Hasn't there been studies that tell us that not getting enough sleep shortens life expectancy? Anybody else heard of such?

Anywhere between 3-6 the night before College. And then 10+ on the weekends. I get on fine with only 3-6 hours sleep, though I'm sure I'd do better with more.

I remember reading somewhere that you could train yourself to function on very little sleep, by basically tricking your head into REM sleep right away. But its supposed to take years to manage. And it also could have been a load of crap.

I aim for around 8.5 during the week.9.5 fridays. Everyone tells me I dont need that much, well i'm the one falling asleep all day if I get 8hours or less.

I need a good 8 hours or so to function properly the next day.
Except when i'm drunk, then i seem to only be able to manage 4 or 5.

I could spend 10 hours in bed tossing and turning but I think I only get about 4-6 good hours sleep.

I usually get 7 hours or so, but (like the OP) the daylight savings time throws me off, and I haven't been able to sleep before 2am recently. It's been more than two months since the shortest night, so I hope it gets getter soon. I share a house with an older lady who gets about five hours, and a younger guy who gets about nine hours, and I think they both hate me ... :o

I think there was a thread on this quite recently where I said I get 6 but was trying to work it down to 5 - 5.5 hours. Haven't decreased from 6 yet but it's pretty much the norm now so I'll see.

Normally seven could do with more though.

About 6-7 during the week. At weekends I'm happy to sleep into the afternoon given the chance, but I should really have more of a routine.

I do love lazy mornings. I find if I go back to sleep soon after waking up, I tend to have more vivid dreams, and I do love me some good dreams :D

I need 8 hours but I never get it, 6 is the usual!

However, this week has been awful! 1 hour sleep Sunday night, 4 on Monday night and 5 last night! I'm a zombie around the place :(

I'll hopefully get around 12 Friday and Saturday night to compensate!!

I used to be bad, get to bed around 10, fast asleep by 1030, up for work at 830, but I would spend some days completely wrecked, despite 10 hours of quality sleep, so I've been slowly scaling back the last year or so. Now I get by on 7, and am working back towards 6.

Think I read somewhere that 6 is enough for most people and any more could shorten life expectancy?

Normally sleep about 7-9 hours, any more or less than that and i just don't function properly at all for the day.

How much I get and how much I need are two different questions.

I can function on 3-4 hours sleep, sometimes I've functioned on less. And I can keep that up for a few days. But at some point I will crash and become sick and need to sleep for 10 hours straight at least 2 nights in a row.

Typically on a school night I go to bed somewhere between 11 and midnight and get up just after 7am. I'm tired when I wake, but alert and functional after about five minutes.

The result is that on the weekends I can't stay in bed much after 10am, even if I went to bed at 3. If I was sober the night before, I could be up at 8:30.
This has changed a lot between the age of 25 and 29. At 25, you were lucky to see me up and about before midday at the weekend, drinking or not. But then I also considered any time before 1am any day of the week to be an "early night", so it all balances out in the end.

    Usually 4 - 6. Can't seem to sleep past 7 hours unless I'm sick.

I need about 8 hours sleep
I get about 5 hours sleep.

I function fine on the 5 hours, but I know I would be in much better form and have better skin/hair etc if I got the 8 hours! Getting out of bed in the morning is a drag!
