I have seen loads of these around the house lately, I generally leave them off but I had to catch this fella and throw him out the back garden as my girlfriend hates them and screams the house down when she sees them.

He is in a Pint glass in the photo, the other photo is just my pet tarantula.

sorry your girlfriend screams the house down if she sees spiders and you have a pet tarantula??!?! how does that work then

I was about to comment on the same thing.

Is it weird that I'm more creeped out by the small guy than I am with the tarantula (what shiny teeth it has :D)?

Ha she bought it for me for Christmas a few years ago.

I still dont get it either, she had to drive from the pet shop with the spider in a box on the passenger seat.

Not quite sure how she survived.

Well today the cat brought in one of those false widow spiders I saw above, I don't mind spiders and usually just chuck them out of the nearest window.
Unfortunately the cat dropped this one on my daughters lap, she started screaming and leapt up, cat ran, dogs gave chase barking like loons, she's still screaming and has no idea where it went, I can't get her to calm down and tell me what happened, dogs run back in barking, running about, cat returns and pounces on said spider, by this time I had decoded the screams and worked out what was wrong.
All this for a 2cm spider. :o

I have read that they are bigger due to global warming, more flies and food for them to eat, but then again that doesnt make too much sense with the summer we had here. Apparently there is one of those things in my living room, I havent gone in since.

So has anyone got any good methods how to get these guys out and to prevent them from getting in??

I found one in my apartment this weekend, scared me half to death and I still haven't found him again. Ugh.

I bought some of those devices you can plug in and they supposedly emit sounds to scare spiders and other insects. I haven't seen the spider since, but I'm not convinced he's not just hiding.

Has anyone used these and know if they are legit? Any other spider trap or other recommendations?

A few weeks back I found a medium sized spider running around directly underneath the sonic box thing my mam bought, which has been there for a year or more. Fairly conclusive proof that the type we have, at least, makes no difference (although no super-massive bastards this year yet, thank jesus - I hate the things. Hopefully we have a third really harsh winter to freeze the whole lot of them yet again).

Managed to send the aforementioned lad to spidey heaven, catching them is totally out of the question for me unfortunately.

We had our first one last night. About the size of a tennis ball, sat in front of the front door just waiting for me. OH quickly opened the door and ushered him out.

To be honest we have been in the house for just over a year now and this is the first spider bigger than a fingernail that we have seen. So I've been quite lucky.

Just hoping this isnt the start of something bigger. OH wont be there in the mornings to take care of them for me!

Hi, this huge fecker was in my sittingroom a few nights ago, i am terrified of spiders but i managed to spray him and he changed direction and start running towards me, i nearly deafened my son with the screams haha. He was standing up on the sofa shaking.

And at the end of July we had 8 false widow spiders out on the balcony. One of them was on my sons neck but fell off, must've got in his window and climbed onto his top, lucky it didn't bite him.

Nope, same as the spider I posted above, Tegenaria Species, they very from blacks to yellows to browns, common Irish spider, one of the biggest spiders you get in Ireland.

I sprayed them with antstop but it also kills other insects. If there is a spider in the house then yeah i spray it in the house. Anything just to get rid of them.

Contains deltamethrin

Signs and symptoms of poisoning by pyrethroids may take several forms. Because of the similarities to crude pyrethrum, pyrethroids may act as dermal and respiratory allergens. Exposure to pyrethroids has resulted in contact dermatitis and asthma-like reactions. Persons, especially children, with a history of allergies or asthma are particularly sensitive, and a strong cross-reactivity with ragweed pollen has been recognized. Severe anaphylactic (allergic) reactions with peripheral vascular collapse and respiratory difficulty are rare. Other symptoms of acute toxicity due to inhalation include sneezing, nasal stuffiness, headache, nausea, incoordination, tremors, convulsions, facial flushing and swelling, and burning and itching sensations. The most severe poisonings have been reported in infants, who are not able to efficiently break down pyrethroids (ETN, Pyrethroids, 1994). With orally ingested doses, nervous symptoms may occur, which include excitation and convulsions leading to paralysis, accompanied by muscular fibrillation and diarrhea (ETN, Pyrethroids, 1994). Death in these cases is due to respiratory failure. Symptoms of acute exposure last about 2 days.
Endocrine Disruption and Breast Cancer
Many pyrethroids have also been linked to disruption of the endocrine system, which can adversely affect reproduction and sexual development, interfere with the immune system and increase chances of breast cancer. Pyrethroids contain human-made, or xenoestrogens, which can increase the amount of estrogen in the body (Garey et al., 1998). When tested, certain pyrethroids demonstrate significant estrogenicity and increase the levels of estrogen in breast cancer cells (Go et al., 1999). Because increased cell division enhances the chances for the formation of a malignant tumor in the breast, artificial hormones, like those found in pyrethroids, may increase breast cancer risk (PCBR, 1996). Some pyrethroids are classified by EPA as class C (possible human) carcinogens.

