By the way, the HUnky Dory ads don't bother most females.

Ok have the Firemans calenders been banned then liek the rugby ad last year ?

Hear, hear! I'm sick of this ****e too. It's almost like we're not allowed to have an opinion on issues that affect women.

It's really all about maintaining the status quo, I fear.

What status quo ? Have you opinion - speak!!!
Now I'm confused. Why do you think e.g. I don't like the (rugby) ad?? The answer is because it threatens the family atmosphere and inclusive ethos that surrounds the game and that makes it so great. I'm used to sex selling products but I would prefer it not be associated with my sport because it doesn't really fit with the ethos. I don't care if they're male models, female models or actual players - it's not that they're pretty that I object to (bring that on!) - it's that the pictures are sleazy

Family atmosphere ??? To me rugby = drunken southsider lads with a sense of entitlement startign fights in town.

    What about these ads:

Its because the girls are stunning. I maintain if you had ordinary looking girls in the add it would be a non issue.
please see posts 237 and 225

You're obviously not involved in rugby then

We're talking about it. It worked. That's what pisses me off. Lazy advertising numpties. A bit of creative thinking wouldn't go amiss in Irish advertising. Oh hang on I put "creative thinking" and "Irish advertising" in the same sentence. The madness.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

To be fair here - you are right must people actually complaining here are male - but they aren't engaging or explaining.

To be honest with you its the hipocrisy of the issue that bugs me. Its because the girls are stunning. I maintain if you had ordinary looking girls in the add it would be a non issue.

Or if they a girls gaa team did a nude calender for example noone would bat an eyelid - they would be congratulated for being brave. Because the girls in the ads are professional models they are seen as free targets for abuse

You honestly don't think there'd be complaints about the nude calendar?

But it's being implied that it's females with the issue. Yes, I'm sure women phone up JOe Duffy to complain but they're the same women who phone up Joe Duffy to complain about everything. It's hardly most women in the country...it only takes one or two complaints for an investigation to be carried out.

Is this thread about the ad campaign or is it about female posters on here being ugly and jealous because as far as I can see, the venom is directed at us.

My point about the pictures and the GAA was the lack of sincerity...greedy, snivelling capitalists cashing in on an amateur sport with something totally unrelated to the game with some good-looking woman using her chest to pass the ball...it's as if they use the same campaign for every sport. This is a family sport....I went last week and there's hundreds of kids there....everything is being sexualised and now they've got their greasy little hands on the GAA. They're being bombarded with images of half-naked women everywhere. That has to have some impact on their little minds.

Would pepple complain about this ? Still using sex to sell

opinion guy, I'm not sure what you're asking me? The most obvious reason why that's offensive is because the Maori see imitation of their art forms as offensive (I think because they see them as having intrinsic mana)
No offence LeeHoffman but this is partly the reason I hate Rugby.
Why? I can't see those pics! (Have to wait til after work)

I really do think that the issue is that it's tough enough for women to be accepted seriously in the sportsworld without being denigrated in an ad such as this. It really puts women in the sphere of 'women are only good to look at, and nothing much else'. It's quite obvious from the picture that these women don't play GAA or rugby (or eat Hunky Dorys for that matter!), so the ad is not celebrating women's sports ability.

It's like having an ad showing a woman in the workplace, but wearing revealing clothing. Her ability to work is not being celebrated, merely her looks.

It's a throwback to a time when women were told to be quiet and demure, let the men organise everything. It took a looottt of work by very dedicated women (and some men no doubt) to ensure that women's voices were heard. Ads like the Hunky Dory ads just make a laugh of that dedication and all the work that has been done. I doubt many people here would be happy if a British company took the piss out of the Easter Rising after all the hard work and dedication put in by the soldiers at the time, I really do.

Oh I agree with you there. Often amazes me how we let the views of a vocal small minority can dictate to the rest of us what we can see.

Its about the ad campaign!?!?! I can't see what any female posters on here look like so it wouldn't make much sense to say that woudl it !?!?!?! I don't get how you think venom is being directed at you (not from me at least). I'm just trying to get people to eplore their assumptions.

See the pictures I postd in my last thread. Half naked men everywhere too. So what. You said you live in Spain - aren't there half naked people everywhere on the beach. Why do kids need protecting from what is normal ? Irish prudishness. This wouldn't be an issue anywhere else in Europe

Didnt say anything about being jelous, im sure you are a lovely looking woman. But im sure you wouldnt mind if there was a few 'hot' men on the board??

Sexy pictures of GAA players advertising the game? No, I wouldn't be into that even though I'm a heterosexual female who fances men. I'm not objecting to good-looking people...I LIKE good-looking people...I moved country to be surrounded by good-looking people...I even like looking at good-looking women because they're nice to look at but not in this context.

My man problem here is with posters saying I've got "issues" or implying I'm jealous just because I'm female. This is the ONLY thing I have an issue with.

I think these 'adverts' for hunky dorys are totally offensive and disrespectful to women and to ladies gaelic players!!!!

it is a cheap and tactless way to promote your product by completely victimizing women for their benefit.

Also what will children think when they see these posters up everywhere and stuck in the middle of a family newspaper, what? that this is what sports women look and act like, total sluts to play a family sport? not a good role models/message for young girls.

My daughter was very upset at these pictures as she is starting training shortly and refuses to go now as she thinks she'll have to dress like stripper!

They should have these sexist adverts removed at once and should never have been made in the first place (obviously by a pig headed male) when they were banned for rugby last year its a complete disgrace!!!!!

Yes and I'm not just talking about myself.

And PK2006...what is the crack with you agreeing with only the male posters on here?? Even conflicting opinions...you only agree with male posters. Ffs.

No I meant the nakedness and use of sexaulity the Maori thing never occured to me. I mean if you have a prolbem with the hunky dorys ad you should have the same problem with this calender. Why don't you ?

Ok well I'll grant you that the sports ads with men genuinely use realy sports players. But what about this:
    http://www.joinwmv.com/2009/01/comments-fans-fengqiang-germany-switch-figure-5p-womens-volleyball-nude-calendars/

Does this offend you as th ehunky dorys ad does ?

What about matildas alicia ferguson - australian female soccer player who did nude shoost presumably for cash ? Is that offensive or bad for womens soccer ? Or is it empowering for her and raising the profile of her sport ?

Eh it is if you interpret it that way. You could equally view it that the models are using their beauty to make good money and empower themselves. I guess it depends on which school of feminist thought you buy into really doesn't it ?

No man...because this isn't the first time. This is every single time a female comments on these kinds of threads. I'm on here to crack jokes and have a laugh but posters always bring the tone down with their issues and snide comments. As you can see, I've been a member longer than you. It'd bug you after a while as well. It's daily.
