The goverment needs to stop flogging a dead horse, and just let the language go. Obviously they can still support it being spoken in the Gaeltacht regions but outside of that they should let it be. They waste millions of euro and hundreds of hours teaching a language that is of zero use to people. The students themselves are highly unlikely to ever actually use the language. Surely this valuable time should be spent teaching students French, German or Spanish - languages that will be of ACTUAL USE to them! God only knows how much more money is wasted translating documentation into Irish. It's survival of the fittest, there were other languages before Irish on this island that died out. If Irish isn't strong enough to survive then let it go the way of Cornish. I'm sick of having this useless, god awful language forced upon me by a bunch of bureaucratic clowns living in the past. If i wanted to read something in Irish then i'd go to Dingle!

Good to see all the tired old arguments nicely summed up in one concise post!

Now we can move on and discuss using the language instead of moaning about not using it.

Sure why keep any of our culture?... might as well quit with the gaelic football and hurling while we're at it!!!...

anyone fancy a spot of cricket?

Do you people have any idea how many people fought to keep our culture alive and now we just wanna give it up once we have the freedom to practice it?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭plein de force

    I can't speak it.

if we want it to be more widely spoken we really need to look at how it's taught. As it is at present a lot of people leave school with better french, german etc. than they have irish

Well, I don't mind the Irish language per sae.

What I resent is taxpayers (my) money being used in a futile effort to keep a few people happy in their own hobby.

Now, I'm needing a new distributer cap for my '74 Rover P6.

I think you should buy that for me!

    Why?

Cos it's part of my hobby, that's why!

    Would you resent that?

I WANT YOU TO PAY FOR MY HOBBY NOW!!!!!!!!!!1

Learning irish isnt a hobby!... is bloody hard work! im sure you didnt enjoy learning it in school too much? cuss i sure didnt but i do feel very proud of being almost fluent in irish as its my native language.

And dont worry.... i'd say your money is being spent on muuuuuccchhh more useless things than encouraging Irish people to speak their own language

exaggerate much? People all over the country enjoy gaelic games, both from a spectator and playing point of view. The same definitely cannot be said for the Irish language. It's not about throwing away our culture - the english language has played as much a part in shaping this country as Irish has. It's more to do with doing away with those things we do not need. Since the formation of the Gaelic League in 1893 people have been trying to turn the tide and transform this country back into an Irish speaking one, or at least a bi-lingual one. Despite the best efforts of some folk, ultimately, at 118 years, very little progress has been made. It's time to let the language go outside the Gaeltacht. People in those regions can speak it away to their hearts content. But no more of it being forced upon people by gaeilge nazis in english speaking areas i.e. Ninety five per cent of the country.

Téann triúr buachaillí isteach go dtí club oíche áit éigin sa Mheiriceá Theas:

Buachaill a haon: "Trí Carlsburg, le do thoil."

Freastalaí Beáir: "Gan fadhb!! Cárbh as díobh?"

    Buachaill a dó: "Sasana"

Freastalaí Beáir: "Ahh Saaaaaaaasanaaa! Dean rud éigin Sasanach!"

    Buachaill a haon: "Céard?"

Fear eile ag an mbeár: "... roinnt canadh Sasanach?"

Freastalaí Beáir: "Séa! Nó, céard faoi roinnt damhsa Sasanach, más mian libh?"

Cailín taobh thiar dóibh: "Dean damhsa ... nó canadh."

    Triúr buachaillí: *mumble, mumble, mumble*

Buachaill a haon: "Can I go out to the toilet?"

Buachaill a dó: "Seo dán, i mBéarla, ár dteanga dúchais i Sasana."

Buachaill a haon: "And a fox ... I like sweet cake."

Buachaill a dó: "... sweet cake."

Buachaill a haon: "And Kate Thornton ... I have a jumper on, there are clouds in the sky ... give me the sweet cake!!"

Gach duine sa chub oíche: "Sweet Cake!"

Tráchtaire: "Níol sé ach 'a' nó 'b', tá seans gur 'c' é chomh maith."

Cailín ag damhsa le bhuachaill a haon: "Labhair níos mó Béarla!"

Buachaill a haon: "Quiet, road, girl, milk."

Always find it interesting to see people talk about Irish language and Irish nationalism like they go hand in hand. Revisionism. They were all Catholic too ;).

No no you naughty boy, it's not Dingle anymore, it's An Daingean. Centuries of history attached to a name known worldwide flushed because of utter boggers* like O'Cuiv, who ignored the, you know actual locals. The Official Languages Act allows said cultural nazis to bypass local government laws and the democratic process. The Dingle council held a vote which had a 90% turnout and the result was over a thousand people wanted him to go and shíte and only six, yep six agreed to the name change. Still O'cuiv ignored the democratic wishes of the locals and went one better and threatened the largest town in the Gaeltacht with removal of it's Gaeltacht status. It's utter twattery like this that riles people up.

*not a geographical description, but a mindset. O'Cuiv was born and raised a Dub. Bertie Ahern another Dub is a bogger. Endy Kenny is from the country, he's not a bogger.

    Neither do I!

I was so saddened to hear while speaking to a colleague who originally comes from South Africa mentions by his own children's lack of passion/interest in learning Irish. He felt culture/society drives the negative attitude his children display towards Irish it frustrated him that his children would mimic other children saying ''its to hard'' etc and also felt the teaching or lack of in there primary education didn't help. He as a parent has taken lessons so that he could encourage his children to speak and learn Irish and pointed out that the negative attitude from talking to other parents was also shocking - SAD and embarrassing

I assume his kids are fluent in Zulu and Xhosa?

I was sure I heard recently that it was changed back to Dingle but I can't find a news story about it anywhere. Must've dreamt it.

Gormley of the Greens tried to fix the mess alright, but AFAIK it's still up in the air. The whole thing was daft though. Perfect example of the cultural nazis in operation.
