I am of the opinion that we asked the Shinner's to decommision their weapons and engage in the political process...they did, are we moving the goalposts now??? You can be Councillor's and maybe, at a stretch T.D's but go no further.......nonsense. MMcG is as entitled to run as any other.....PK is the worst of what FG has to offer and his ill-conceived comments are nothing new to those who know him:eek:

It is worth noting that as well Haughey's comments on Bertie...once when asked, who of the young politicians caught his eye...Kehoe was the chosen one :eek::eek:

Jay Leno has it on his programme tonight, that a major dutch/irish criminal is funding the presidential campaign of his cousin in the race to win the irish presidency. This show is seen by millions and millions worldwide. Why is the person mentioned not denying this? Surely all the american companies will pull out of Ireland if they think this is true. Worrying times ahead.

First of all, there is no such thing as libel any more. It is defamation.

Secondly, the quote in the OP merely had him asking a question and didn't refer to McGuinness at all.

Finally, a statement is only defamatory if it is untrue. And, unlike a criminal case, in civil court truth is decided on the balance of probabilities as opposed to beyond a reasonable doubt so it is much easier to defend a statement.

Libel is written defamation. Slander is verbal defamation.

I wasnt responding to the OP point. It was someone else'.

Besides isnt a comment presumed defamatory until proven otherwise. This is where defamation differs from other torts. The defence of justification requires a defendant to prove the truth of a statement

I thought in a libel or slander case that the person libelled/slandered has to prove that what was said isn't true ???

'Bitterer' than the proverbial lemon, by all accounts.

Perhaps youre correct but shouldn't the onus be on the publisher to get their facts straight before publishing something which could prove defamatory. This is what precludes a lot of journalists from publishing stories they know or believe to be true without the requisite proof.

Libel and slander were both combined, now there is simply "defamation"

If you say something dodge about someone and they sue for defamation you have to be able to prove it is true in court.

    Comparing McGuinness to Mandella!! lol!!

    See this? Typical!

Maybe you should look up Mandela's history, and i'm not being critical of him.

I respect those two men alot, me and you have been lucky to not grow up in their circumstances. Even Ian Paisley can get on with McGuiness! The history of Northern Ireland on boards is: Everyone was great and had a lovely time until the bold IRA came around for no reason and started eating babies.

Thankfully, most Irish people don't think like most people here (opinionated bores, me included)

There are a lot more people who could do with being sacked ahead of Paul Kehoe

    Snap with Gay Mitchell.
    An extremely unpleasant individual.

+1. Most people in the south just dont have a fcukin clue what went on up north. And its not some distant past. Right up until the early to mid 90s.

Paul Kehoe is a great man for comment on other people's money management alright. Got top of the class in a report going back a few years. Here is the extract

"For example, according to our figures, Fine Gael's Paul Kehoe who was the highest expenses claimant in the country during the 12-month period between Dec '06-Dec 2007 claimed over €56,800 in travel alone."

If you can stomach the full article here's the link:

I don't view this in isolation. FG have taken the high level decision to engage in a nasty campaign against McGuinness.

First with Alan Shatter's comments then mitchell and now this. They are desperate and using underhand means to go about something in a way that they can then deny it. It's pretty dissappointing & hypocritical to see imo.

Is there any truth in the rumour doing the rounds, that a Dutch based criminal cousin of Mitchell, is funding his presidential campaign bid? If american buisness's hear of this, they'll run a mile. I think Gay Mitchell will have to publicly come out and deny this and also prove it. The public deserves to know the truth.

I can't imagine it being true. I'd be surprised if it was. I'm NO fan of Gay Mitchell, but I can't imagine a criminal at the dizzying heights (or scuzzy lows depending on how you look at it) of a career criminal like George Mitchell (AKA The Penguin), would like to have a cousin being famous as a head of state, would only draw more spotlights into his "business" activities!

I've only just seen they are cousins... this election gets more like something out of Batman everyday.

I would very much doubt Gay Mitchell would accept monies from anyone, relative or no, engaged in criminal activity. I was once the recipient of a Luxury Christmas Hamper that he and his family received from an unknown (to me) source who he did not wish to insult nor did he wish to accept. At the time I was a constituent, Lone Parent with kids and very unwell. I was asked to sign a receipt to say I had received the Hamper, for their records, I presume to prove that he had not accepted the item himself

I was no special friend nor was I ever made to feel I owed anything in return.....say what you like but I do not and never will doubt his integrity!! Having said that, he won't be getting my No.1......a little too Right Wing for me.

You couldn't make it up, cos you'd just not be that imaginative.

I can't understand why the election for what is primarily a ceremonial position is always so dirty. They always are!

Leno's show runs Mon-Fri. NOT sunday as you claim.
If you are going to choose a fictitious source ahead of time, you need to try harder.

I thought you said yesterday that Jay Leno was having it on his show??

Do you have a valid source for these rumours? Otherwise some might think that you are the source of the rumours.
