This is from Lynne Truss' lovely "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" book:

    Dear Jack,
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, and thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy - will you let me be yours?
    Jill

    Yours,

Might as well get this thread up and running again, eh fellas?

I'm in 4th year now, and it would be nice if for once I had been fully registered, on blackboard, and aware of what textbooks I need before the semester had started.

    Nope.

When I sign on to CASS it says something along the lines of "Who the hell are you? What the hell do YOU want?"

Any suggestions? Probably not, but I still need to bitch about it.

Head into the registration helpdesk in Aras Ui Cathail. They'll be able to sort it out for ya.

Well, I repeated an exam. The result was made available yesterday. Because of this, for some reason, it will be 13 days before I can register. And then another two days before Blackboard will be available. What exactly are they doing that takes 2 weeks?

    >Email fees office telling them you require the bank details to facilitate a transfer, as you will not be paying via Visa or giro

    >Receive reply days later telling you how you can pay via Visa or giro

    >Follow up email repeating that I need the bank details for a transfer are ignored

And these are the useless cúnts who try and scam more money off you if you don't pay in time.

I've also noticed that one particular individual in the Fees Office seems to take their annual leave at around this time every year. Staff in the fees office taking leave at the one part of the year they're needed? Really?

Well there must be someone smart there after all...

Being charged an extra €500 to register even though I'm not the first child in my family to go to University. Have to claim it back as tax or some nonsense.

They're hoping people won't be bothered enough to claim it back. Lovely.

Oh, is that what you have to do? I was trying to figure it out, decided just not to bother paying yet :P God thats awkward...

As far as im aware thats a government policy thing. A mate in UCC had the same thing happen. not exactly nuig's fault

These lads in the Fees office are exasperating. For two weeks now I've been emailing them asking for the bank transfer details as I will be paying with a UK account, as I have done for the previous 3 years. Every time I get the same smart arse copy & pasted reply telling me I can pay by bank giro (in response to me telling them I can't). Now they're telling me that only non-EU students can pay by bank transfer. Why does absolutely every correspondence with practically every department have to be such an obstacle course?

Why did windows 7 have to be installed on the computers? It now takes twice as long to log in, and everything to load...bring back XP!

XP is ailing and coming close to end-of-life for support. It's well time to migrate. They're investing the slow login-issue. Running W7 on older hardware doesn't help but that situation will improve as the equipment is eventually replaced.

Be thankful they jumped straight to Windows 7 and avoided Vista! But I didn't find the computers slow boot up, definitely no slower than before.

How the fu'ck am I suppose to know if the workshops are on or not when non of the lecturers say :/

    You could ask them?
Failing that, it's probably safe to assume that they're not on yet if you've not only been told about them.

I could be completely wrong but I thought I heard last year that the parking fee was a one off and I wouldn't have to pay it again. Anyway i'm annoyed at having to pay another 45euro when there isn't even parking available most of the time.

Yeah, it sucks I know! The annoying thing is as you say, that youre not even guaranteed to get a parking space. Its like going to the cinema and buying a ticket for the show, and the guy at the box office says "Thats 7 euro please, but just to let you know there might not be room for you, but you still have to pay". BLOODY RIDICULOUS!

I guess the various student contact departments deal with 1000 retarded phone calls a day.

But still, every time I call (actually just the times they answer) I seem to get some rude inept prick whose job seems to be to send me in circles.

€45 isn't that much for a whole year tbf, and besides a massive amount of the people who drive into college are just lazy shítes who could easily walk. Not saying that applies to you, but it does apply to a lot of people in this country!

Is it just me or is anyone else having problems with the new "improved" photocopiers in the library. I asked a member of staff to help me today and she didnt have a clue either. I followed the instructions on the wall to the letter and still no luck. Typical.

I wouldn't mind the price if parking spaces were available but after 9 its impossible to get one and it would take me a few hours to walk to college in the morning.

Well, the Park and Ride in Dangan is never full. The shuttle bus that runs between there and the main campus is the reason you have to pay a fee at all. If you can't park on the main campus, go to Dangan.

Support contract for Windows XP is almost up. Simple as.

    Totally agree with this.

Completely takes all the stress out of finding parking and the buses run regularly and on time.

All the people ranting about on-campus parking need to sort themselves out and use the park and ride.;)

That ****ing French department. I'm doing a MA with them, and I have a test, worth 25% of my mark, first thing the morning after my Graduation. All through my years of BA French, they planted tests and essay submissions the day after balls, Paddy's Day, during RAG week, and now, they ruin my graduation. I am devastated. BASTARDS!!!!!!

That is especially nasty. If I were you, I'd give out ****e to whomever timetables these things. It's simply not on.

Edit: The grads aren't until the end of October, right? Why not tell them in advance about the situation and ask them to reschedule it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭The Cool

Hmmm, I don't know if they can do anything for me though, that's the thing. I only have French language on a Wednesday morning, I don't know when they'd reschedule it to be honest. Awk, it's just crap! I'm going to talk to a different lecturer friend tomorrow and see what he thinks. I'm so cross!!! Not fair!!

In fairness, I doubt they even thought of the grad when they were scheduling it, but it is a PITA. Are there any others who will be affected?

Certainly flagging it up as early as possible would be the way to go.

My advice: Skip the graduation - it's a tedious pile of ****. Skip going out getting pissed off your tits. Do some study, do well in your masters, which the ****ing French department has you doing, and you can do all the graduation crap next year when you have a Master's which one could argue actually means something, unlike the degree which they'd give to just about anyone who wandered in off the street.
