Well, it pretty much is. Not since Sweetest Day (AKA Love Day, AKA Valentine's 2) has such a fake holiday existed.

Marketing masquerading as culture, as the fella says.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,163 ✭✭✭✭Liam Byrne

Phew! Some else railing against this marketing bull****.

If I'm drinking anything on that day, I'll be drinking Murphy's as a protest.

It was fine as a one-off centenary day, but trying to turn it into a recognised "holiday" is pretty pathetic - almost as sad as those who fall in behind it.

The 250th anniversary wasnt too bad. Its just a joke now.

A reason to go out and get plastered.

I'm not complaining, you don't have to celebrate it y'know.

If you don't like, don't partake. Simples.

People having been making up fake dates for celebrations for thousands of years. Look at Christmas.

Just STFU and keep your whingey and grumpy crap out of my Arthur's Day. It ruins the pint.

I have never been in the country for it before and this year I will be. I got tickets for one of the venues that some friends are going to and I intend on having a good night. I have no interest in celebrating Guinness but any excuse for a good time is a good excuse in my book.

Arthur Guinness was a protestant land owner - BOOOO-URNS

Can anyone think of a more genius marketing stroke in recent times?

The 250th was justified, this is just sad, but fcuk it, it does no harm to our economy. I always wondered what kind of a bonus/promotion the person who dreamt up the idea got.

Why don't people give out about Jack Daniels' birthday?

Its a bit pathetic that they won't have it on the same date, but instead insist on having it on a Thursday in the hope of getting more people out, but as someone says you don't have to partake.

As a stout/Guinness drinker I'd rather they didn't have it and pass the savings on the marketing on to the reducing the price of a pint for the other 364 days in the year.

Sure its on a different date every year, bit of a joke really, you'll have muppets in town smashing bottles all over the place aswell making ticks of themselves no doubt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭Caveman1

With all the crap going on with the country, it's nice to actually have something going on that people enjoy, plus it's a great excuse for a session oh and a free pint

Does the Jack Daniels company Market this as a special day and pretend that it's relevant ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

No less valid than any of the other ridiculous religious holidays that have become widely accepted over the decades. I for one hope it becomes a proper holiday in time, we need another bank holiday anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,844 ✭✭✭py2006

I actually think its marketing genius!

It will bring tourists into the country which is always a good thing.

    Another Paddy's day!

They regularly do drinks promotions in the run up to it and they've had full page adverts in newspapers for the last 3 weeks as well.

    Diageo PLC marketting day!

I wouldn't mind, but they have the poxiest, blandest and most middle of the road ****e playing too.

Tis great to get a day to celebrate between the August Bank Holiday and Halloween.

I say everyone embrace it regardless of being a drinker or not and it will evenutally be another Bank Holiday for us which we badly need. Plus we need some kind of catchy theme song for the day instead of just shouting "To Martha".

I'm not gonna rage against it or anything. but I'm embarrassed for people who embrace it.

And I'm embarrassed X2 when they start waffling about it as "it's a reason to go out and drink", as if there's something stopping anyone drinking on any day of the year.

I did my share of drinking but i never needed a reason for it.I was miserable ....reason enough.

Well if you feel the need to be embarassed for me, I'll be sure to have a tipple for you while I'm enjoying a Thursday night out I probably wouldn't have taken otherwise.

I'll be doubly ashamed for you when you think you're sticking it to me by engaging in Diagio PLC day. But go for your life.

I dont mind people 'enjoying' their pints, as long as they are not falling around the place. I walked through Eyre Square in Galaway last year at seven in the evening and there were a bunch of fcuking ejits stumbling around the place and pissing up against everything that stood upright. Its a fairly pathetic sight to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 196 ✭✭EachSmallChime

Theres no point in embracing it like its a national or religious holiday, but cheap drink, decent bands and an excuse for a night out!

Cant really complain about that! :D:D:D

That could have been any day of the year in Eyre Square to be fair...

If you don't like it, don't take part.

This country seems to be overstocked with nay-sayers. With people who want to suck the good out of everything. So what if it's a promotional tool? It'll bring some people a little fun, and at the end of the day, where's the harm in that?

Nah, it was a bit like rag week. You wouldnt feel safe walking around. Personally, i think its taken to excess. Drink responsibly me bollix.

I dont think i'm a nay sayer, its just not very nice walking through a crowd of fcuking ejits puking on the streets because they are just after ramming as many pints into them as they could.

Talk about playing to a stereotype.

I really don't get the whole "It's stupid" or the "It's just a marketing ploy" whingers. No **** Sherlock but at the end of the day it's a reason to meet up with your mates and go for a few pints knowing there will be a good atmosphere down at the pub.

If you don't like it then don't partake, and leave the high-horse at home.

We all have a right to walk through the streets without having to step in a pool of puke or urine. Its like watching a piss take from Family Guy or something.

That's what pisses me off. I'd have no problem with it if it didn't turn the city into a bloody zoo for the day/night.

Pain the absolute arse to commute through too. In fact, it's not so much commuting as pushing your way through a crowd drunk arseholes all the way home.

I look forward to the forthcoming Youtube videos of idiots rolling around the ground on glass in Temple Bar.

    /grumble

I'm not sure why you need a reason to go for a few pints on a thursday night.

Like I said, i've no annoyance at it or anything. i'd just be embarrassed that the diageo execs would be watching it and saying "there you go, 100% predictable". I'd just feel a little stupid. Which isn't to say everyone should. It's just how I'd feel. Like a victim of normal advertising x100.
