The Lomu try against England in 1995 really is a memory I'll never forget. The game was just about to be declared "open" i.e. players were now allowed accept payment to play. Effectively the old established clubs and unions who were run by amateurs were in no mans land. The English clubs, some of which were bankrolled by millionaires, started recruiting players from all over with the offer of what then were huge salaries and thus became very powerful. At one stage it was discussed whether to move Ireland training sessions to London because of the amount of Irish players over there compared to the few left here. If this happened it would have been a tragedy for the sport here. Leinster and Munster would not be of any significance now. The picture below sums up the potential tragedy. English international players were refused permission from their clubs to tour with the international team to Australia. Many of the players who England had to bring were never heard of again. You can see the score board in the background of what happened.

The IRFU took control and started to bring the players home and has now put Ireland in a position never once dreamt of 2 decades ago. The English RFU still has an uneasy existence with the clubs and it's international team has struggled since 2003.

Two of greatest hurlers of their generation.

30th June 1957. The Munster semi-final between Cork and Tipperary at Limerick which Cork won by 5-2 to1-11. In the second half Christy Ring went off with a broken wrist. Mick Mackey. who was doing umpire for referee Mick Hayes of Clare, says something to Christy Ring as he leaves the field. They took the comments made to their graves.

Can't believe this hasn't been posted yet.

Billy McNeill of Celtic lifts the European Cup in Lisbon in 1967 after beating Inter Milan 2-1.

The team were known as the Lisbon lions (below)

    lisbonlions.jpg

    Interesting facts about the team.

They were all born within 30 miles of Celtic park.

They created over 40 chances on goal against the defensive Milan side

They were the first non-Mediterranean/non-Latin team to win the European cup.

They remain the only team to have completed the quadruple (Domestic treble and European Cup)

They won every competition they entered that year.

After his Formula One debut at the 1973 British Grand Prix, Williamson's second Formula One appearance was at the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort Circuit.

On his eighth lap, a suspected tyre failure caused his car to flip upside down and catch fire. Williamson had not been seriously injured by the impact, but was trapped under the car.

The track marshals were both poorly trained and badly equipped, and could not assist him. Another driver, David Purley, upon witnessing the crash, pulled over and abandoned his own race in a desperate and valiant attempt to rescue Williamson, but he was unable to put out the fire or turn the car upright.
By the time the first fire engine arrived and the fire was extinguished, Williamson had died of asphyxiation.

In 2003, on the thirtieth anniversary of his fatal crash, a bronze statue of Williamson was unveiled at the Donington Park circuit in his native Leicestershire. Then-owner Tom Wheatcroft had provided financial backing to Williamson, and described the day Williamson died as "the saddest day of my life".

Gut-wrenching to watch, the marshals clearly were woefully under equipped and prepared for something like this, leading to major changes in motor sport safety.
