I remember going to buy a NGPC in Smyth's back in the day, and staying off, as they'd stock two behind the counter and not bothered to have any games. Shame, in retrospect.

I remember HMV on Henry Street promoting it heavily. I didn't buy it though or when it was discounted because I saw there was an emulator. Silly me! The emulator was and still is rubbish. I'm sure youtube videos of the games on the emulator with the awful sound emulation and running at close to half speed has put a lot of people off the machine.

Yep! I remember that! When you went downstairs they had a whole NGP section at the end of the shelves on the left. It was the only place I remember seeing it in Dublin. They had an absolute load of games.

I was considering buying one but just didn't really know enough about it.

    That's where I bought mine!
    Downstairs in HMV, how weird!
A cracking system to be sure.
I suppose for completeness one should really get the NGP, sans colour.

They used to have a pocket colour stand in Tower Records in Wicklow St. Not sure exactly how long they kept it set up for.

It's definitely a machine worth collecting for. It might have been a failure but the quality of the games on the system is surprising. I only got into the system recently after getting a very cheap NGPC from ebay. The system can be gotten for very cheap and the games even cheaper. Unboxed the games are dirt cheap with some ebay sellers doing some excellent bundles. Even the rarer games like Faselei etc. have high buy it now prices but it's worth waiting until one comes up for auction since it seems that nobody is really bidding on them so they can usually go for the reserve price.

Other than the screen being the same crappy reflective TFT screen the original GBA uses, it's a great system. It's got far more grunt than the Gameboy colour since it's true 16-bit and yet has 5 times the battery life with 40 hours out of 2 AA's. The controls are fantastic with the mini microswitch joystick being sublime.

As for the games, there's a small library but at the time SNK was one of the best developers around so the quantity to quality ratio is better than most systems. SNK's beat'em ups are absolutely superb on the system. The quality of the fighting games will surprise you and differ from the games they are based on and offer good single player modes. There's some original fighters as well like Gals Fighters. Other than the beat'em ups you have some great puzzle games with magical drop, puzzle bobble, puzzle link etc. There's also a decent Sonic game and osme great RPG's in Faselei!, Biomotor Unitron, Card Fighters etc. There's some other great games on there as well. With such a small release list and the cheap games it's very easy to pick up every good game on the system.

I took the bus to limerick at the weekend and brought my PSP and NGPC. I spent more time playing SNK vs Capcom and Gals Fighters than the PSP :)

Wow the battery life is amazing

I have to say the non-fighters are interesting me, particularly the card fighter game. I ADORE handheld stuff in particular 2D games and I love my GBC and GBA with a passion. I suppose when you think about it I really should have one. I'll probably end up a bit of a fanboy once I do get one!

What I'll do is keep an eye out on them on eBay and see what happens over the next few weeks.... I still want a few more shooters for the Saturn, 360 and Dreamcast and a few AES carts for good measure, plus keep up to date on more contemporary games too - going to be an expensive year and even more so if I get a NGCP!!

BTW, Smyths in Cork City used to really push the NGPC and were coming down with software for it - they had more than GameBoy even. Great shop back in the day.

Anyway, these arrived this morning from Neoyato in France....

    Zero Gunner 2! Nice! :)

Those lads in France are grand, I've ordered from them before. Shipping is a bit on the pricey side (as is always the case from France for some reason) but the goods they sell are quality and after sales service is top notch.

I received two games yesterday, one you may have seen already, the 'Jimmy Carr love-in passionate sports thing with the weird cover art' (and even weirder manual. Plus I received this today:

    1. Hauppauge HD-PVR [BNIB]

    4CfNF.jpg

    2. That weird athletics game [PS1, NTSC-J, SC-OCD] and Crest Of Wolf [PC Engine, NTSC-J, SC-OCD]

    z6rF3.jpg

Finally I can get started on my YouTube channel and work on content for my Pink Bullets vlog (well, I can do PS2 and XBOX 360 for now, still waiting on some Component>VGA stuff and I'm looking at an XRGB-3 as the Hauppauge has issue with retro console frame rates apparently). :)

    @Pyongyang

Yeah I'm pretty damn pleased to finally get my hands on that game - it was that title that made me go an buy a DC-X import boot disc for my PAL Dreamcast a few weeks back. I just needed to save up a little to buy it!

Its a great game anyway - I've played a good bit of it earlier there this evening. The rotating mechanic takes a little getting used to but once it clicks its really handy. When I first saw the game on YouTube I was amazed at its visuals - its a 2D shooter but the stages are all 3D and look fantastic. It kind of reminded me a bit of Ikaruga when I saw it running for the first time.

The game is very short but the stages are well designed and the shooting is challenging and its fair. I'm going to enjoy playing it now a lot more as I save up for my next imported shooting purchase....

Zero Gunner 2 is excellent. Pity the first game is Model 2. Must check if it's emulated.

