I get annoyed at people who ignore the concept of Body Mass Index (BMI) just because it's not perfect. They treat it as a yes/no question, when it's not. The discussion goes something like this:

Person 1: I did the calculations on a website and my BMI is 26. Am I overweight?
Person 2: Since the BMI guidelines say >25 is overweight, then yes, you're a bit overweight. Nothing serious.
Person 3: Hang on. BMI does not account for different body types, so 26 is not automatically overweight.
Person 1: So, BMI is useless, then?
Person 3: Yes, it's useless, it's just designed to alarm you and make you buy slimming products.
Person 2: So what's your BMI, then?
    Person 3: Don't know. Don't care.
    Person 2: It's over 30, isn't it?
Person 3: BMI is useless, it doesn't tell you anything.
Person 2: Yes, there is a margin of error, but if your BMI is well over 30, the only question is just how obese you are!
    Person 1: I'm confused.
Person 2: BMI is just a rough guide to your healthy weight. A BMI of 26 is no cause for immediate panic. You can probably get your weight down a bit without going on a diet. But don't aim for a particular BMI such as 22 - that's not the point. The 20-25 you hear is a range of numbers with room for variation between different people.
Person 3: BMI is useless! It's not perfect!

I agree, it's not perfect but unless you are very short, very tall or very muscular it should be about right. I know of a very heavy guy who ignores it because 'sure the whole Irish rugby team would be overweight or obese with that thing'. The Irish rugby team is fit, healthy and muscular so it doesn't work for them but that doesn't mean it's sh1t.

I saw that too. Over 12k likes. Didn't read it properly.

    Here it is:

I've been thinking about this a bit - the way overweight female celebrities are seen as heroines or something while underweight ones get slagged off and demonised. It's just because the fat ones make fat women feel better about themselves. Not as much better as losing some weight would - but whatever.

Could be worse, they could be smokers.

If fat people didn't increase demands on the health system and the cost of running it (as a result of their associated health problems) I wouldn't care. But they do.

This is the most ridiculous argument you can have, in my opinion, as everyone places demands on the health system in some way. People that drive too fast and cause accidents, people that smoke, people that drink too much and end up in A and E, people that work too long in the office which causes stress and increases the risk of a whole range of diseases, I could go on.

Basically, everyone does things that are not ideal for their health or wellbeing, so why go on about one group of people that does this?

I understand that obesity is a problem and should be addressed, but I just don't buy into your argument that you wouldn't care if it wasn't for the health system.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?!'

I can see it now, after the Irish Slutwalk we will have the Irish Women Fatwalk, "we are not fat, we are extremely knowledgeable!", the placards will say.

Most ppl who are overweight have low self esteem issues and if they want to portray that their comfortable with that why not let as none of us are in their head and we don't know how they feel about it, we don't know anything that's going on with them wether their suffering from depression or if there's medical reasons behind it etc there's very few ppl with out a weakness wether it drinking smoking or eating and overeating can be classed as an eating disorder in some ppl would ye all be so hard on an anorexic, I'm not saying its ok to be overweight but its a persons choice as well and ppl shouldn't be so quick to presume a person is overweight cos their lazy and stuff their face!

    Most of them are.

It's not a coincidence you'll see more fat people in McDonalds than in a Gym.

How the hell can you tell yourself a question.
    You mean you ask yourself!
You "tell" yourself because you know its all a load of bollocks and you're just fat!

I like how on AH, its as if only women get fat.

I would hazard a guess that quite of few of the lads posting on this thread slagging off fat women are themselves overweight.

No, it's not slagging off women, before you fire off the auld gender bull****, it is people slagging the sheer denial of these idiots.

You aren't fat because you are whale with a social life, it is because you're eating too much, simple.

    That and its after hours.

Fair enough, the title of the thread refers to everyone though.

I still think though that a fair percentage the lads slagging off fat people in this thread are themselves overweight.

    Almost guaranteed.

50% of men are overweight and 20% are obese.

After a quick Google I'm ~7kg/m2 overweight (~2kg/m2 of that makes me obese).

    5'7" @ ~200lbs

Knew I was overweight, didn't realize I was obese.

    Yay for me :/

The text was taken from a woman's facebook account and mentioned women but the thread is about the changing attitude of being overweight in general, both genders.

I see plenty of overweight ppl in the gym I go to!

I'm currently losing weight as I was carrying too much belly for my liking. I'm a man, and I don't think it's only women who get fat.

I'm sure there's an equal proportion of fat men, and I also don't like the common male justifications for not trying to lose weight: ie, it's hard (I've lost about 10kg in two months without starving myself and have noticeable lost weight- for most people it's not that hard) or to joke about your beer belly as a defence mechanism, or that it's somehow not manly to lose weight.

    Bollocks.

Though I think perhaps men are less likely overall to post on facebook about how they're proud of being overweight, we have our own ways of not dealing with the problem.

I think most people posting here would be fine with someone who was overweight and accepted that.

It's the people who are in denial about it that are annoying.

I'm far from perfect but I don't pretend that I'm not or try to pretend that my faults are in fact virtues.

Curvy is a size 10 with decent tits, not some fat lump of a thing, because lots of lads are willing to ride and marry big birds, fat yokes reckon they are hot.

    I'm 16 stone btw.

And its great u have the Confidence to admit ur not perfect but most ppl don't so does that mean we should judge them even more? So what if they put up a front if it makes them feel better, their the ones that have to deal with it not us!

They can put up any front they want, but if they try and feed us BS lines about how fat = beautiful/good/whatever we're going to call them out on it.

Odd....because a couple of posts ago you were trying to make people posting in the thread feel bad about any flaws they might have.

    Back track much?
