If the additional content is free then it's no different to what many are doing now. Game (€50) plus three sets of maps (€45). Those who stop playing pretty quick will use up the free months (assuming here) and that will probably be that...

Will hurt those that like the base game but don't want to shell out the extra for additional maps though, which is poor form.

    🤪

lol how is BF any better? EA are just as bad, they started all this DLC horse ****... And they will do the same with BF3, they just haven't announced it yet..

Anybody remember the BF games after BF2?? The ones where they just reskinned BF2 and sold it as a new game? and EA admitted to it and apologised for ripping off their customers???

No? Just me that remembers this ****?

Oh and for the record, not a cod fanboy, cods just as gay/crap.. :)

I miss competitive FPS communities :(

As long as there are some decent map packs, and people would buy them anyway, $50 a year isn't that bad. How many packs were released for Black Ops this year? 3 or 4 i think? At €15 a pop...you do the math. Makes sense if it's the game you play more then any other game (though playing this more then any other game doesnt make sense to me :P)

And how many of us have paid €12.99 a month for other online games? I've personally spent hundreds (possibly up to €1000...jesus christ :() of euros on World of Warcraft, as well as many other MMO's. Some people play Modern Warfare the same way i played Warcraft (i.e. obsessively). Haters gonna hate. And I've hated the last 2 CoD games btw.

Wow, i'm trying to reason with the people i agree with. I guess even i've see so much hate directed at MW3, and while a lot of it is justified, it's obvious that there is a market for it.

Now lets all get back to focussing on the good things in life...Battlefield 3 :)

TBH the only reason i warranted forking out a sub for MMO's was no cheaters/hackers, hasnt been a FPS to date that didnt have hackers within first few weeks of release.

I've played Black ops probably 205 hours so far this year. I paid 42 euro for it and 45 for DLCs. So that's about 2 euro an hour. I play very little compared to some people but that's a really good deal.

I'm gonna get hardened edition so that's about 100 euro, I'm gonna probably play more than 250 hours of that. which is so cheap and I get so much enjoyment that it is beyond worth it.

Noone is gonna force anyone to buy any of these things, but if you enjoy it then you probably will do so.

The thing is; you don't actually have to subscribe to elite. Its optional. You dont have to pay to play...yet. I still think this is a step in the wrong direction though. You can bet that MW4 will be subscription only. COD will become something like an FPS version of world of warcraft soon enough imho.

Someone needs to make a real COD rival on consoles, I cannot see it happening for a while. CS:GO might be interesting but it won't appeal to the yy no scopers and kids if css is anything to go by. Guess that's a good thing ?!

My guess is that the next FPS to de throne COD on consoles will be on the next gen consoles.

I paid 0.00 for Counter strike source and got 6 years out of it, and now i gotta pay alot more for a game in which will be replaced with another sequel a year later...And it wont even be as good, it just looks prettier.

If these companies made one game and put a sub on it and supported it for years, then i wouldnt have a problem forking over cash, its the fact that now they will be making you pay, what is it? 100 in total? and then replacing it a year later with another sequel? Fook that, its just pointless and a big slap to the face.. IMO

I really don't care about the charge for elite, what irritates me the most is how the series has alienated those who grew up playing COD as it's progressed. Similar graphics to MW2 I can take, even more perks, killstreaks I hate but I'll withhold full judgement, but nothing substantial has been added to it like dedicated servers or mod tools for PC. Not like they're pushing the genre at all, merely rehashing what has gone before. Everything "new" is window dressing essentially and not addressing anything substantial that really pushed the series forward. Treyarch released playlists and updates during the lifespan of black ops but from IW's record in the past it's highly unlikely that their mistakes will be rectified.

I can honestly say that if MW3 has a flaw akin to what happened in MW2 with commando/danger close/one man army/rock glitches or poor updates that I won't pay full whack for a COD game again and could be the death knell for the series to me. MW2 can be fun and enjoyable but often it's tortuous; COD4 is now tarnished with hacked lobbies, hosts ending games and unfair host selection. What a wonderful legacy of stupidity and ineptitude to build on with MW3 and elite.

If there was something substantially better than exclusive content and included map packs then maybe I'd dip my toes but it's just a money making scam for Activision-Blizzard who've had great success with WOW in the past providing a far superior service than what elite entails. Xbox gamers already are paying for a subscription service and to me it's a poorly veiled attempt at money grabbing from a massive potential (and gullible) audience. I wholeheartedly hope it fails.

