Afternoon all, need some opinions please :)

I have a Kaze server setup to control my fans in a FT02 case as per below: (3 air penetrators and CPU cooler)

    173699.JPG

    (1) Fan - AP181 no 1
    Temp - Backplate

    (2) Fan - CPU Cooler
    Temp - Side of heatsink

    (3) Fan - AP181 no 2
    Temp - GPU

    (4) Fan - AP181 no 3
    Temp - HDD

In theory this should be working ok - but its not! The only one thats giving me a good reading is the GPU. When Im gaming the sensor reads the increase and my fan cranks up a few gears - grand. I guess this method relies on the placement of the sensors alot.

So I am thinking, my MB is an Crosshair IV and it has plenty of PWM fan connections. Would I be better to keep the fan controls "in house" and rely on the sensors on my MB. There is also room to add a couple of additional sensors for the GPU and HDD maybe. Will need to get a couple of 3 to 4 pin fan connectors also.

Also if you think that would be the best approach, what programme is the best for controlling the fans?

Appreciate any help you can give me!

Edit: Just starting the think should I actually have posted here.........

You shouldn't be controlling your CPU fan using the heatsink temperature! The actual CPU temperature will be MUCH higher than the heatsink temp, which could cause dangerous overheating. Connect it to the 4-pin fan slot on your motherboard and your computer will control it automatically using the actual temperatures of your CPU.

Speedfan is reasonably good. It requires a bit of tweaking to get right, especially since fans aren't labelled quite often. When it's all set up automatically and you have it running at startup, it works well.

You can just plug 3 pin pins into 4 pin connectors - you may or may not be able to regulate speed, you just have to try.

Oh ya sure I knew that................:o

There was about 10degree difference when I was running the AMD overdrive test

I didnt realise I might be able to regulate speed with a 3pin. Does it depend on the fan? I use Speedfan a bit just for temps so will see if I am able to set it up with my case fans.

    Cheers

No, it depends on the board.

After 10 minuites of furmark does 81C seem like a good temp for a 6870?

    http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/asus_radeon_hd_6870_directcu/4

The review here gets 79C with only 45% fan speed (furmark reports that the fan speed is at 50%)

Bear in mind my case cooling is kinda bad. I only have a top and back fan (I had to remove side and front fans)

I imagine it's fine. Furmark is a bit of a card melter, it'll probably be the most taxing thing your card will ever run.

I thought this would be the best thread to post my question in without opening a thread of my own. So here goes.

I have a bit of spare cash lying about so i was thinking i should get an ssd, i dont have much but im sure its enough for one. My budget is £100-150 so im asking you guys to recommend me the best ssd for the price.

    thanks :P

You can get 128GB Crucial M4 for that money. That would be the upper limit in terms of capacity. It's also a very good drive in terms of performance and reliability.

    Thanks for the answer.

Im clueless on SSD's so my apologies for the silly questions.

    1) Done a bit of research and found out that to install windows on the ssd you need to reinstall it completely. Does this mean my overclocking settings will delete themselves?

    2) How hard is it to actually transfer the files to the SSD? And does the original packaging come with the transfer kit?

btw i have 6 xSATA 3 Gb/s ports if that would be any problem.

    Thanks.

    No.*

I think some manufacturers might throw in ghosting software or similar as an added extra, though most don't as far as I'm aware. Are you talking about game installs etc?

You can buy some ssds with a data transfer kit, crucial are the only ones ive seen who do it.
Here is the 128gb m4 with a transfer kit.

if you decide to build a pc and order parts from amazon.com. ie america.are there any compatibility issues?
for example will an ssd, cpu, psu, all from america work here?is there anything i should be wary of?

    cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

Why are you thinking of doing that?

Everything will work bar the PSU although that will possibly have a 110/230 V switch.

i was doing it because i thought it would be cheaper?but i was looking there and its not much cheaper really.when you take postage into account etc.

Import duties and VAT (around +25%) and whether they'll actually ship the hardware is the main concern.
Most PSUs will work as long as they take 220-240V that we have here. You'd need to be sure if you don't want to blow up your system.

yea, cheaper till you get stopped for customs excise tax/duty. then a whole lot more expensive. add something like 25% (tax + handeling) to the price to compensate for this.

    It would also complicate returns.

Hardwareversand.de is typically the cheapest place to buy systems from.

My first build is on its way from HWVS. It cost €1580 including shipping. Out of curiousity I priced up the exact same system on OCUK and it was €200 dearer there at €1790. For a laugh I tried speccing a system from Dell (Where we have bought all our PC's previous to this) as close as possible to the spec of my HWVS build. The XPS was 2600+ and the Alienware was 3000+ :D:D

As Bazza alluded to, System is the operative word. The cumulative smallish savings on all the parts adds up to a worthwhile saving on the cost of a full build as does the €30 flat rate DHL shipping fee. ie The shipping is good value for a full build. It seems though that on smaller orders where there isn't the same level of cumulative savings and where the flat rate 30 euro for DHL shipping is a lot for a small package, well in that scenario thats not usually enough to offset the hassle of the bank transfers and language barrier etc.

    Regarding this again:

1)Im not fully aware of which SATA ports i have - sata2 or sata3 so im wondering do they differ in any way?

2)Currently i have 2x500gb harddrives connected therefore i have no spare sata cables. So my question is where could i get these cables that would fit my motherboard(asus p6t-se) and the ssd im going to get(crucial m4)?

    Cheers

Reccommended specs look every bit as formidable as expected. Didn't realise that DX9 was not supported (Google reveals this was announced a year ago :o), but then again any card that is even remotely capable of running the game would have DX10 anyway with it being well over 4 years old by now.

interesting part is that it rules XP completely out.

Hard to believe that it was released over 10 years ago :D I think its time has passed anyway :P
