Relic stolen

The theft of a relic from the cross on which Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified is being investigated in Co Tipperary.

Gardaí are investigating the theft of a relic from the cross on which Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified.
The relic was taken yesterday evening from Holy Cross Abbey near Thurles by thieves who cut through a steel door of a display cabinet.
Parish priest of Holy Cross Fr Tom Breen told RTÉ News the relic had been in the Abbey for almost 900 years.
Gardaí said two suspects, who had their faces covered, entered the Abbey at 5pm. They had a portable angle grinder, a hammer and a screwdriver with them.
The two left the area a few minutes later in a red 2006 Offaly or Limerick Volkswagen Touareg.
The car was found at Yellow Lough, Thurles. It had been set on fire. A dark-coloured car was seen leaving the area at high speed.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact Thurles Garda Station on 0504-25100.

The name of the abbey derives from a reputed portion of the True Cross preserved in a Gold Shrine set with precious stones. This had been presented by Pope Pascal II in 1110 to Donagh O'Brien, the grandson of Brian Boru. Such a sacred relic attracted multitudes of pilgrims, whose offerings enriched the Abbey immensely. Prior to the restoration of Holycross in 1975, the shrine was in the care of the Ursuline Convent, Blackrock, Cork.

So people mocking and scorning the reaction to a theft of a valueable cultural artifact is a product of "progressive" thinking.

But I would say that this is probably just a splinter.

Highly unlikely that it does contain a piece of the Cross.

It is indisputable however, that it is 900+ years old, was made by the Master Craftsmen of the day and hence has been cherished and valued since.

It has an inherent value regardless of the Relic it supposedly contains.

The "boys" who stole it stole it from the people of Holycross, Co Tipperary.

They have "got one over" on the people of Holycross, Co Tipperary.

It has a significant Cultural and Historical resonance for the people of the area and for Ireland in general.

Regardless of whether or not you like The Church (and clearly you don't!) it is a part of our history and artifacts like this are crucial for understanding and appreciating our rich cultural heritage.

It goes back centuries, Red Hugh O'Donnell and the lads stopped off to visit the Cross on the way to The Battle of Kinsale (didn't bring them any luck though!)

The place is even named after the items stolen... and all you can say is "fair play".
