They should ban all alcohol apart from Champagne.. it won't solve any issues but at least the 'problem' drinkers will appear to have some class.

Also, free monocles for everyone on longterm social welfare.

If you can't see a problem then it doesn't exist.

Raising the price is only going to leave the children with less as more will be spent on booze.
But our government cant see past their noses or the hand in their our pockets.

You made a mistake, I've corrected it for you. ;)

Excise is about 45c on a pint here compared to about 42c in the UK. Difference in VAT is about what, 3% now? All told it's a difference of under 10%.

Tax on a 500ml can (@5% ABV) being sold here is under 40c plus 8c in VAT so 48c total. Selling for a quid would mean roughly another 10c in VAT so still a cost of over 40c without tax. I'd be fairly sure that the suppliers are selling it to supermarkets and so on for quite a bit less than that. I'd like to see evidence of widespread below-cost selling tbh.

To roll out an argument that regularly pops up with regard to smokers and fatties....blah blah blah, drain on health care, blah blah blah...increase the cost.

Pals? sure dont most of them own pubs.

Now if pubs could sell at off licence prices that were slightly raised it'd be a win win

As long as they don't increase the price of toilet duck I'm not too worried.

    Indeed.

I would hazard a guess that a lot of the same people who championed the Danish fat tax in the last fat person thread would be complaining about the abolition of below-cost selling of alcohol.

I don't mind them putting up the price of Toilet Duck, so long as Castrol GTX stays the same.

Seriously though this is nanny state sh!te.

Would Roisin Shortall ever just go and do one FFS

She is a sad little girl, who lived a sheltered life behind the walls of desire not knowing how to feel love only by actions onto others

They tax my fags to the hilt so being a begrudger I'm glad they're considering excessively taxing booze too. Too much nannyism.... I bought a packet of cigarettes from a check-out girl who doesn't remember the days of 10 cigarettes. Made me feel ancient. All getting rid of the ten pack did was make me buy twenty instead. Hasn't stopped the teens smoking... all those who do can afford it more than I can.

im not even a massive drinker but im getting really fcuking fed up of all these taxes disguised as health and safety, its nearly time to pull the pitchfork out

From reading this thread, you can do anything you want to the people of this country.Tax them into the ground, cut services, force them to pay back the debts of speculators. But there is one thing you can't do: increase the price of beer in supermarkets!

I don't mind them, I know higher taxes are coming, that is inevitable with these "health and safety" taxes I have some measure of control. I can choose to drink, smoke, or eat fatty foods, less.

But when they hit me with a bigger income tax, which I am certain they will, that's it, money pissed away.

i do, they think they can get away with anything in this damn country, and the sad thing is for the most part they can, we do nothing to stop them, next we will have a air tax so the government can cut down airborne pollutants  and then a walking tax as we are eroding the ground and it needs to be maintained.......like the roads, sad thing is i could actually see those being implemented

Well I mind them, it just with the dire economic situation we are in higher taxes are inevitable, and I just think these taxes are better, for me, then a higher income tax.

But overall I wish I didn't have to pay any tax.

both my parents are public servants and have been taxed to ****e, their car tax is nuts, the just had a bit of land taken off them by the council who gave them half of what it was worth only to have half that sum taken in tax, theres a water tax coming.......in ireland ffs  there are hundreds more i could list but it would just get me angry, must be all the fluoride in the water that makes the irish so docile when it comes to this stuff

This all the work of the VFI these guys are pure scum. They are no more than racketeering drug dealers.Charging a 350% to 1200% mark up on the price of alcohol and they still complain they cant make a profit.Thankfully drinking attitudes are changing in Ireland and most pubs will be obsolete in 20 years.
