The Morals Of Downloading

I downloaded a film once before, it took about 30 hours it chewed up my computer speed and the quality of the film was crap. So I never did again. Till..

Sick of the Extravision staff sniggering and laughing at me as some sort of weirdo who rents films, (most weeks). I went about downloading a film today.

Waters for Elephants, it took about 2 hours to download in HD and it is perfect.

On this UNNAMED site I can download music, TV series, audio books and even books.

Clearly this routine stealing of content cannot continue, it has to have a cost in the quality of future content and jobs in the wider economy.

So what is your opinion discuss.

Maybe they're laughing at your taste in films. Heh, Water for Elephants. Pfffffft.

    I'd download a car if I could! ^_^

Also this debate has been done to death both here and in the computer forum.

Hollywood blockbusters deserve to be stolen. They're too crap and when people pay to watch them they are rewarding mediocrity and simplicity.

I imagine that the stupidity of consumers will play a bigger part than illegal downloads in lowering the quality of content.

You would be surprised in Hollywood there are more flops produced then blockbuters. Just the Blockbusters subsidise the flops. But now, with piracy as easy as it is, maybe that wont be the case for much longer.

Its why the studios are not willing to take chances anymore and you are getting the usual film clones and remakes and sequels even prequels.

The best thing about downloading films is that you don't have to sit through those poxy "you wouldn't steal a car, would you?" piracy warnings that DVDs have.

It actually makes stealing films even more worth while.

If a movie isn't ****, people will be more inclined to pay extortionate cinema ticket prices to watch it. If it is ****, then they'll wait and pirate it. Seems like a fair system

Not something I lose sleep over tbh. Last time I went to the cinema was for Captain America and the c*nting projectionist made a mess of the sound. Next time one of those assembly-line marvel films comes out I'm getting a camrip. At least then I'll be able to hear what the actors are saying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,303 ✭✭✭Temptamperu

I pirate everything except books and videogames, although the way the videogame industry is going i may start to rip those too.
I lose no sleep over this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭Oh_Noes

No problem with it if it squeezes Hollywood a bit and makes the film industry smaller. At the moment Hollywood is just churning out remakes and predictable rubbish for profit. I'd say in one way or another the openess of the net will filter out a lot of the sh1te like it has been doing to a certain extent with music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

eh, its a grey area, sometimes I'll download the HD version of something I already own. its the same film, I already paid for it, its just shinier looking. a lot of the time I've been given something by someone that was got off the net or downloaded it myself I went off and bought it, which I wouldnt have done without seeing it first, so its swings and roundabouts really.

I'll steal music, but I go to concerts when I can. The artist gets a much bigger cut from the concert than they do from the album, so my conscience is clear.

Ill be laughing at them when they are sitting in the dole office with the staff from Chartbusters.

How can they laugh ast you when its their job?

I havent bought a DVD or CD in about 4 years.

i think its a classic case of the studios blaming piracy for lack of ticket sales in cinema,i think this day and age some people cant afford to go to the cinema,or reading apon views or word of mouth the movie is simply crap.

I do wonder what's the point now of having a movie censor in the country given the ease of been able to obtain an uncensored version from online sellers/other sources/internet video channels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,910 ✭✭✭Sisko

With the internet I can get information instantly the second I want it. I like this.

I apply it to music and movies and tv shows too. I'm kinda in the mood to watch blade runner tonight - this means that when I do get in the mood I can be instantly watching it within a few clicks (streaming) or 10mins (downloading)

Went through series 2 and 3 of the inbetweeners hung over on saturday morning - in bed on the laptop. Enjoyed the hell out of that.

Its all at my finger tips, no waiting.

I don't see any of this as stealing when its on the internet. No more so than taping music from the radio.

I have loads of DVD's and many of them ironically have this ad on them ....

Worst of all you can't skip it of fast-forward thru it so basically your reward for playing by the book and giving money to the industry is to get a lecture telling you to not download pirate material. Talk about a classic case of attacking the wrong people.

Just for that I'll download whatever the hell I want. The ad is the ultimate backfire. No only does it piss buyers off but it spreads awareness that you can go online and download movies for free.

