I'm not gonna rage against it or anything. but I'm embarrassed for people who embrace it.

And I'm embarrassed X2 when they start waffling about it as "it's a reason to go out and drink", as if there's something stopping anyone drinking on any day of the year.

I did my share of drinking but i never needed a reason for it.I was miserable ....reason enough.

Well if you feel the need to be embarassed for me, I'll be sure to have a tipple for you while I'm enjoying a Thursday night out I probably wouldn't have taken otherwise.

I'll be doubly ashamed for you when you think you're sticking it to me by engaging in Diagio PLC day. But go for your life.

I dont mind people 'enjoying' their pints, as long as they are not falling around the place. I walked through Eyre Square in Galaway last year at seven in the evening and there were a bunch of fcuking ejits stumbling around the place and pissing up against everything that stood upright. Its a fairly pathetic sight to be honest.

Theres no point in embracing it like its a national or religious holiday, but cheap drink, decent bands and an excuse for a night out!

Cant really complain about that! :D:D:D

That could have been any day of the year in Eyre Square to be fair...

If you don't like it, don't take part.

This country seems to be overstocked with nay-sayers. With people who want to suck the good out of everything. So what if it's a promotional tool? It'll bring some people a little fun, and at the end of the day, where's the harm in that?

I dont think i'm a nay sayer, its just not very nice walking through a crowd of fcuking ejits puking on the streets because they are just after ramming as many pints into them as they could.

Talk about playing to a stereotype.

I really don't get the whole "It's stupid" or the "It's just a marketing ploy" whingers. No **** Sherlock but at the end of the day it's a reason to meet up with your mates and go for a few pints knowing there will be a good atmosphere down at the pub.

If you don't like it then don't partake, and leave the high-horse at home.

We all have a right to walk through the streets without having to step in a pool of puke or urine. Its like watching a piss take from Family Guy or something.

That's what pisses me off. I'd have no problem with it if it didn't turn the city into a bloody zoo for the day/night.

Pain the absolute arse to commute through too. In fact, it's not so much commuting as pushing your way through a crowd drunk arseholes all the way home.

I look forward to the forthcoming Youtube videos of idiots rolling around the ground on glass in Temple Bar.

    /grumble

I'm not sure why you need a reason to go for a few pints on a thursday night.

Like I said, i've no annoyance at it or anything. i'd just be embarrassed that the diageo execs would be watching it and saying "there you go, 100% predictable". I'd just feel a little stupid. Which isn't to say everyone should. It's just how I'd feel. Like a victim of normal advertising x100.

Plenty of other streets to use to avoid going down Shop street, surely you can get up ten minutes early that one friday and go the long way around

Thats ridiculous. Why should i change my route to avoid a load of piss pots?

So that you dont walk in piss?

I'm not justifying pissing on the street but surely adding five minutes onto your commute is not a good enough reason to cancel the whole event and stop the thousands of people who dont piss on the street going out having a good time on a gloomy thursday.

So a good time equals pissing and puking on the street? Can you see something wrong with this picture?

It's not that a reason is needed it's that you know there will be a good crowd out and the atmosphere will be good. During the Summer when my mates weren't at college in different counties we'd go out every Tuesday and Thursday night for a few pints but it was difficult getting everyone to go out. On Arthur's Day, even though college has started back up, it's not a problem because you can almost guarantee a good night.

Diageo are essentially organising the night out, instead of calling around and trying to convince people it will be good craic and they should come out for a few it's almost a certainty people will come out because you know it'll be good craic. They're providing a service (organising a national night out) and expecting a return (people drinking Guiness) and as I can be sure a good night will be had I'll happily go out and have a few.

It's essentially Paddy's day but backed by a company. Who's backing it is irrelevant to me as long as the craic is had.

Ah see now you're going off topic. You can run around in circles arguing that the Irish drink too much. Bottom line is that we do and there is very little that can be done about it.

We've already tried complaining and that didnt work so dont bother.

The topic is here is specifically Guinness's marketing campaign "Arthur's Day" so i think your options are to walk around shop street, or plough through the piss and get over it

People having been making up fake dates for celebrations for thousands of years. Look at Christmas.

Just STFU and keep your whingey and grumpy crap out of my Arthur's Day. It ruins the pint.

People that don't like it, won't partake, but it doesn't stop it being a load of bollocks.

Diageo are herding people into establishments that sell their product.

People are following orders, and seemingly not only doing as their told, but thanking them for the opportunity to make them money.

I suppose its a useful service if you are indeed the proverbial who literally can't organise a p1ss up in a brewery by yourself :)
