Just imagine how much 2d printers annoy you. Just imagine that in an extra dimension.

On topic, I think the value of free **** will always outweigh the morals. Besides I wouldn't pay to watch most stuff I do or do not download anyway. Except battlestar galactica. Its epic.

3D printer jam? I'd "office space" the f*cking thing.

People are still buying stuff but they're buying (what they perceive at least to be) quality.

This is why the industry is worrying. The can't hype/force product on the public anymore cos people can find out what it's like first hand. Quality products will still make money but the crud is now a dead duck for them.

The last dvd I bought was Scott Pilgrim (Mary Elizabeth Winstead was the clincher) and damn near threw the remote at the telly for the un-skippable anti-piracy ads that you can fast forward but not skip. F*ckers.

Last movie i downloaded actually. Good movie. Even better without those ads. :pac:

The thing about it being bad for jobs etc isn't really true, the only people who go on and on about it are the music industry bosses because they make the biggest profit on CD's and paid for downloads. Bands only make one or two euro on every album.

Lots of bands have said that while it's illegal, they'd rather have people download their music than to not have heard it at all. I think that's fair enough anyway :p

I don't really download stuff though in case my computer gets a virus or spyware or something. Has that happened to any of ye from downloading movies and stuff?

    .

I might not, but if my friend bought one and offered to burn me a copy? Naturally.

But then there is the retail industry, there use to be about 4 vid shops and about the same in music shops with-in a mile of me, now there are no record shops unless you would regard Tesco as a record shop and 1 extravision shop.

Also the size of these industries have been reduced, the music industry if you were to reflect it in share prices have being greatly reduced along with the movie industry.

That does have a real effect on jobs in an economy. Piracy is also a problem that will get worse as this tech improves, unless they do something, I don't know what that is yet but I have no doubts people are working on the problem.

EDIT Water for Elephants was good, at least I thought so, different.

but yeah a decade of ripping stuff :p most was seemingly not actually available to buy though.

I was never going to pay a tenner to watch it in a cinema, nor was I ever going to pay 30 quid for the DVD, so the way I see it, they're not actually losing out by me downloading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,981 ✭✭✭Caliden

Water for elephants wasn't a bad film, don't see why everyone on the first page is jumping on the bandwagon and saying its ****e? Good chance that none of them have seen it and only assume that since the bloke from twilight is in it so it must be ****e.

I freely download movies as the price for renting one is just stupid. Lower the prices and then I might consider it.

I would've thought the impending demise of HMV would've taught people how much damage illegal downloading can do, but obviously not. (And, before people start, yes I do recognise that legal downloading has also played a part...but the concept of downloading music stemmed from Napster, Limewire et al...and the illegal aspect of it has fast-forwarded the process). If you know anyone who works there, or needs a job for that matter, then when they're on the dole queue soon every one of us has played a part in that. Like it or not.

Oh, I torrent too, so don't think I'm absolving myself of any guilt here from a high horse.

Music, I pay for, since I work in that field.

I download TV shows and don't feel guilty about it since I'll buy the boxsets if I enjoy them. And if stations had common sense and made them easily available for all to view, internationally, on their websites (even including some ads as 4OD do) then I'd watch on there.

Movies...well, I think that studios are out-of-touch with their valuation of their products in charging for cinema tickets and DVD prices.* If they were reasonable and charged a fair price on, say, iTunes (or even had Netflix available over here) then I'd be happy to pay my way. Would people here who download feel the same? Or do you download just because you can?

*I also used to work in a cinema where one wanker of a manager once lectured us all saying, "If you work here and illegally download, you make me sick." Since he was an arse, I'm more than happy to contribute in any way to forcing him to projectile vomit.

But there is a fair price or free and I will add seemingly the process is so easy and quick now, plus the quality is perfect enough, its more convenient, no=more bringing the vid back or shopping.

So the internet is not only free, it better.

I would gladly pay for a decent netflix equivalent over here if a) we had one and b) I could use it on my phone, xbox, laptop and ps3...

Are you listening movie corporations? :P

I'd buy a lot more DVD's if the executives got off their asses and actually got things moving.

24 with Kiefer Sutherland used to finish up around April and they only released the DVD boxsets around November??? Christmas market I assume but fans left waiting six months even just to pre-order

I wanted to watch a film called The Blind Side, out in the USA in November and it was February before we got it in Europe

    Executives have themselves to blame

All depends on availability. If I can get a DVD / CD / legal download at a reasonable price, I'll happily pay. I especially will go out of my way to support smaller distributors and artists. Good translations of foreign films, jam-packed DVD sets, releases of classic films in a nicely restored format: these are worth paying for IMO, and usually from small companies who genuinely go out of their way to have a good quality release.

But the truth is we get ****ed over here in Ireland. Television especially. Not only do we have to wait for f*** knows how long to get the show in many cases, even then it can be relegated to mental graveyard slots if not on some god forsaken digital channel between the sub-softcore pornography. In the States you have Hulu, decent on demand services and hell even iTunes if you don't mind paying a euro or two for an episode. Here, only Channel 4 knows the value of customer choice and is willing to move on while the others lag sorely behind.

If something isn't available to a consumer in the first place without serious hoops to jump through, can you really blame them for taking the easy, handiest solution?

Strangely enough that was the last DVD I bought too. I specifically waited for it on DVD then when I tried to watch it I had the anti-piracy warning for 10 minutes. Then trailers and adds for another 5 - 10. Then when the movie finally started there was something wrong with the picture quality. I tried it in my original xbox, xbox 360 and both 2 laptops. It only worked properly in one of the laptops which only had a 13" screen. I said f this and downloaded it in avi that played in perfect quality on all my media players within 20 minutes and had been available for 2 months before the DVD came out

I downloaded a film once before, it took about 30 hours it chewed up my computer speed and the quality of the film was crap. So I never did again. Till..

Sick of the Extravision staff sniggering and laughing at me as some sort of weirdo who rents films, (most weeks). I went about downloading a film today.

Waters for Elephants, it took about 2 hours to download in HD and it is perfect.

On this UNNAMED site I can download music, TV series, audio books and even books.

Clearly this routine stealing of content cannot continue, it has to have a cost in the quality of future content and jobs in the wider economy.

So what is your opinion discuss.

What? Have you only discovered this now? These kind of sites and services have been around for years now... in fact there used to be a lot more of them before the US department of Justice started shutting them down

Its flawed logic because most people spend a fixed amount on non-essentials every month. If they spend less in one place then they spend more somewhere else.

So if somebody in HMV loses their job because of illegal downloading then by the same token somebody in a pub, restaurant or clothes shop has kept their job because the money has gone there instead.

    Overall it makes no difference.

Kind of, when I want to watch a DVD it is usually something impulsive in me. I say I will get a vid and then I drive to extravision.

I was under the delusion that downloading takes ages, But now I realise it doesn't.

Plus I only recently got 25 megs from UPC before that it was about 5.

But I am an avid reader and a big book buyer. I never knew you could download E and audio books.

I have actually downloaded the Dune saga Audio books, I like to listen to talking books when I am power walking, before that I would use the library for their sparse selection. Those things are very expensive.
