Today marks the end of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The law is repealed. From this day forward, gay and lesbian soldiers may serve in our Army with the dignity and respect they deserve. Our rules, regulations and politics reflect the repeal guidance issued by the Department of Defense and will apply uniformly without regard to sexual orientation, which is a personal and private matter.

For over 236 years, the U.S. Army has been an extraordinary force for good in the world. Our soldiers are the most agile, adaptable and capable warriors in history—and we are ready for this change…

Accordingly, we expect all personnel to follow our values by implementing the repeal fully, fairly and in accordance with policy guidance. It is the duty of all personnel to treat each other with dignity and respect, while maintaining good order and discipline throughout our ranks. Doing so, will help the U.S. Army remain the strength of the nation.”

I'm happy this silly discrimination is over. It will seriously be one of those things people look back on and just think "Wtf" in years to come.

No need to belittle it, I get your point but it's a big step forward. Well done to Obama.

About time and I bet the US army wont fall apart. The weird thing to spite having to be a very adaptable organisation as in war the scenario changes all the time. But armies with their traditions tend to be very structured and conservative.

So you get a history of armies resisting change, for instance with the US army,,if you let the Irish join the moral and discipline will break down,,it didn't, then the Blacks, it didn't breakdown, then woman again it didn't break down and now gays and it will continue with out noticing.

Except I go with Bill Hicks "anyone stupid enough to join the American military then let them".

Yeah. Bill Hicks said it best:

'anybody... DUMB ENOUGH, to want to join the military - should be allowed to join.'

I agree with Hicks. I'm not belittling anything - just giving my opinion. The US military hasn't exactly painted itself in glory over the past forty years. They've been involved in more 'bad' wars than good, and their reputation, outside of the US, is pretty much garbage. If gays want to join that - bully for them. Equal opporunity oil grabs.

AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA , that lad, always the comedian , either that or he just forgot about 70% of what the us army has ever done

There was a show a few months back (back when McCains held was spinning from the bill). I don't recall the military guy, but he was quite senior. IIRC he said that most people know who is gay, just no one talks about it and most don't care.

So it looks like this is just an official ending to something that has ended a while ago.

But they have in the majority of cases.

They beat an imperialistic germany twice

They kept an aggressive soviet union and the spread of communism at bay

And they are trying stop the Taliban from getting hold of Pakistani nukes.

I could add a lot more
But they got the big ones right, they have use their power badly at times, I think it would have been a much worse world without them.

Lets see what China will do when they are an unchallenged superpower.

Take away their guns and swords and let some hand to hand combat commence.

The American army for most its history always had the best capability.

But soldier wise I would say the Wehrmacht even though they lost in the end, they gave the world a run for their money

Modern army probably the Israelis or the Taliban.

I love the way a pacifist, cowardly, neutral nation goes and slags the one country that has allowed us to be pacifist, cowardly and neutral all these years. The U.S. has made some big mistakes over the years but to see spineless cowards such as yourselves slagging about oil grabs and Spartans is hypocrisy of the highest order. If America doesn't secure oil then who the fcuk will do it for us, the Irish army? I presume all you clowns cycle everywhere, never fly and live in passively heated homes.
You stupid left wing motherfcukers make me sick.

    The fcuking Spartans indeed.
