Can you go automatically into teaching you mean? No, you'd need a HDip in education to do that. And whether you continue to a masters is personal preference, it's about what you want to do!

Hope this is not a stupid question but, can you teach after doing the Hdip in Irish History or does it lead on to further studies in History, like a masters? I am going into third year and would like to continue study but don't know what way to go about it.

No, it's not a teaching qualification, you'd still need to do the dip in education for that. Even if you did the education dip, this course wouldn't qualify you to teach history because there's no international history element. If you did history as part of your undergrad, it's very likely that between the two you'd be covered, but, as a standalone course it does not cover you in any way. That's a good question to ask as it really isn't made clear in the prospectus for the course.

I looked at it as kind of a primer for a masters. History was a fairly small part of my undergrad, and, having decided to do the Modern Irish History M.Phil in Trinity, I felt a year of pure history beforehand would serve me well. While there were parts of it I didn't like, such as having to take undergrad classes, it served its purpose for me, and it was worth doing.

Another positive is that it's a good introduction to historical research for those who haven't done an undergrad dissertation.

If history was a small part of your degree, or if you didn't do too well in your exams, then this would probably suit you. However if history was a big part of your undergrad and you were a strong student I'd skip this and just go straight into a masters.

Am doing MH1114, major in English, minor is History, absolutely love the History, especially researching for essays. Think Masters in History is the way to go (if I get through next year), thanks for all the info.

No worries, best of luck in your final year!

I have paid my deposit on my postgrad course (200 euro) using the student web services. However I paid the deposit by logging into the student web services using my undergrad student number and password rather than the link provided on pac.ie which takes you to the student web services site with your new student number.

Sorry if this confuses anyone but I am just worried as I am wondering whether they will still get my deposit despite it being paid with my old student number?

When I was paying the deposit I clicked the link on PAC that took me direct to webservices, but it was my webservices page, and I could access all my old exam results etc. And if I log in now with my student number I've been using the last few years, it confirms I've paid the postgrad deposit in the payment history section. Are you sure there's a new student number?

Pretty sure you keep the same student number for postgrad anyway so I'm sure it'll be grand! If you're worried, send an email to the history dept/fees office just to make sure it's okay.

I never paid that deposit, oops :P

Thanks for the quick reply You Text Here. :) When I clicked on the deposit link later I seen that my student number was changed and started getting worried but I general worry over every little thing so hopefully it's ok. I'll give them an email just to be sure!

Just tried it there again and when I log in normally with my student number I've been using the past three years it confirms it as paid. However when I click the link on Pac it does not give me access to my past exam results etc. and it has my name with a new student number as in my old one was 6******* and now it has changed to 11*******.:o

    Thanks for your help! :)

Edit: Having just looked at it further it appears that the new student number is also my Pac number. I'm thinking that maybe they haven't updated it yet or something along that line. I'll drop into the department on Monday and just make sure everything is order. :)

I'd trust the actual NUIM web services more so than PAC with regards knowing your student number and stuff. So I'm sure it'll be okay :)

Oh I wouldn't say I'm much help at all. I was looking at my PAC account and I see an 11etc. number but it's the PAC application number. And I can't find a link to take me to my nuim webservices page. I've to login to that separately from the nuim site. On PAC I can see the Application Status, again showing the 11... number.

I don't think that's a new student number though. I probably just don't have access to similar pages as you, maybe it's to do with your course or something.

I reckon send an email to the graduate studies office in the morning, or ring them up, to confirm everything's ok with your application. It's most likely fine, but at least it'll set your mind at ease.

Hey!I was in hospital when I paid the deposit and wasn't really with it and I used the student web services page with my undergrad number etc and didn't click on the pac one and when I copped this a few weeks later I had a mini melt down and I rang the PAC office and they were like no we didn't get anything from you not even a confirmation so I had total freak out and rang the hist dept and Anne who works in the office, really lovely women, said not to worry that they had gotten my deposit and that so long as it was paid to anywhere in Maynooth that they would get it and that my name was down for the course, deposit paid etc!Turns out the woman in PAC thought I was talking about the Hdip in education!ha so I think so long as you paid to NUIM itself you should be fine and if you're still worried ring the hist dept I really can't sing their praises enough on how helpful they are!sorry about the loooooong msg but hope it puts your mind at ease :)

Ah well, I know that there is a late registration date on Wednesday 28th September so I'm sure you could register then. I highly doubt you're the only one missing it :) Yep it's nice to know there's others doing it, just looking at the electives now and deciding which ones to do :D

MA in Classics... Greek and Roman stuff. I think tomorrow's to sort out seminar times and give us work to prepare for the classes next week etc. Hit the ground running and so on.
