Also, is Martin Vagner being played by the same guy as in the swedish movie????
No, Stellan Skarsgard is playing him in Fincher's version.

Jaysus, I thought that was a shockingly bad trailer. It almost looks like a boring film that they're trying to make look exciting. If I didn't know the source material, I'd have no interest in seeing the movie after only looking at the trailer.

It does capture the Fincher aesthetic rather well, I think, but otherwise it doesn't give much away. In a way, it's nice to see that in an era when trailers are often closer to recaps than anything else, but it's a little bare. Maybe they figure the Swedish films acted as trailers in the traditional sense. Has this had a teaser previously? It is supposed to be an actual trailer, right?

I thought it was very much a teaser. There's lots of glimpses of characters and important plot points for those familiar with the book, but not giving anything major away for either fans or newcomers (I can't imagine someone unfamiliar with the book could pick anything out of that!) - hell, we don't get a decent look at Mara at all!

Film isn't released until December - there'll surely be a marketing blitz closer to the time. But this is an energetic, well made teaser - and, like the Social Network trailer, it's a trailer that gets me interested in a film I was previously quite cynical about :)

I do tend to like trailers that don't feature a word of dialogue though!

Official "green-band" trailer is now out. It's much the same, minus the nudity. Can't embed it as Sony are pulling everything, including the previous bootleg which it seems was a genuine leak.

UK and French posters have been spotted as well. They are slightly NSFW, so I'll just link to them below. Fincher wasn't joking about wanting Mara naked on the poster.

It really is a massive transformation from her down to earth good looks to terrifying Lisbeth Salender! Good to see them pushing the boat out a bit with controversial marketing. Books don't really tone back the explicit content, hopefully the film will be full-on too (personally didn't find the Swedish films all that shocking)!

That was what I did not like about the original films, and IMO the main reason why a remake is acceptable, if not even needed.

Books, are, quite a cold format. It is just text, and so it is down to the material to excite or shock you, which the book of Dragon does exceedingly well. The swedish film, despite having visuals and sound to excite or shock the viewer did not do much of either. I admit I got goose bumps when it turned out that
    Harriet Vanger was alive
. But that was more the story than how it was depicted all the
sexual abuse and revelations of incest etc
all were a bit meh, where as in the book they were graphic and shocking. Hopefully the new film will push the boat out, when it comes to visuals. The book was an adult book, I see no reason to tone it down, just to put it on film.

I can't see this film being anything less than a resounding success. Look at what we have going into it. Very strong cast (imo), outstanding director, score could be something special based on the trailer, and did I mention the director? I have nothing but faith in Fincher - Seven was fantastic, and a similar tone would suit this book well imo.

The fact that a Swedish language version of the film exists is a moot point (really enjoyed that film btw). To draw a parallel, the author of 'Let the Right One In' (screenwriter for the original Swedish flick) said he was really happy with 'Let me in', that it was nice to see another interpretation of his work. Why can't we be happy that we're getting another interpretation (and if the ending has changed, that's what it is, not a remake) of TGwtDT?

Craig's latest comments have me very excited:
“It’s as adult as you can possibly make it. This is adult drama. I grew up, as we ****ing all did, watching The Godfather and that, movies that were made for adults. And this is a $100 million R-rated movie. Nobody makes those anymore. And Fincher, he’s not holding back. They’ve given him free rein. He showed me some scenes recently, and my hand was over my mouth, going, ‘Are you ****ing serious?’”

And why did Craig find those scenes so shocking?

“[It's] not that he simply showed me footage that was horribly graphic. It was stuff that was happening, or had happened. And somehow you don’t see it… There’s more than one way to sense violence. Much more powerful ways than seeing it step-by-step.”

Although I'd interested to know if Craig has seen the original film.

Just saw the swedish version last week, I really liked it but felt it could have been better somehow, so I'm pretty excited to see what Fincher can do with this. THought the trailer looked great and super stylish too.

I've not read the books, is there much more in the books that the original movie didn't draw on?

Was this already posted? Dig the Zeppelin cover I have to say.....

More so with the two later films. The first has the basic story pretty much intact, although the investigative journalism (a driving force of all the books) is pretty harshly edited to within an inch of its life.

As the books become denser - Dragon Tattoo is by far the most easily adaptable of the series - the films become a bit more cutthroat. The second shoots for a straight adaptation and fails by making a very messy film - there's characters who have their roles cut down, but TBH no big loss. The third is much more cutthroat - significant subplots are entirely absent. It makes for a film with less character than the source material, but honestly it's a better movie for it. Still, none of the Swedish films are anything more than servicable - the second is fairly awful. But then again the first is the only great book of the bunch. Second two could have used much tighter editing, and less giants (that's not a typo).

The thing about the films for me is, I loved the books, and I really enjoyed the First movie, but every time I sit down to watch the second movie, I turn it off after about 30 minutes. It just seems so ... i dont know, boring and chaotic at the same time. Is that even possible?

I cant wait to see Finchers version. The Swedish version should have had a much larger budget.

Were'nt all three swedish movies re-edit's of a 6 episode tv mini series?

I didn't find the 2nd film too bad, was a little bit all over the place compared to the first one but sill found it enjoyable, maybe because I haven't read the book.

Other way around actually! TV series came after.

    New trailer:

It's very long and revealing. Anyone who hasn't read the book or watched the Swedish version should probably steer clear.

I've read all of the books and I think this one looks a lot closer in tone (than the Swedish TV version) to the books - trailer is far too long but looks promising!

    Four minutes long

I've seen the films and read the books, but even that's way too much content for a trailer. I shall promptly ignore it.

Way to undo all the goodwill of your brilliant earlier tease, marketing team :(

I'm confused - given how ludicrously popular that trilogy of novels has become, why on earth do the studio feel a 4-minute trailer is required? Everybody knows the books, so you'd think knowing that the first trailer would have been all that was required.

That trailer makes the movie look really boring. Which it probably will be tbh. Real Da Vinci Code vibe off it

I know some people will probably take issue with it, but I'm pleased that all of the characters (with the exception of Craig) are speaking with Swedish-sounding accents. I had this terrible fear that the actors would speak with their natural American accents. Although I'm still not entirely sold on Fincher's decision to retain the Swedish setting. I see no reason why he couldn't have shifted the story to the US or Canada or something. But he seemed to think it was important to keep it in Sweden.

He probably wanted it be based there due to the
    nazi undertone
    in the book.

all though it may have worked elsewhere i am glad its setting is the same as the books

It looks a scene for scene remake of the original.
I thought Hollywood my shy away from the
    oral rape
    scene but obviously not.

Maybe to show the fans of the book how faithful they are trying to be to the source material?

But is she not a complete outsider in the books? both in looks and social interaction? If so, then this weird look for her fits with the character.

Well she is a social outsider in that she distrusts men, particularly men in authority, and authority in general and she does dress uniquely. But she also has no difficulty going to a nite club and getting layed, or meeting other hackers and working with them. Hardly socially incompetent.

Just from looking at her in the trailer she looks peculiar. Her face is weird, and her eyes are kinda of freaky looking.

This is lisbeth from the swedish movie:

And this is her from the new one(I couldnt really find a picture demonstrating what I meant tbh):

Tbh, that would take from the shock factor of it all, wouldnt it?

By all accounts, Fincher is going much further than the Swedish adaptation did. The studio gave him free reign. This is the guy who made Se7en, so I don't think we need to worry about him shying away from anything.

    From the trailer:

She looks more like Edward Scissorhands lovechild.
Unlike the original Lisbeth, if I was Mikael Blomkvist, I would kick that out of my bed.