Great find that for a tenner! What's the black plastic thing in the second picture?

It's a ps1 games holder. You sit your games into it and from what I can remember, can flip through them.

I had one years ago for some reason. Have no idea where it came from!

It holds the games i think? I had something similar to it at home.

Got New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS and Brain Training for 28 posted.
Happy with that tbh, given NSMB and MK are 35 each in Gamestop, preowned.
I was getting Left 4 Dead 2, Blazing Angels 2 and FarCry 2 all for 15 for the 360 but the guy was taking way too long so I knocked it on the head.

Nice. Was very disappointed with NSMB DS. It's good but it's not 'mario' good. It's a 7/10 for me whereas most main mario games are 10/10 or close.

It's also surprisingly easy. It's easy to save up 99 lives, but then when you boot up the game again you're back to 3 (like all modern Mario games)

Mario Kart DS, on t'other hand, is sublime.

Ordered Persona 2 for PSP a couple days ago, heard we're getting a better bundle over here but that one doesn't have an art-book either so I'm happy to do without the other bits and pieces...actually also bought the EU P3P for my gf the other day, after pinching the extras to go with my US version :P

I still regret not ordering the early edition of P3P that came with Stupei's hat.

Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets on the 360. I'll likely get it in mid-October possibly.

I've been looking at these Neo Geo Pocket Colours on eBay this afternoon. Might sort myself out with one possibly, budget depending. And by budget, I mean have a look down the back of the sofa! :D

I loved it  I suppose that had something to do with my nostalgia for the first one of the NES. Its easy but a lot of fun to play I think, looks great and has a lovely vibe to it. I love colourful games. It also had some great level designs, and I much prefer my Mario in 2D than in three dimensions.

I was actually pretty keen on NSMB DS. It's the big, empty Wii version/port that irks me slightly. It's okay, but compared to say, Donkey Kong Country Returns, its mediocrity shines all the more. My Wii has seen a lot of usage this year. I guess it's better to be collecting for it at the end of its lifespan, where it's got a decent number of titles than being the poor guy who got it at launch, naively waiting for a tonne of games to show up on it.

Can't call yourself a Neo Geo fanatic without one, get to it! :)

    Today's items I received were:

A haul of Puyo Puyo games for my Puyo Puyo collection. All loose, but good to have until I replace them with CIB's. The lot consists of:

    Super Puyo Puyo
    Super Puyo Puyo 2
    Super Puyo Puyo 2 Remix
    Super Nazo Puyo Ruru

I was the poor, sad individual who you describe. I bought the thing on Day 1 with Zelda, and proceeded to buy nothing else for it for nearly a year until Metroid 3 showed up.

I didn't take to Zelda at all. I didn't like the Wii remote for it, and I thought the game was samey. Once it arrived, I didn't like Metroid Prime 3 all that much either as it made me motion sick. I got stuck in both Zelda and Metroid Prime 3 and never finished them. I bought Mario Galaxy a month or so after Prime 3 and thought it was good, but not as good as others would have you believe..... I pretty much gave up on the Wii then and got into my retro big time.

So my Wii went unloved for a very long time. I suppose I could have maybe tried Excite Truck at the time, and one or two others. I still think though I was suckered into the hype and I think it was a very poor system for a very long time, outside of one or two games here and there. If it wasn't for the Virtual Console I would have sold it, and I never sell my games or systems as a rule.

I actually ended up with a lot or resentment towards the Wii. I felt it was a waste of money. One major reason for this is I felt that Zelda would have been better with a control pad and I felt that I should have bought it on the GameCube as I would have enjoyed it more, and not bothered buying the Wii. I feel that the Wii version should have allowed player use the GameCube pad for the Wii version. I actually think that GC or Classic control compatibility should have been included in every Wii game (within reason). I hated having motion control forced upon me. But it was my own fault though, buying the Wii - I was suckered in, but....

2010 changed everything for me. The system finally came into its own and began churning out superb games month in, month out. Sadly, most hardcore gamers had moved on, and top titles like Monster Hunter Tri, No More Heroes 2, Metroid Other M, Sonic Colours and Sin & Punishment 2 went largely ignored. Such a shame. At least the hugely improved Mario Galaxy 2 and the super Donkey Kong Country Returns did better.

I bought a lot of Wii games at the beginning of 2011 and played non-stop Wii during the first 6-months of this year, up until around about July, when I took a bit of a break from gaming for a few weeks, before going back to retro gaming again.

The Wii then is a system that I have very mixed views over. It had an awful start, and it didn't really get going until late 2009-ish in my view. Its sadly a spent force now bar a few decent looking RPGs over the coming year. Its sad that it wasn't a better system with more classic franchises represented, and maybe some new core series as well. Still though, its had some great games on there released fairly late in its life-cycle which I will remember fondly in the years to come.

Fcuk me I don't half go on do I?