I'm no big fan of spiders myself but I do think they are fascinating creatures and would never kill one just because the poor creature happened upon my bedroom or whatever :(
Ironically, those chemicals are far more harmful ton one's health than any of the spiders we get in Ireland!

For all you giant-hairy-spider-phobes the only real answer is to get a cat!!! I was at home last year watching tv when something ran across my bare foot  I yelped thinking it was a mouse but then caught sight of the biggest feicking spider that I ever saw dashing under the sideboard. uggggggg!

My friend suggested that I get a cat as they love to eat spiders for a snack. I am literally too terrified to catch a spider in a glass and put it out the window so it seemed like the best option.

On an aside - my cat eats moths too

I love Spiders and always pick up the large Garden spiders and release
them into the Garden. I swore I would never hold a Tarantula but I got
shamed into when my seven year old son held this female one in Kinsealy Petshop.

This is what you call a big spider.

the poor mother had ANOTHER one in her room last nite. I wonder what is is. we have had 2 in the living room since they started coming round again and about 15 in her room (lost count at this point). and now whilst i am not fond of them, i have developed a bit of resiliance and am able to rid the house of them (will not apologise for screaming if one comes legging it toward me!). however the mothers arachnaphobia has NOT decreased any and she will have a coniption over them

My contribution to the thread. I keep finding these big feckers. Must have found 10-15 in the last 3 weeks.

The missus absolutely HATES them, so I'm afraid they usually end up in spidey heaven.

I always find them in the same 2 spots in the house more or less - on the landing, and along 1 wall in the kitchen. They're always on the ground though, never up high or anything.

Shower of wusses... the don't bite.. in fact they clean up the place ..get of flies and other peskys... don't squish... escort them to the door in your hand.

OMG until today I would have agreed; I was throwing a stick for my dog and as I looked down at the dog I saw a small thumbfingernail size spider that looked like it was covered with green moss on it's body but wih brown legs. The f*^<er BIT ME and jumped off. I had a big red dot on my leg and within 10 minutes My leg swelled up like popcorn ; all curly and thick and hurt like hell. 10 hours later it now still hurts and the bite area has swollen to the size of my hand with a green rim and red welts across it.
I would never have minded spiders until today that is. Totally unbelievable. NOT happy at all.

It wasn't one of the guys I posted above that bit you. Did it have a really rounded abdomen? Sounds like you're the victim of a False Widow bite.

dont know if anyone knows their spiders too good but theyre common house spiders, theyve gotten bigger due to a warmer summer with humidity and are completely harmless, id rather spiders than flies.
however there is one spider id advise you all to keep an eye out for, its come from australia and looks like a black widow but with a greyish patch instead of red and apparently these hunt widows, ive found 2 so far and have had more sightings of em. they can cause sickness if they bite you so id say get rid of them, i put the one i found back in the shed cos im a spider fan and it aint goin near me anytime soon.also ive a goliath tarantula so they dont really unnerve me so much.
the spider is called Steatoda Grossa, google it.

killing on average two a night in my gaff,i know they keep flies at bay but so does flyspray and flyspray doesnt freak me out, every year they getting bigger,i find vannila incense and candles seem to keep them at bay, also apple and cinnemon candles which you can get now comin up to crimbo, ive heard cedar oil and chestnuts work too, just ten minutes ago i spotted a hugh bastard on my balcony, mustve been 3 inches wide, was in the process of making a cup of tea so i fecked a kettle of scallding water over it,normally they curl up but this fecker kept running till he got a boot of my size 10 and went to spidey heaven,is it climate change or maybe house spiders mutating with other stowaway spiders that are being brought into ireland.ive seen smaller tarantulas

There do seem to be an exceptional amount of those enormous spiders around. The 'too close for comfort' prize was the one that came over my shoulder and hiked across the front of my jumper! It went into orbit, then I caught it and put it outside.