Same nix from "IOA" ? :P

Competitive FPS games have really started to die down in recent years but i wouldn't really blame CoD, more to the fact that PC gaming in general is just lacking. Need another quake / UT / CS to mix things up again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,939 ✭✭✭nix

Aye, the very same, there can only be one nix :P

The annoying thing though Magill, if they just put the effort in, COD and BF could fill those roles. They just made the decision to milk the community instead and pander their games to cater to the lesser skilled players who have the gaming attention span of a 3 year old.

We can argue that i can **** off and not buy their games, but the problem is they dominate the market, there are no other games for me to play instead... :(

Lets just hope the new CS wont disappoint and follow the same money grubbing path of CoD/BF...

Am I over reacting? Does anybody else feel the same? :)

The whole FPS genre has been in a downward spiral since COD4 and BF:BC IMO. Idiotic 13yo have the spending power and thats whats driving games right now. The younger brother, well moreover his mates, are a perfect example. The instant a new COD comes out they buy it, for €60 or whatever, just so they can have reskinned guns and Kiefer screaming in their ear. Same with DLCs. The following day my brother, even though he agrees with me that the new game adds nothing and is a rip, buys the game because all his mates have switched over. In this fashion they've captured the whole 12-18 market, and with parents wallets behind them they have huge buying power. Activision can reskin a game, sit on their humps for a little while to allow the last one to cool off, then sell it for €60, then a further €30 for the DLCs, and repeat.

I've stopped using my 360, and probably wont really go back to using it more than a little bit on the side. Have COD4 on both platforms, and I prefer a mouse and KB(another debate) so I played it on PC. Zero interest in the new ones, even with steam selling them for 50% off. While FPS as a genre is failing I'll stick with MOBA, RTS and RPG(SKYRIM, cant wait). Also, Deus Ex is reportedly brilliant so thats on the to play list as soon as exams and stuff are done with. This new CS remake could be nice and rejuvinate the game, but it wont be anything special. Valve really need to release a new FPS, look how popular TF2 was and is(I'm bored at this point). If we ever get HL3 and a DM to go with, I will be all over that ****, till then, forget FPS.

PS: We can really blame broadband for the whole thing, with its advent online multiplayer on consoles has taken over, and subsequently the herd mentality.

<3 IOA ! My back is still sore from the time i played with you guys! Just messing :) (Being accused of hacking at lan when i went with kaks + co was fun :D)

The thing with CoD is that its the only FPS that actually plays well on console (Besides Halo... and arguably BF), older shooters like quake/TF2/CS/UT just aren't made for gamepads.

I hope CS:GO turns out well tho.. im sure it'll be good enough to keep me entertained but i can't see the CSS or 1.6 community taking too it at all, we'll have to see tho. If it doesn't take off... we'll just have to wait until HL3 and a new engine (With a new CS + TF no doubt on the cards come then).

The likes of Red Orchestra 2,BF3,DODS,TF2 all on PC will keep me happy enough for my multiplayer fps fix for a very very long time.
Thousands upon thousands of populated servers playing the above superb fps games = fps heaven to me.

Most of those games haven't got a populated competitive community, its all well and good if ya play an hour here and there every few weeks/months. But i and many others like to really get stuck into a game... One game, not half a dozen different games to play with low skilled pub players..

And Magill, i miss the lans :(

Are you sure they dont have a populated competitive scene ?
Last i checked they had,TPG,ESL,GotFrag eSports,Enemy Down are a few that spring to mind.
Personally ive done the competitive thing for years, played in every ladder and league in Europe.
These days i get a lot more enjoyment from playing on regular servers with friends in a community environment having a laugh on TS or Vent.
If i did want to play compeitively again COD would be the last series id turn to as would a console.
Id love to see you pop onto a Red Orchestra pub servers and talk of low skilled players lol,you would get one huge wake up call.
I dont buy into this generalising of "pub" players, its ridiculous to generalise them as low skilled, ffs i know guys who are pub players by choice and have no interest in competitive gaming and are equally as skilled as those who play competitively.

Hes not wrong tho :) Most public/casual players aren't very good, same with every game on every platform really. Someone whos naturally good at shooters will be whooping ass once they get used to the game.

That i cannot disagree with but to automatically brand all pub players as low skilled is just wrong imo.

Aye it is, im guessing he just meant he'd rather not play public in general and assumed there was no competitive scene in those games (I know TF2 has a healthy enough comp scene, not too familar with Red orchestra/DOD tho).

The Dods scene is pretty dead, and has been in decline since cod4 came out.

Is it just me or is the Tf2 scene pretty insular? You don't see much news about bar the occasional cadred article.
