Could you cope being homeless?.

Looking at news and some threads,you might read some sad stories about those who barely struggle to make ends meet,or worry that they missed some petty thing in their life.

I ask,would you cope if you came homeless over night,would you make it on the streets,i think myself i would resort to crime so could be locked up for the night or mug someone out of desperation to pay for some food+drink.

Some of those who fall into the trap have addiction/mental problems,others money problems or nowhere simply to go.

Would you be able to cope?.

I'm also thankful to have a family who would support me if things got too bad.

I heard a man begging for money the other day to an oul fella, when he was refused money he went on about all his problems about being homeless.

I then heard the best reply ever to a homeless dude.
The oul fella said ''you have problems? you can go sleep in a lane tonight with no worries!. I have to go home to worry about a mortgage, try to make enough money to feed my fat son and then have to deal with horrible looks from my wife all night so don't talk to me about problems!''

Classic!

I know a lot of homeless people, and one of my closest friends died on the streets (I posted about him before, came home from Lebanon suffering Post Traumatic Stress).

I think I could cope in the short to medium term, but few homeless people live into old age.

Heard one boardsie tell a homeless beggar to "Fvck off" outside a bar one night - it disgusted me and has tainted my view's of him since.

There is nothing hard, or smart about telling some of the most vulnerable people in Irish society to "Fvck off".

Please God wherever you are never let me or mine become homeless.

I reckon those who couldn't cope are defined by their homes/careers/possesions/status. Seeing as I don't have any of those, I reckon I could survive on the streets.

I spent a night out with a group who had nowhere else to go only 3 weeks ago. I'm not belittling it as it did seem pretty tough in comparison to my own situation but it's not a million mile jump from where most of us are paying rent/mortgages/etc. - at least we wouldn't have to worry about all that nonsense.

Saying that, feeling completely safe is rare for everyone. We're all human at the end of the day!

It has nothing to do with any of the above for me, its more about having a warm place and a bed to sleep on. Also the begging or robbing for survival i find hard to do, plus youd be mixing with some fairly dodgey characters when living on the streets.

I'm not a very materialistic person at all but I can't imagine I'd survive long homeless. We might not have to worry about bills but what about the basic things like going to the bathroom, getting washed, keeping clean during periods, storing bedding during the day, where to keep a spare set of clothes? It might be ok for one night but coming into winter, when it's freezing and wet, I'd rather be worrying about my rent from inside my appartment, then outside with no bills.

If people think you can just get locked up for the cold nights and well it doesn't work out like that.
It takes a while for the court date and you will never receive the letters this leads to being on the run from the police.
The police don't want you if homeless unless to send you away for a while and not one or two nights.
Try ask the police will they just lock you up for the night because you don't have fair to get home.

As I said in my post, I spent one night out with them - from about 9pm to 7am. It makes me sick what they need to do to get through the day.

Thankfully I had a bed to go home to at the end of it all but everyone will do what they need to do according to their own morals to survive, house or not. You would surprise yourself on how long you would survive on the streets - its not the end of the world. No matter what, it will be outside your comfort zone despite your backgroud but you will do it regardless. You will do what needs to be done in order to survive.

Not getting on my high horse about it but it's just a shame the masses don't realise this. Maybe they'd be handing over the spare change easier - I will admit it is harder to know who should rightfully be given the change these days unfortunately. The genuine homeless I've spoken to are giving out about this as much as we are
