People who are proud to be overweight and are happy to ignore all the health risks

I found this as a friend's facebook status today and it had lots of likes. I think that it's a dangerous road to go down as the health risks are being totally ignored. What do you think?

'A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and b...eautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

    Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?!'

I always fail to understand why people get so worked up about this. If somebody wants to be fat that's their choice/predicament (right or wrong) and the risks etc. lie with them. Why do others let it bother them.

Not saying that you do OP but you will see how angry some peoples responses are to this topic.

I hate crap like that, when people talk as if you have to be either obese or skinny, and not a normal weight inbetween, and use that as an excuse for their weight.

I've nothing against the overweight (I was technically overweight till recently), just the ones who try to deny it and make excuses for not trying to lose weight (which isn't that hard for most people).

If someone accepts they're overweight and acknowledges the health risks that's fine, I just hate it when people try to pretend that they want to be overweight and that it's somehow desirable.

I don't get angry about it but it isn't totally harmless to others. Smoking is much worse coz of the passive smoking aspect but.....
'If a friend of yours becomes obese, you have a nearly 60% higher chance of sliding into this category as well, according to the analysis. The finding has prompted researchers to call obesity a "socially contagious" disease in which a sense of what constitutes a normal body weight passes from one person to the next.'

I think that's because being fat makes you unhealthy. Although the fat person pays the ultimate price for that choice, the rest of us that make better choices subsidise the additional burden the fat person will place on society. In terms of arguments the parallels between smoking and being overweight cover a lot of the ground.

And yes I do think being fat is for most people a choice; maybe a default choice but a choice none the less.

This annoyed me when Beth Ditto posed naked on the cover of some music magazine cant remember which and loads of people were applauding her saying how great she was and how proud she was. I took one look at the photo and thought 'Obese'. Nothing to be proud of just as there is nothing to be proud of being super skinny.

Every time I see my curves in the mirror, my heart tells me: it has to beat faster every minute of every day to accomodate my extra weight, a weight which serves no physical purpose. That maybe if I actually lost a few kilos my heart would thank me immensely. It tells me that it's finite and doing overtime will make it 'retire' earlier than it has to.

I think what will generate a lot of anger in this case is the obvious delusion of the people who post something like that.

The simple fact is that if they genuinely had no issue with how they look they wouldn't post anything about it, let alone some piece of ****ing claptrap like that.

If people are fat then cool...I have no issue with it...I just hate this stupid justification of things.

When they die they'll be dead, so they'll be neither happy nor sad.

When they're dying they may fear death or be in pain so they may regret not being healthier or they'll accept that they're dying, acknowledge that it was ultimately going to happen anyway and will be happy they enjoyed their life.

We're all going to vanish into non-existence at one point, might as well make the most of what you got. If that means over eating and being fat so be it, just enjoy it.

I was looking at this really fat woman on the luas today, and I was pondering whether I could beat her up and I came to the conclusion that I couldn't. Thats the only advantage to being fat. You could punch the fcuk out of a fat person and maybe even knock them out, but when they come round again they probably won't feel much pain at all and are unlikely to have any broken teeth or broken bones. Their flab just tends to absorb the punches.

If fat people didn't increase demands on the health system and the cost of running it (as a result of their associated health problems) I wouldn't care. But they do.

Very annoying to get stuck behind one on a narrow path or have to sit beside one on a journey all the same.

I've the height of respect for fat people who are conscious of their size and try to lose weight, but the really fat people who blame everyone and everything but themselves and eat McDonalds for breakfast disgust me.

Any way, Most people who are over weight who might say, "oh im happy they way I am are the very ones yo yo dieting, with gym memeberships that never get used and a fridge full of crap.

But there are those that are quiet comfortable with the way they look and good for them.

This new ad campaign the obesity is a diese thats speading **** it to much.
There's plump, fat and then obsese. Just cause yoo.ve a bludge doesnt mean your obses as thei ad claims.

Do what you wanna do with your body, but **** up compalining and do something about it if your not happy with it.

The point of that ad is that all of the people featured were young and clinically overweight but people now have the view ah sure it's only a but of bulge and don't do anything about it and that can have a cumlative affect.

I get annoyed at people who ignore the concept of Body Mass Index (BMI) just because it's not perfect. They treat it as a yes/no question, when it's not. The discussion goes something like this:

Person 1: I did the calculations on a website and my BMI is 26. Am I overweight?
Person 2: Since the BMI guidelines say >25 is overweight, then yes, you're a bit overweight. Nothing serious.
Person 3: Hang on. BMI does not account for different body types, so 26 is not automatically overweight.
Person 1: So, BMI is useless, then?
Person 3: Yes, it's useless, it's just designed to alarm you and make you buy slimming products.
Person 2: So what's your BMI, then?
    Person 3: Don't know. Don't care.
    Person 2: It's over 30, isn't it?
Person 3: BMI is useless, it doesn't tell you anything.
Person 2: Yes, there is a margin of error, but if your BMI is well over 30, the only question is just how obese you are!
    Person 1: I'm confused.
Person 2: BMI is just a rough guide to your healthy weight. A BMI of 26 is no cause for immediate panic. You can probably get your weight down a bit without going on a diet. But don't aim for a particular BMI such as 22 - that's not the point. The 20-25 you hear is a range of numbers with room for variation between different people.
Person 3: BMI is useless! It's not perfect!

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    In fairness, BMI is pointless.

I have a simple method....look in the mirror. Are you fat?

    Done.

I agree, it's not perfect but unless you are very short, very tall or very muscular it should be about right. I know of a very heavy guy who ignores it because 'sure the whole Irish rugby team would be overweight or obese with that thing'. The Irish rugby team is fit, healthy and muscular so it doesn't work for them but that doesn't mean it's sh1t.

I've been thinking about this a bit - the way overweight female celebrities are seen as heroines or something while underweight ones get slagged off and demonised. It's just because the fat ones make fat women feel better about themselves. Not as much better as losing some weight would - but whatever.

This is the most ridiculous argument you can have, in my opinion, as everyone places demands on the health system in some way. People that drive too fast and cause accidents, people that smoke, people that drink too much and end up in A and E, people that work too long in the office which causes stress and increases the risk of a whole range of diseases, I could go on.

Basically, everyone does things that are not ideal for their health or wellbeing, so why go on about one group of people that does this?

I understand that obesity is a problem and should be addressed, but I just don't buy into your argument that you wouldn't care if it wasn't for the health system.

Most ppl who are overweight have low self esteem issues and if they want to portray that their comfortable with that why not let as none of us are in their head and we don't know how they feel about it, we don't know anything that's going on with them wether their suffering from depression or if there's medical reasons behind it etc there's very few ppl with out a weakness wether it drinking smoking or eating and overeating can be classed as an eating disorder in some ppl would ye all be so hard on an anorexic, I'm not saying its ok to be overweight but its a persons choice as well and ppl shouldn't be so quick to presume a person is overweight cos their lazy and stuff their face!

No, it's not slagging off women, before you fire off the auld gender bull****, it is people slagging the sheer denial of these idiots.

You aren't fat because you are whale with a social life, it is because you're eating too much, simple.

    Almost guaranteed.

50% of men are overweight and 20% are obese.

After a quick Google I'm ~7kg/m2 overweight (~2kg/m2 of that makes me obese).

    5'7" @ ~200lbs

Knew I was overweight, didn't realize I was obese.

    Yay for me :/

The text was taken from a woman's facebook account and mentioned women but the thread is about the changing attitude of being overweight in general, both genders.
