Presidential hopeful Sean Gallagher has said :

Independent candidate Sean Gallagher said he would like to see a new anthem to reflect a new Ireland.

“To make it less militaristic – I think it needs to be modernised,” he said. “I think it was written at a time that different to where we are now, and I would certainly like to see that it could be sung North and South.”

Any thoughts on this ? Should Ireland change it's national anthem to make it 'less militaristic and more inclusive' ?

Change the British National Anthem to make that one more inclusive instead.

    No.

And I'm no IRA head or SF supporter. But I think it recognises the tens of thousands of people who gave their lives throughout the centuries for Ireland.

Plus, before the start of a football match we need a good song about a little killing and a murdering - not dancing with fairies and holding hands

This is Ireland. Any proposal for a new National Anthem will end up like this:

    A) Someone from Westlife will write it.
    B) An X Factor type competition will ensue to get to pick who sings it.
    C) Brendan O'Connor will be a judge.

    No thanks.

    Please not Ireland's Call.

I voted no, but on the bright side that one would be considered 'inclusive'. To people who feel excluded by the Irish Natioanl Anthem.

It's also beat Louis Walsh or Jedward's entries.

Anyone voting 'yes - change it' care to elaborate on why the current Irish National anthem makes them feel excluded ?

Depends on whether we want to 'woo' the North into a new dispensation (A New 32 county Ireland) - or Not? Currently the National Anthem is hated by Unionists, so maybe it is time for a change, unless of course we don't want a new dispensation on this island :)

    No No No.

Mr. Gallagher is a gimp imho

If he does get in I guarantee that the Anthem will not be changed.

Although I can imagine him trying to do it in an X Factor, phone in, make a profit, sort of a way.

That wasn't what Sean Gallagher said.

He did not say 'in the event of a united Ireland'.

He said it was too militaristic and he wanted to make it more inclusive.

I think you are adding that part about a United Ireland.

I think it was written at a time that different towhere we are now, and I would certainly like to see that it could be sung North and South

So it should be about unemployment, emigration, poor people getting screwed over. Swap the banks for the British army, and we are not really that different a nation to when it was written.

lots of countries have militaristic national anthems, look at france and the marseillaise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Marseillaise#Text but i think its great for sporting events when you want a rousing battle cry for your team, and adds atmosphere.

Change the British National Anthem to make that one more inclusive instead.
Selected all options to see what would happen.

I'm not bothered about changing it to be honest, it's fine as it is and doesn't make me want to cut down the saxons with a sword.

If people were dead set on changing it, I wouldn't mind keeping the words etc if someone could make it a bit catchier tunewise. You listen to la Marseillaise and that's a catchy song.

I agree with Gallagher, it should be changed, preferably to something more violent like 'the Boys Of Kilmicheal' or 'Kevin Barry'.

It's taken me nearly 40 years to learn the words to our National Anthem. Fúck off if ye think I'm learning a new one.

What a joke that a Dragon's Den judge thinks he can be President of Ireland. As for an anthem change - no chance.

I wont be voting for him but I agree with him on this. An actual Irish anthem would be better than the republican war song we have now.

What does Sean mean by making it more inclusive, who does it exclude? He did not say, a man of mystery indeed!
