Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. I was lucky enough to get a job last week. All I will say is that you will need a thick skin, for the one job i got a reply i literally got 40 CVs sitting in rot. What probably helped me was attaching a reference to my CV in he envelope from a previous workplace so that they see (whether they want to read it or not) that you are trustworthy , hardworking etc.
Go in and ask for the manager, dont say what it is in relation to as the staff will usually fob you off saying he isnt in. So go in ask for the ,manager, shake hands and say you are looking for a job, you will get a lot of rejections, but keep looking, jobs are there, just keep looking

There's a few restaurants looking for people - think Kelly's might be one!

Check the Galway Advertiser classfields under situations vacant, there were a few jobs going suitable for students in the last issue. Go around to the big supermarkets too, there always good for a job.

Theres a lot of students leaving jobs now after the summer so its a good time to check it out. In saying that however there will also be a lot of students looking for jobs too. Just carpet bomb everywhere with cvs. We've all been there and its quite demoralising but in this climate its the only decent way of securing something. I recommend you register with some recruitment agencies too. There seems to be a few shops in town with signs in the window the last week or so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭ourtrail

Eddie Rockets on Eglinton Street and Subway in the Eyre Square Shopping Centre both have signs in the window looking for staff.

Dominoes in westside had an ad for staff in their window at weekend.
Also the French bakery/cafe on Mainguard St had an ad up last week

I know people are sick to death with post asking for jobs available but im gonna have to add to that pile! Would anyone know of anywhere going part-time for a student? Just lost my job back home after 5 years working their and need a job to get me through this year in college. I have left CV's into CP's, Carbon, Argos and the Salthill Hotel as I have previous bar experience.
Any other places people have seen that are looking for staff??:D:D

Hi, I'm a first year in NUIG and does anybody know any ways of making money? Like seeing vacancies, advertisements, or other ways of making money( eg: Handing out flyers, promoting products, etc.). I actually have no job experience so it makes looking for a job a littlebit difficult.

if you are 18 yo, include on a cv that you will work for the actual minimum wage €6.92 (not €8.65)

    http://www.jobsguideireland.com/minimum-wage-rate-in-ireland/

at the very least it will get your cv noticed which can be the most important thing

I think Argos are hiring for christmas staff. Not sure when they start though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

no work experience? what were you doing till now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭Asmodean

Gonna be tough without any experience to be honest. Just carpet bomb town with your cvs. The cinemas can hire from time to time too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 235 ✭✭Tym

Yeah, I was thinking of volunterring for a couple of things, so at least i'd have something to put down as a reference.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

Do volunteer if you don't have much work experience. It looks great on the CV and a lot of businesses have charity connections.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 146 ✭✭PennyLane88

No work experience at 18?? Might be harder to find work with no work experience, especially with so many out of work.

    Probably your best bet.

I got a retail job during the summer without any experience. But I had loads of volunteer experience!

    @Carolanne..
Yeah, but like if they don't it'd be kind of awkward. I guess i'll just ask them then give them my timetable another time, lol.

The likes of Smyths, Tesco & Argos will all be taking on staff from now to Christmas. Not ideal if you are looking for something more permanent but it'd be better than nothing.

People have been saying to me for ages " Oh it's so hard to get a job in Galway these days and I really need work "..
I always ask " Did you try here? " They say no, I ask about a different place, they say no .. and it goes on and on.

There are LOADS of jobs in Galway.

Imagine you have no food to put on the table or you owe the bank thousands of euro, and all you have is a full day and 50 cvs and your clean smart clothes on - if you want a job you'll get a job.

I never went to college but I've never been stuck for work. It doesn't really matter if you are working in 'paddys shop' or digging a hole, the basic wage is still the same. Get that wage and if you aren't happy with it then look for something better on your day off.

Gave my brother and sister the same kick up the arse about a month ago when they were 'looking really hard for work'. Now she is working in a bar getting 30 hours a week while doing college and he got a job helping delivier bread at the weekend while he does college during the week. if you haven't tried 50+ places in a day ( which is loads of time ) then you are the only one stopping yourself from getting work.

Best of luck, hope you get sorted.

Pretty much this. I haven't had trouble getting work although I haven't sent out 50 CV's either but I did look around and applied in the right places.

There are LOADS of jobs in Galway.
Yeah Vega, there are if you are prepared to work for low pay and unsocial hours with nil job security. Great for single people, students etc. Not so great when you have a family and committments. Try finding a childminder to cover you for a 12 hour day or for the evening or weekend shifts? Try and find the money to pay for it?

It's also great when you're young, hit about 35 and you'll find you're too old for low paid service jobs.

For the younger age group mentioned you are right. There is very little excuse for not finding some work to keep you going until the dream job comes up.

Yup I hear ya. The thread was part time job not part time career so just wanted to make a reply that address that in the reply. But I agree none the less :)

That'd be perfect. I'd have a reference to put on my CV and, maybe, they'd accept me back for summer. The only problem is, wouldn't they get the people who worked during the summer to work for the christmas period?

