    http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/1018/alcohol.html

Despite having one of dearest alcohol prices in world already and with no sign that that has affected demand significantly, the minister now wants us to pay even more for drink.

I can see a massive break for the border if this law comes in, people brining in crates of booze from Newry, filling vans for the year and a massive blackmarket in smuggled drink.

Instead of attacking those who misuse alcohol they take easy option and hit everyone. When you hit everyone , you hit no one.
I dont even drink much but will be stocking up abroad when this law comes in.

really I thought it said this..
Minister Roisin Shortall has told a seminar in Dublin that she is taking legal advice on how to tackle below-cost selling of alcohol.

The Minister of State with responsibility for primary care says she is taking legal advice on how to tackle below-cost selling of alcohol.
Minister Roisin Shortall was speaking at a seminar in Dublin on the impact on children of parents' drug and alcohol misuse.
Alcohol Action Ireland - one of the co-organisers of the event - said that roughly one in 11 children is living with parents who have drink problems.
AAI said more information is needed about the numbers misusing alcohol so help can be provided.
Minister Shortall said the Government will have an action plan in place before the end of 2011 to tackle alcohol misuse.
One of the areas it is looking at is the availability of cheap drink.

Research presented at the event showed children of parents with alcohol and drug addictions are more likely to experience problems with mental health and social skills.
Delegates heard these problems can continue in adult life and affect their own children.

I think you're being a bit over-sensationalist there, OP. All the article says is that Shorthall is looking into the issue of below cost selling of alcohol and nothing about jacking up the prices of alcohol across the board.

Though on a positive note, I hear the Daily Mail are looking for new hacks.

We should tackle below-preformance of Ministers first.

If you triple the price of off licence sales and pub sales prices remain static then the overall average price of drink sold rises. Of course if off licence drink was tripled demand for off licence would fall but i dont neccessarily think demand in pubs will rise. It will drive a black market in drink.

Forgive me but is she not on a big fat ministers salary with a big fat pension, is there not something more important she should be doing? Wast of money, sack her and we'll all go on the batter with the money we save.

If they are going to tackle low cost alcohol which is available in Off-licenses and supermarkets, they need to lower the price of pub drink.

If this thread was about Nanny Statisticians it'd be more interesting.

My nan could tell you the percentage of people in her village that went to England and caught 'the gay' right off the top of her head. Amazing!

Genuine question - How would you propose that they do this?

You can't very well have an alcoholics counter that serves said alcoholics more expensive beer.

Raising revenue under the guise of a public health scheme. shocking!

The issue is not to do with pub or off licence prices, but the below cost selling of alcohol by supermarkets.

I'm not sure how challenging this practice will effect people's drinking habits (probably not at all), but you should at least read the article you posted a link to before making assumptions & jumping to wild conclusions about black markets being created out of thin air.

Op why would you stock up on drink if you're not gonna drink? That makes less sense than the guy who had his house converted into a giant toilet.

She's looking into the possibility of dealing with the issue of below-cost selling of drink, no need to take it so personally.

As usual in this country they try to introduce a blanket measure without tackling the real problem. For most people who can enjoy a drink without beating the crap out of someone or generally being a twat they will now have to pay more for their alcohol of choice.

For the people who this is supposed to help, alcoholics etc it won't make one iota of difference.

    you need to travel more

there are LOTS of places more expensive for booze than ireland. the difference is that those countries arent full of people who'll still go out and drink 10+ pints twice a week

the problem isnt the cost, its the fact that irish people are complete and utter idiots when it comes to drink

funny thing the supermarkets were very much against the ban on below cost selling when it was introduced way back.

Now that they are using it to their advantage the ban gets "ammended",

Off licence sales in supermarkets have been targetted year in year out. why? I dont know but I find it very odd indeed.....!

Firstly it was to do with underage drinking and anti social drinking so they restricted the opening hours and implemented a very strict code of practise for licence premises. Has it worked? again I dont know but if it did dont you think the government would be blowing their trumpet about its suscesses?

If they implement a unit price for booze in supermarkets then the same should apply in bars and night clubs etc mind you I would accecpt a different rate per facilitity however it would still show that there is a massive difference in price of booze between places. and if such a rate was not introduced for the bars and clubs it would further reinforce the idea that the publicians are behind this not the common good of the people.

ps the study showed us the relation between parents drinking and the resulting affect on children during their young lives and early adulthood. please give me a break you didnt need to spend a few thousand on "experts" to figure that one out.

The country is falling apart financially. This is a non-issue!

It's funny, I would have thought that there are more incidents of parents arguing over money which will have long term psychological effects on their children and is more widespread than alchohol related incidents.

Raising the price is only going to leave the children with less as more will be spent on booze.
But our government cant see past their noses or the hand in their pockets.

I think we are on the home straight for civil unrest. Its constant cuts cuts cuts zero positivity from the government no hope whatsoever! They havent got a clue on how to give the people a bit of moral.
