I can honestly say, i wouldn't pee on them if they were on fire, i wonder have the people that defend these dirty bastards ever been on the end of them robbing from you, or leaving an area where you live in bits. They are low life scum that don't want to abide by the same rules as everyone else, but they still want to be treated the same..

That's no way to talk about property speculaters, bankers and politicians.

    They're not all bad.

I've never had a good experience with them at all. I've delt with plenty of them and had to quit 2 jobs because of the abuse you get from them. That's why I'm glad I no longer work retail because they make you're daily life hell. They do what they want and get away with it, they know no one will do anything about it.

Having taught them, I have had very different experiences.

On saying that, back in my part-time job days, I worked in hotel bars and I could say the very same thing about non-travellers.

    Traveller who wont travel.

In England they are very anal about planning laws, the same here but only recently, if they broke planning laws there really isn't a case to support them. At least I haven't heard a good one.

Because they are travellers and they can do what ever the hell they want, break whatever law they like and nothing will happen to them.

    Not true.

I separate the issues, they are seen as travellers who broke the law, but they are people who broke the law, you are just not allowed buy a piece of land and do what the hell you want with it. Isn't that a good thing???

I would say, on the whole, yes.

I do think that the coverage of the Traveller community's problems is magnified by the media. Bad news makes good news etc.

So they have barracaded themselves in now? There is no way in or out, if they are their illegally why don't they just move?

It's not as if they don't have any homes to go to.

I suspect most of the Travellers will leave except for a few hardcore ones.

Around 50% (or more) is supposed to be gone already it been reported.
Only the die-hards have stayed, not just to fight for their actual land but to try highlight issues concerning their traveling community as a whole.

I thought the ones that where their legally where allowed to stay.

Since when did painting an entire group of people with the same brush become reasonable?

As far as I'm aware, anecdotal evidence does not support an argument, especially one that favours discrimination.

Hmmm. 'Anecdotal evidence' always surfaces when someone is defending any traveller misbehaving.

Here comes the PC brigade. And earlier than expected.

When is it reasonable to paint them all with the same brush?

When everyone of them you've ever encountered (it's no coincidence - and the same goes for the large majority of those I know) have tried intimidation, extortion and brazen thieving.

Oh and let's not forget the king of the knackers fight. What a nice bunch of athletes.

They ALL want something for nothing, they don't pay taxes, they don't want to (and they bloody well don't) abide by the law of the land yet they want to be treated the same as everyone else.

One more thing: I don't give a f*ck what anyone says - they fcuking stink (!!!) as well.

"I am haunted by the human chimpanzees I saw along that hundred miles of horrible country ... to see white chimpanzees is dreadful; if they were black, one would not feel it so much, but their skins, except where tanned by exposure, are as white as ours".

Having read some of the bile spouted out by some of the posters in this thread, you'd be forgiven for thinking that I was quoting another poster. However, this was written by Charles Kingsley's about his visit to Ireland in 1860.

You would think that as the times have moved on, that people's mentalities would be more informed & not stuck back in the 1890's, but it is apparent that there are still a fair amount of knuckle dragging neanderthals knocking about the place.

To simply tar an entire race or community with the same brush is disgraceful.. "fuckers", "dirty shites", "dirty bastards".. insinuating that they are all law breakers... I mean for fuck sake lads - grow up. Do you not realise that these are exactly the same types of things the British used to say about the Irish, that the whites in America used to say about the blacks... that every other racist says about anyone they fear or know nothing about?

And if you think that racism is simply defined by colour or birthplace, then quite simply, you are wrong & you are a racist. If that is something you can live with, then fine, but you should also understand how petty, small minded & backward that makes you... and that is nothing to be proud of.

Now.. back to the topic on hand. The simple fact is that these people have broken planning laws & where they live is an unauthorised development. Unathorised developments happen all over the country in Ireland - people build stuff all the time without planning permission & then in a lot of cases apply for retention. Most times, they get a grant of permission. This is nothing new & not a law that is solely broken by travellers - it's much more prevelant among the settled community.

There is no doubt in my mind that the British government pushed this case through as a populist action.. they wanted to prove a point & they have done so.

Now, by the letter of the law, they are within their rights to do so, but at what cost? Apart from the financial cost, which is massive, these travellers will simply have to move on to somewhere else.

So in the end, it's not a problem solved, just one moved on.

Let's not be mistaken here - this is not a victory for anyone.

    Fair warning.

Abusive generalizations will result in bans.

Who are these young middle class people defending Travelers rights?

They are. A few others also have stayed on also however partly is thought, to keep traveler issues in the spotlight, not just fighting to mainly preserve their extra-curriculum building work.

(A bit like Martin McG in the Pres' race some in the media have commented. Even if they SF lose, they win!)

I enjoy watching boxing and MMA and of the Travellers fights I've watched on youtube I have to say that they are extremely well refereed.

If you're against contact sports then fine. If you're only against Traveller fights then that's a bit inconsistent.

I'm going to have to get my Health and Safety 'P.C. Brigade' tattoo :D

I just don't like it when I'm heading home from work and a traveller thinks to himself "Gee I need to practice bare knuckle boxing" and decides to give me a few punches for no reason. Really how do you deal with travellers? I've been told to ignore them but that just seems to piss them off even more. The guardi won't do anything, I keep getting told the same thing, there is nothing they can do, they're travellers. I was waiting at the Luas stop and they started hurling abuse at me, I put on my Ipod and pretended they wheren't their so they decided the best way to get my attention was to hurl a bottle at me. Then they threatened to follow me home and rape my mother, really are a lovely bunch of people.

I personally haven't had any trouble from Travellers.

Unprovoked assault is totally unacceptable no matter who carries it out.

The cops saying 'there is nothing we can do' is not good enough. Ask for the cops name next time you call and tell him you are in danger and insist that someone is sent out.

    Failing that...

I'm arguing against prejudice on principle.

I don't need any evidence to support it - it's unethical.

Do you reckon the travellers are all checked out by doctors after the fight and given the mandatory hospital visit after a KO to check for concussion etc? Mandatory 6 week suspension from fighting after being KOed too? Do they have a strict governing body and set weight classes? Or are they just some lads thumping the ****e out of each other in a back garden somewhere?
Seriously, dont try and compare bare knuckle boxing to MMA, ffs...

Oh for f*ck sake, do travellers ever stop with the hypocrisy? Holding onto crosses while keeping slaves?

There's only a few advantages to being a traveller, really. They'll fade out soon enough.
