(Reuters) - Former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Sunday called for the creation of a "United States of Europe," saying the bloc needed a common government to avoid future economic crises.

It's unbelievable to think that our greatest ally in our fight for independence against this shower is now Britain!

What exactly has the thread title got to do with the story you linked?

I suppose 'Former German leader expresses political opinion' wasn't controversial enough?

"Great Britain causes the greatest problems. (It is) not in the euro but the British nevertheless always want to participate when it comes to designing a European economic area," he said. "That doesn't work."

Everyone knows that the Brits make for the best baddies.

"Dotin' oul bollix thinks Europe should be ran differently."

Precise value of his opinion: zero.

A high ranking official has stated for the first time that " we will have to give up our national sovereignty". This is a huge statement, never before uttered. It now confirms what the eurosceptics feared all along right from Masstricht. The E.U wants total power over.

That'd all be well and good if the EU actually functioned properly. I can't see his idea being widely supported right now.

You gotta hand it to Germany, they never gave up. 3rd time lucky and all that.

I don't just not mid it, I'm pretty supportive of it. We are incapable of electing a good government for ourselves.

Neither of you two want to live in a USE - words can't begin to describe the total horror.

    Is it worse than Darndale?

It's an inevitable necessity for Eurozone countries, and naturally the super-statists have seized the opportunity provided by the current economic crisis to perform the coup de gra power grab.

    "It's necessary for economic stability"

Sounds a lot like "Yes for jobs!" doesn't it?

Fuk you Germany, I hope that your United States of Europe ends up with a Greek finance minister, a Brit in foreign affairs and a Paddy in charge of Banking!

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt - shame when people refuse to acknowledge inconsistencies that cause great inconvenience to their preferred world view.

    :D

Brilliant. I can't help feeling you haven't thought your objection through. Can you imagine the misery of living in an Ireland run as well as Germany? The horror of efficient health and transport systems? The competent politicians and local government? The sickening financial stability? The reasonably cost of living?

    My BLOOD RUNS COLD.

But why? How will things be different in everyday life?

And Im not a total Ireland hating euro-phile or anything, i don't think the Germans are better at running a country than we are. I just like the idea of a USE

So long as it remains democratic in nature I look forward to a unified europe.

A FORMER high-ranking official......he has as much clout as Bertie Ahern or John Bruton now that he's NO LONGER a high-ranking official.

So we need a thread title correction so that it's at least truthful.

That said, given what our own homegrown politicians managed to do, I'd nearly welcome outside management, as long as they ditched their own agenda and actually worked for the good of everyone.

Well he is the chairman of the board of Nord Stream AG i guess that's pretty high ranking and kind of official.
Not sure how that affords him such amazing clairvoyancy though.
