RTE news on the Dale Farm travellers

In the report just on, the female reporter said "They are all Irish but most were born in Britain".

What the fcuk is she on about?

I thought it was the Sun newspaper that came out with statements like that.

If England wanted them they would be English, don't worry about it OP we are used to it at this stage. They can come back to their home country we will welcome them.

Well it's more than that really.. Irish Travelers are a legally recognised ethic group.

The reporter is wrong in saying that they are Irish of course. It's like saying that all African-Americans are African.

Majority of Dale Farm Travellers have links with Limerick, Rathkeale is 80% owned by them and the locals left there dread when Dale farm go "home" on their summer holidays. Some nice buildings without planning there too.

I don't think this is fair and we have plenty of people like that here all ready. not travellers. Irish people.
I don't think you can blame all Limerick's problems on the Dundon's alone.

Off the top of my head, of last night's starting team, Dunne, Given, Doyle, Duff, O'Dea, Whelan, Andrews and Kelly are all Irish born. 8/11. But don't let the facts stand in the way of a tired old joke, eh?

While we're on the subject, Dale farm residents can't have it both ways.

They've sought to stay put by exhaustively appealing ruling after ruling and would most certainly have lauded the courts had they found in their favour.

Judgements not to their liking will be met with a 'screw you, just try and shift us' response.

It's that old chestnut - Demanding rights but abdicating responsibilities.

Agreed.

It makes me laugh how much someone's nationality winds people up. Nationality is a personal thing, it's how one identifies themselves. People consider themselves a certain nationality based on where they were born, grew up/live, or ancestry.

I'll give you an example. I've got a lot of Irish Americans in my family and there's a big range over what they consider themselves to be.

1) I have a family member who is Irish born to Irish parents but moved over to America when she was in her teens. She considers her American and not Irish.
2) I have a cousin who was born in America to Irish parents who considers himself Irish not American. He argues that he has no American blood in him and spent lots of summers in Ireland as a child.
3) Vast majority consider themselves Irish and American. Some first generation and second generation only see themselves as American which I guess is inevitable but then some are very proud of their Irish roots and really take to Irish culture - learn Gaelic, play hurling and so forth in the States. A lot embrace Irish culture more than the Irish themselves.

None of them are wrong in stating what nationality they are. It's not really for someone else to criticise what nationality you consider yourself to be.

P.S. I'm not going to wait for some clever bollix to say I consider myself Vanuatuan or whatever (no offence to any Vanuatans on boards.ie by the way, I know you lot have a big community here), because no one does that.

I think the travellers are our revenge on the English for Cromwell.
800 years of oppression vs dole cheats, thievery and unplanned housing.
I actually think we have gone to far with the revenge and am feeling slightly sorry for the English.
