Nah, I think when a nation has been subjugated and dominated by a hypocritical Church for many centuries. It's inevitable that when people become self-thinking, they will see through the bullshít and hypocrisy that has ruled them for so long. Your reference to minority religions is really irrelevant in this instance. As they share none of the guilt or abuses that were committed against us by this 'church'.

So being intolerant is the alternative...

I live in Holycross, these thieves have stolen the heart of the Abbey and the village. May all of our bad luck go with it. I do not wish bad on these thieves but as a believer in Karma I know they will not benefit from it in the long term.
    Amen

What do the first two commandments say about Karma?

The name of the abbey derives from a reputed portion of the True Cross preserved in a Gold Shrine set with precious stones. This had been presented by Pope Pascal II in 1110 to Donagh O'Brien, the grandson of Brian Boru. Such a sacred relic attracted multitudes of pilgrims, whose offerings enriched the Abbey immensely. Prior to the restoration of Holycross in 1975, the shrine was in the care of the Ursuline Convent, Blackrock, Cork.

This implies that you think Tracy Emin would improve the Mona Lisa.

that tale would be 1000x more hilarious if his name was Denis O'Brien

Well no surprises here then. The usual mockery of God, Jesus, and the Church. Funny how other minority religions are defended on here on a very regular basis. And outrage expressed if they're 'offended' in any way.

I don't think people care what religion it is, but when people come on and say the heart of a village is gone because a splinter is stolen, it's funny.

It's a piece of wood! Put that in your pipe and melt it!

    2 one-foot Crosses, One Silver, One Gold/Bronze.

Perhaps they'll be melted down and made into something moresignificantly artisticand historically valuable

How is it not significantly artistic?

It's 900+ years old... how could it not be Historically valuable?

So people mocking and scorning the reaction to a theft of a valueable cultural artifact is a product of "progressive" thinking.

It's not being an arsehole for the sake of getting at the Church, No?

Give me an example of how you were personally subjugated and dominated by the Church, just so I don't think your an arsehole...

    Yes, Seriously.

People in small communities don't generally like having their local treasures stolen.

    It really isn't funny.

It's a significant historical artifact and it has been stolen for the purposes of a few scumbags making a quick buck.

There is a joke in there, somewhere... I just know it.

Why do you think it funny that such a heinous theft be exploited and which will be condemned by many people. I fail to see any humour, on the contrary I would have sympathy for any victim of crime.

I was worried for a second there, I thought the holy stump had been robbed.

You wouldn't think it was quite so funny if it was an Islamic relic that was stolen.

Or you would but you wouldn't dare laugh because you know that Muslims, unlike Christians, are a violent, barbaric bunch who will come after you.

I'd imagine if this had happened 50 or 100 years ago it'd have been a national scandal. As it is probably the majority of people don't care or think it serious. It's about the equivalent of someone stealing an original R2D2 action figure from George Lucas's basement.

I suspect if R2D2 had been stolen, there would be significantly more pages of comments by now than the measly six that is up now.

If R2D2 was stolen we would know whether or not it was the real R2D2 prop. This is just a splinter that some bishops claim is a piece of a crucifix that one of the many messiahs of the time was crucified on.

But I would say that this is probably just a splinter.

A HEINOUS crime is something else in my books, rape, murder etc. THAT was the point of my post. Meh.

Highly unlikely that it does contain a piece of the Cross.

It is indisputable however, that it is 900+ years old, was made by the Master Craftsmen of the day and hence has been cherished and valued since.

It has an inherent value regardless of the Relic it supposedly contains.

Siding with Criminals generally makes you look like a knacker with a chip on your shoulder against every person or institution with power or money...

Maybe you're right and i am a knacker with a chip on my shoulder or maybe i just dont like the abuse some children suffered at the hands of priests and am happy to see someone get one over on them for a change . Wonder do many shoulder chipped knackers come on here to post .....

The "boys" who stole it stole it from the people of Holycross, Co Tipperary.

They have "got one over" on the people of Holycross, Co Tipperary.

It has a significant Cultural and Historical resonance for the people of the area and for Ireland in general.

Regardless of whether or not you like The Church (and clearly you don't!) it is a part of our history and artifacts like this are crucial for understanding and appreciating our rich cultural heritage.

It goes back centuries, Red Hugh O'Donnell and the lads stopped off to visit the Cross on the way to The Battle of Kinsale (didn't bring them any luck though!)

The place is even named after the items stolen... and all you can say is "fair play".

    Maybe I am right...
