There's a pay as you please restaurant in Killarney. I wonder if it could be maintained in Ireland or would people pull the piss?
Do you think that most people pay a fair price?

Irish people would completely take the piss on this one. There was a tv cookery competition on the BBC/ITV a few years ago where customers could pay what they wanted, they paid feck all for the food and looked for any excuse not to pay.

    Might work

I thought the Dublin bike scheme would be over in a week and the bikes would be stolen and in canals
    Didn't happen at all

Maybe Irish people would not take advantage and this could be a success

    It's never gonna work.

I heard about this being done in dublin and the result was that people ended up paying more than it was worth

Nope, no connection and the blog entry that I used complained about the coffee so not exactly a perfectly pitched ad.;)

Sounds delish, I'd be a little freaked all through my meal trying to guess what they think it's worth... To avoid any Ricky Gervais moments I'd probably end up over paying. I think they know a lot of people will do that. I think the amount of piss takers might be less than you'd imagine

Am I imagining it, or has this place been going for a while and already doing well?

On another note, even if the food was free, I wouldn't go to Killarney.

I think it's a lovely, positive way to appeal to people's better nature. Sometimes it's the unwritten rules that are respected more and people often respond surprisingly well when they have nothing to rebel against. I'd love to see this gesture for promoting honesty and integrity doing really well.

    Sound OP :)

Is there a minimum payment or would you be within your rights to pay 2 cent for a steak sandwich?

And do you have to pay before you get the food?

It simply wouldnt work. We're one of the most dishonest races on Earth.

You pay at the end so that you can judge the amount by the quality of the meal and service. It's been going for a while, popular with American tourists apparently but I haven't been myself.

this has been around for a while now, and AFAIK it works. apprently people arent evil and do pay for food.

American tourists would have a completely different outlook to your average Irish gombeen in fairness.Especially a gombeen after "a few Bulmers".

I really don't think you should be making sweeping statements in absolute terms unless you have something concrete to back it up. Which you don't so stop being silly

    Definitely an interesting idea.

Hope it goes well, I suspect it'll slowly leak money though.

I'd imagine there'd be some balancing out in terms of

People who will never pay no matter what

    vs

People who pay more than it's really worth but are judging based on how much other restraunts charge.

Greed. Dishonesty.Whatever you want to call it.I think the "Celtic Tiger" should be enough to back that bit up. You think that opening up restaurants where you can pay "whatever you like" would work in Ireland? Have you ever been out on a Saturday night in any town in the country. Drunken, incoherent gombeens everywhere. A few pints and a free meal in one of these restaurants.Thats what would happen. A gombeens idea of heaven.

Would just prefer prices on the menu, makes it easier!

Sorry OP but the original OP sounded much too shilly.
You're probably not connected to the place, hope it's ok I removed certain info.

On topic, I've been to several Hare Krishna and Christian restaurants around the world that work on pay as you please basis and must say I always paid as much as I would in a similar regular place. Food usually quite nice.

The Celtic Tiger is hardly proof that Irish people are dishonest. A bit silly with credit perhaps, but that hardly makes us dishonest.

Not does the fact that some - and I emphasise the some - people get hammered on a Saturday night prove that either.

The majority of people I've met in this country have been honest, hardworking people & sound.

I think this restaurant has a very good unique selling point & I hope the owners succeed. If for nothing more than to prove how wrong your twisted view on Irish society actually is.

It's been open at least 6 months now, so it has to be making some money. You pay by putting your money into a box so nobody knows how much you have paid. Takes the embarrasment factor away. I know a few people who have eaten there, and after asking what they had and what they paid, i thought they paid too much.

It would be far to much of a risk to take, Restaurants cost huge money to run in Dublin between rates, rents, insurance etc etc etc etc etc, even if 50% where honest enough to play fairly the other potential 50% would have you ou of business within a month. nice idea though
