Basically offered an MSc in psychology but nothing made official yet. Still considering it. Im wondering whats the support like for postgrad students? Theres no lectures like last year, so I guess I'd like to know how all the current postgrads found socialising and meeting new people as there are no real peers to be mingled with as such. Anyone care to enlighten me?

And whats induction day all about?

    Cheers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

No idea about the induction day, someone else might be able to enlighten you about that. Clubs and Socs are your best bet, pick a few you're interested in and go along to the events the first few weeks and you'll easily make friends. There's a postgrad soc as well, it was run by a few lads I knew and they did all sorts of cool stuff like go-karting, etc,. Those chaps have moved on this year but I assume it's still going strong.

Are you new to Maynooth? It's a laid back place, most people love it so you shouldn't find it difficult to integrate yourself. What's the MSc about anyway? My project is psychology related.

Thought I answered this but must have gone missing. Basically I did my BA there last year and was offered further study by my thesis supervisor so I know the campus and dept quite well.

MSc is in the circadian clock function, immunology, and chronic mood disorders such as depression and anxiety :D

What I meant was that since we're not in a class anymore postgrads must feel a little alienated from other students. Most people from my class would have moved on this year. The undergrad stereotype of postgrad students is a complete library rat :p

I'm a postgrad now too! Doing one on Irish History :D

@Gooshtyle - Seeing as postgrads tend to get their own labs/study areas within their department, I'm sure you'll get to know people in there :) Your research project sounds very interesting too! PM me if you need someone to do experiments on :p

Doing a taught MA in Contemporary Composition with modules in computer music (Programming, Acoustics, Interactivity).
Can't wait, especially because I won't be doing so much research, just practical stuff. =)

chatting to a girl in the graduate studies office and she said induction is around the 16th of sept and registration is usually around the week of the 20th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,625 ✭✭✭How so Joe

The order of registration is up on the website, is it not? I'm sure I saw it, 'cause I had a minor freak out trying to figure out how I was meant to register in person in Maynooth when I was in Frenchyland....

    >goes hunting<

Edit: I have no idea how in the world I found this in the first place, because it took me a looooooooong time to find it this time, but here it is. Schedule of registration 2011-2012

When it says that a course starts two weeks prior to formal university lectures, Does that mean 2 weeks before registration or what? MA Economics is the course btw.

On the reserve list for the Ma Military History and Strategic Studies because I had to repeat an exam I was absent for after Christmas. Hopefully will get it, if not I'll be doing a Hdip in Irish History for the year. Either ways, a fourth year in Maynooth it is :)

When my repeat result comes out I'll know for sure but it'll be either the MA in Military History or the Hdip in Irish History. Regardless of my result in the repeat exam I'll still graduate with a 2:1 so hopefully I'll get the MA in Military History. If not, I'm guaranteed the Hdip so that puts me at ease.

One of my best mates in college and former housemate is doing the MA in Society and Space this year. Seems very excited for the course. No doubt you'll meet him, top fella:)

Good on ya! Regarless of what your doing its a year in Maynooth - whoop whoop, and we're only young ones! :p Ah thats gas one of my bestmates and housemate for the 2nd year running is doing the MA in Military History. She seems fairly excited about it all. Might bump into her too :p She's good craic :D

But thats good he's a top fella - kind of nervous its all going to be full of serious do gooders! :o

I thought I was young to be doing at postgrad at 21, apparently not :p

Also, KingKazama, if you end up in doing Irish History we'll be classmates.

Woooo!:D More than likely I'll be doing the Hdip because of the limited spaces in the MA in Military History. I dropped into the History department and found out that with the cancellation of the MA in European History a lot of people whom already accepted the European History course will be doing the MA in Military History instead, so now the chances are smaller. :o Either ways I can't wait to start back again :)

The two year part time course is it? No reason you couldn't do a PhD afterwards if you were interested and qualified. I didn't go by that route, I started out giving my supervisors a hand with a project and it snowballed from there. Now it consumes my life :P

That's the one, yeah. I've no plans to do a PhD at this stage but in two years time, who knows?
    Thanks anyway.

Hello future classmate :D I haven't heard anything yet! Well, apart form the bank giro for paying fees :p

I'm actually getting really worried about starting now... I haven't done history since my junior cert, and it seems like everyone else doing my course has degrees in it! :/

Hello to you too! :D yep that's all i've gotten as well!so at least we're in the same boat!It might be a bit daunting, but last I hear Dr.Gerard Moran is the head of the hdip and he is possibly one of the nicest people i've ever dealt with in Maynooth,he is a certified ledge!!So don't worry you won't just be thrown in at the deep end! :)

I did the course last year and thought it was ok. I did history as part of my undergrad and while it definitely helped quite a bit, there were people in the class who had never done it and they seemed to be able to keep up.

There isn't really a head of the Hdip due to it being split into two semesters, but Gerard Moran was the supervisor of the second guided research project and I can confirm that he is indeed a legend! I missed a load of time at the start of the second semester cause my OH had an accident and he really helped me to get back on track with my work, I ended up doing fairly well, due in no small part to him.

One thing that's worth noting about the course is that you have take electives from undergrad history. I didn't realise this and it was my least favourite part.

Overall I found it to be worth doing, there's nothing to be daunted about, as long as you keep on top of your research projects you'll be fine. If either of you have any questions about it feel free to ask.

Great stuff, great to hear from someone who has done the course. I've had Gerard Moran before and the man is a legend and very helpful. Cheers for the info. :)

Thanks so much! Your post has made me feel a bit better :D

You know how we have to do undergrad modules as our electives, how does that work the first week or two? Some of my friends did History for their undergrads, and they told me they had to sign up for their electives before the semester began as there was limits on the number of students that could do each module - however, H.Dip students don't register until after lectures begin  Is there only a few places left on random modules then for us?