The last dvd I bought was Scott Pilgrim (Mary Elizabeth Winstead was the clincher) and damn near threw the remote at the telly for the un-skippable anti-piracy ads that you can fast forward but not skip. F*ckers.

Just imagine how much 2d printers annoy you. Just imagine that in an extra dimension.

On topic, I think the value of free **** will always outweigh the morals. Besides I wouldn't pay to watch most stuff I do or do not download anyway. Except battlestar galactica. Its epic.

People are still buying stuff but they're buying (what they perceive at least to be) quality.

This is why the industry is worrying. The can't hype/force product on the public anymore cos people can find out what it's like first hand. Quality products will still make money but the crud is now a dead duck for them.

The thing about it being bad for jobs etc isn't really true, the only people who go on and on about it are the music industry bosses because they make the biggest profit on CD's and paid for downloads. Bands only make one or two euro on every album.

Lots of bands have said that while it's illegal, they'd rather have people download their music than to not have heard it at all. I think that's fair enough anyway :p

I don't really download stuff though in case my computer gets a virus or spyware or something. Has that happened to any of ye from downloading movies and stuff?

    .

I might not, but if my friend bought one and offered to burn me a copy? Naturally.

But then there is the retail industry, there use to be about 4 vid shops and about the same in music shops with-in a mile of me, now there are no record shops unless you would regard Tesco as a record shop and 1 extravision shop.

Also the size of these industries have been reduced, the music industry if you were to reflect it in share prices have being greatly reduced along with the movie industry.

That does have a real effect on jobs in an economy. Piracy is also a problem that will get worse as this tech improves, unless they do something, I don't know what that is yet but I have no doubts people are working on the problem.

EDIT Water for Elephants was good, at least I thought so, different.

Think my downloading days are over tbh. seem to have swapped a computer for a smartphone, essentially the same thing nowadays?! if yer only keen on browsing..

but yeah a decade of ripping stuff :p most was seemingly not actually available to buy though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

I was never going to pay a tenner to watch it in a cinema, nor was I ever going to pay 30 quid for the DVD, so the way I see it, they're not actually losing out by me downloading.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,982 ✭✭✭Caliden

Water for elephants wasn't a bad film, don't see why everyone on the first page is jumping on the bandwagon and saying its ****e? Good chance that none of them have seen it and only assume that since the bloke from twilight is in it so it must be ****e.

I freely download movies as the price for renting one is just stupid. Lower the prices and then I might consider it.

Who honestly cares? If you want to download then go ahead download, i never think or give a fu*k who it could impact if i download, its free and im going to enjoy
    It! Happy days!

I would've thought the impending demise of HMV would've taught people how much damage illegal downloading can do, but obviously not. (And, before people start, yes I do recognise that legal downloading has also played a part...but the concept of downloading music stemmed from Napster, Limewire et al...and the illegal aspect of it has fast-forwarded the process). If you know anyone who works there, or needs a job for that matter, then when they're on the dole queue soon every one of us has played a part in that. Like it or not.

Oh, I torrent too, so don't think I'm absolving myself of any guilt here from a high horse.

Music, I pay for, since I work in that field.

I download TV shows and don't feel guilty about it since I'll buy the boxsets if I enjoy them. And if stations had common sense and made them easily available for all to view, internationally, on their websites (even including some ads as 4OD do) then I'd watch on there.

Movies...well, I think that studios are out-of-touch with their valuation of their products in charging for cinema tickets and DVD prices.* If they were reasonable and charged a fair price on, say, iTunes (or even had Netflix available over here) then I'd be happy to pay my way. Would people here who download feel the same? Or do you download just because you can?

*I also used to work in a cinema where one wanker of a manager once lectured us all saying, "If you work here and illegally download, you make me sick." Since he was an arse, I'm more than happy to contribute in any way to forcing him to projectile vomit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭4leto

But there is a fair price or free and I will add seemingly the process is so easy and quick now, plus the quality is perfect enough, its more convenient, no=more bringing the vid back or shopping.

So the internet is not only free, it better.
