PhD in Maths Education, going into my third year. How about yourself?

I'm starting the Masters in Maths Education. Can that lead to the PhD or is yours seperate? Not that I'm planning to do a PhD mind, just curious.

The two year part time course is it? No reason you couldn't do a PhD afterwards if you were interested and qualified. I didn't go by that route, I started out giving my supervisors a hand with a project and it snowballed from there. Now it consumes my life :P

That's the one, yeah. I've no plans to do a PhD at this stage but in two years time, who knows?
    Thanks anyway.

Hello future classmate :D I haven't heard anything yet! Well, apart form the bank giro for paying fees :p

I'm actually getting really worried about starting now... I haven't done history since my junior cert, and it seems like everyone else doing my course has degrees in it! :/

I did the course last year and thought it was ok. I did history as part of my undergrad and while it definitely helped quite a bit, there were people in the class who had never done it and they seemed to be able to keep up.

There isn't really a head of the Hdip due to it being split into two semesters, but Gerard Moran was the supervisor of the second guided research project and I can confirm that he is indeed a legend! I missed a load of time at the start of the second semester cause my OH had an accident and he really helped me to get back on track with my work, I ended up doing fairly well, due in no small part to him.

One thing that's worth noting about the course is that you have take electives from undergrad history. I didn't realise this and it was my least favourite part.

Overall I found it to be worth doing, there's nothing to be daunted about, as long as you keep on top of your research projects you'll be fine. If either of you have any questions about it feel free to ask.

Great stuff, great to hear from someone who has done the course. I've had Gerard Moran before and the man is a legend and very helpful. Cheers for the info. :)

Thanks so much! Your post has made me feel a bit better :D

You know how we have to do undergrad modules as our electives, how does that work the first week or two? Some of my friends did History for their undergrads, and they told me they had to sign up for their electives before the semester began as there was limits on the number of students that could do each module - however, H.Dip students don't register until after lectures begin  Is there only a few places left on random modules then for us?

Hey, I know this is super lazy question but since this forum is full of those at
this time of year I'll fire ahead.
Is there any important things postgrads have to go to in September?
I don't start till Oct so I'm wondering if I should set foot on campus till then.

I know about reg and fees and some super special coffee thing but no idea about anything else.

Not that I know of, Norrdeth.

Unless it's stated in your course's intinerary then I guess you don't have to do anything else apart from register and/or go to the informal meeting for your class.

I realise it says we're 'required' to attend, but just looking at the detailed programme there, besides the first two things, I can't imagine the rest would be useful if we've already been in the place three years? e.g.: Library Services, Computer Centre, Student Services, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Careers Office, Students Union, Optional Tour of Campus...

Do you reckon it's alright to attend the first couple of things (registration and fees etc.) and then leg it?

I was sent out an elective sheet via email about a week before the course started. It was first come first served, and I missed out on my first choice in semester one despite submitting my form the same day I received it! Pretty poorly organised in all fairness..

Also, unless you've already done history as an undergrad in maynooth, HY311 is compulsory as an elective in semester two and has a tutorial class. Make sure you sign up for the tutorials ASAP at the start of the semester, or you'll get stuck with a ridiculous time. On the plus-side, HY311 is a really good class, and one I learned a lot in despite being familiar with many of the topics already.

The electives are fairly easy to be honest, you already have a degree so undergrad classes should be fairly handy for you. It's the two research projects that are the tricky part. They're worth 50% of your marks and will take up most of your time. I didn't think much of the supervisor for the first one, he was far too hands off and didn't offer enough guidance. Having already done research methods and a pretty large dissertation as part of my undergrad, I was alright, but a few people seemed overwhelmed by it.

    G. Morans's approach in semester two was perfect however, plenty of support and guidance, everyone seemed a lot happier with it.

EDIT: I should just add that G. Morans tutorial classes for the research project are no joke. He expects you to know the readings thoroughly, and he will absolutely GRILL you on them!

Hope this is not a stupid question but, can you teach after doing the Hdip in Irish History or does it lead on to further studies in History, like a masters? I am going into third year and would like to continue study but don't know what way to go about it.
