The Brazilian qualified his McLaren on pole, and spent the race holding off the faster Williams cars of Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese. Mansell's challenge was ended by a broken gearbox with 10 laps to go.

Unknown to anyone outside McLaren, Senna had been in gearbox trouble for some time, having lost fourth gear. Mansell's retirement left Patrese in second place, and catching Senna rapidly.

With two laps to go, Senna also lost fifth and third gears, meaning he had to take most of the corners in sixth, nearly stalling several times. Complicating his task further, it was starting to rain, and as the weather deteriorated Senna began gesturing to stewards to stop the race.

It ran full distance, though, and, utterly exhausted and in extreme pain, Senna had to be lifted out of his car.
After Senna won the GP, he fainted because of dehydration. He was trasported to the podium by the medical car.