Oh btw thank Vega for the motivational speechXD

Some staff will stay on but smyths opens til 11pm for 7 weeks so they will be taking people on to cover those hours.

    Hi there,

Does anyone know about a pub/restaurant/company ect. that would hire foreign students for the summer? I've read all of your messages, but those were mostly about part time jobs!

I will send my CV to any place I can find, but still I could use some advice, if you have any to give me! If you've heard about someone that would be ready to hire a french student who can speak 4 languages, and with good work experience (I've worked in banks, tourist information office, for a caterer...), feel free to let me know, it would really help me!

Go raibh maith agat! (I hope that makes sense, I found it online. Anyway, thanks! :) )

    Hi all,

I know I'm part of the majority here but worth a try anyhow. Can anyone tell me if any factories in Galway are hiring at the moment and is it worthwhile handing cv's into them? I'm a student at the moment and on the verge of droping out so actually would take any job at the moment. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

    Hi all,
Looking for a person to record and edit a professional video for a introduction to a new website launching in the new year.
Anyone I have talked to is charging 800-1500 so I'm looking for someone much cheaper as that's just not in my budget.
Any ideas please suggest or pm me!
    Cheers

Are you looking for a straightforward interview type shoot, or flashy intros/angles and whatnot?

Can you be a bit more specific as to the scenes you might be interested in, you can get interviews done for around a couple hundred, maybe there's a good reason you're getting 5-7 times as much on the quotes? More info please!

I referred a friend to these guys for a job and it worked out well. I know the price was much lower than the €800 bracket.
You can pm if you want to see the video they did for my friend

From the sounds of it you might be best off to get a flash designer to do up a nice intro for a couple of hundred, and slip another fifty to the lads and lassies in Galway Bay FM to do a voiceover intro with music. Just as good as a video and in ways more versatile.

You should contact Film Soc in NUIG. They have a group that make quite good promos. http://www.youtube.com/user/STVGalway :)

    Hi folks,

A Galway based commercial company are looking for a photoshop genius to help ease their photo-editing workflow. This isn't a one off job, they're looking for someone who can take over an entire photo editing section in time.

I do a lot of work for these guys in terms of camera work/video editing, so if you or someone you know would be interested in this job, please PM me.

Unless you have a pal in there who would do a nixer, that's far from the going rate for VO and production.

I hope to set up an electronic repair service as an off-shoot to an existing business I have in Galway City and recognise the need for a capable business partner whose skill set and knowledge of electronics match and preferrably exceed my own.

Ideally I'm looking for someone with qualifications and experience with repair and servicing of the following:
-Musical equipment (Amps, P.A. systems, Instruments)
    -Personal Computers and Laptops
    -Consumer electronics (Tv, Hi-Fi, ipod)
    -Mobile phones

Some prior knowledge of business and customer relations is preferable but not a necessity.

There will be low financial but high time investment required for the start-up.
I am not looking to employ anybody as I want to work with somebody that recognises that their input will directly effect the financial output.

Not sure if this is the best place to look but I know there are a lot of talented people knocking around Galway and I'm not sure an ad in the back of the Advertiser would get the right results ;)

If you are interested, PM me and tell me what you can do.

Massimos are looking for an experienced Bar man. Your timing kind of sucks. I'll get Lampooned for this but this X-mas was one of the busiest x-mas seasons in terms of x-mas job oppurtunities in my opinion. Not sure it will reflect in the unemployment figures though as most places seem to be offering a contract with 4 hours a week and hiring lots of people, then using discression to give certain people more hours than others.

I am looking for 10 people to participate in a usability test of a web site. It will take you less than 2 hours and we will pay you €50 for your time. The web site is related to postgrad education, so the testers I'm looking for must fall into one of the following categories:

    Mature applicants (x2) [age 30+]
    Undergraduates (x3)
    Graduates (x3)
    International students (x2)

The test will consist of a few minutes' briefing, after which you'll sit at a laptop (we'll provide it) and do some tasks such as browse the website, create an account, submit an application, and make a payment. We'll ask you to fill in a questionnaire afterwards and come back at the end of the day for a short group discussion.

We'll record your actions using screen-recording software. This will help us analyze and collate the findings later. Remember, it's the website we want to test, not you. For authenticity, we'd like you to use your real details. There are no intrusive questions and we'll delete the data afterwards, but you can use false data if you like, as long as it's realistic. We'll provide you with a dummy credit card for the payment part.

We are planning to run the tests next Tuesday and Wednesday, December 20 and 21, in Galway city centre. If you are interested, please send me a PM with a contact number and email address, which of the above categories you belong to, and some basic details about yourself. Please tell us which of the two dates you would prefer and we'll try, but can't promise, to accommodate you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Frank Henry.
